MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

@joneblaze granted I saw the nice guys before reading your review but I agree w/ your score so I'll check out a few flicks I was interested in (but bypassed) on the strength of your reviews...thought the nice guys was a great movie deserving of a higher score than it averaged on IMDb

I watched the unrated version of Straight out of Compton on HBO onDemand...

More nudity - more humor - more character development for Easy and Dre - more fleshed out relationships for Easy and Heller - and Easy and Dre - a bit more on how much of a devil the exec at Priority Records was... longer concert performances...

IMO - its a much better movie - which is amazing since I love the theatrical cut

ya I def wanna rewatch this now too

Marauders

Geez what a gradual dissapointment this movie is. It starts with thunderous music and an intense bank robbery and robbers using some cool
tech and wearing some of the greatest masks ever. Bruce Willis's character is introduced and Christopher Meloni enters as an FBI agent and im thinking this is
going to be a good heist movie with some great twists
Oh did they have me fooled by that first 30 minutes !!!!!!!!!
I began to realize it is and was just a repetitive mess that makes no sense .Im still not sure why certain characters did certain things in the film
Wait for cable and see if you zone out after the first 30 minutes like i did

Scale of 1-10 a 3

ehh...it was better than a 3...I'd double the score...problem w/ these bank job/heist flicks is if you've seen one then you've pretty much seen them all...this one tried to create a twist but it was far too predictable

I've never seen so much 10s given to movies on a scale of 1-10 in my life. Definitely appreciate what you do OP and the consistent reviewers in this thread. But, man ya'll gotta stop giving movies 10/10. After awhile that dilutes the rating system. Because I know damn well in the history of cinema there have only been a very small amount of movies to be considered "perfect" 10/10.

imo this bullshit line of thinking is one reason why many great movies go unnoticed or are ranked far lower than they deserve...rank it how you see fit if you feel so compelled to disagree w/ it and then let others decide on their own instead of expecting him to suppress his opinion to better suit yours lol

Sounds good, Vicious. Definitely want to check out the unrated version with additional footage now. Thanks for the intel.

its been done before but still an enjoyable watch
6.5/10
you really did see the best parts in the trailer though

Hell or High Water

I love and admire movies like this. This is a movie in which everything works. The script, the acting,The Direction
cinemaphotography and the pacing.
I should have known the brilliant writer Taylor Sheridan wrote this.
This film brilliantly displays what happens when desperation takes hold of a person and they have been financially
backed into a corner.
This is not only a great crime drama, but a reflection of whats currently happening with banks and land/home ownership.
Every scene in this movie works from the simplest conversations and flirtations,to an edge of your seat action sequence.
Every actor nails their roles, high praise to:Jeff Bridges ,Chris Pine,Ben Foster,Katy Mixon,Gil Birmingham,Christopher W. Garcia, Dale Dickey,Kevin Rankin and Melanie Papalia.
There are so many nice touches in this movie, one in particular in which a character experiences elation for accomplishing something but is also struck with sadness at what occured moments before.
I would gladly pay to see this film again.
Please go out and support this film because i think it's one of the best of 2016

War Dogs

I have always found the factual stories about weapon selling to The Pentagon and war torn countries fascinating.
War Dogs hit me with a lot of facts in this dramedy that works for the most part
There are good doses of humor and a good brief turn from Bradley Cooper
Miles Teller portrays David Packouz as the WTF? guy in every situation and Jonah Hill as Efraim Diveroli is the swarmy,do anything for cash guy, even if it means betrayal.
Even though in in every article i have read about the real David and Efraim they were pretty much on the same page about everything.
There are some pacing problems and sometimes the story jams up a bit but this is an enjoyable romp.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

BEN HUR

Some movies just shouldn't be remade or updated
The lead actors did a fine job
The action sequences were great
There were some really strong and moving scenes
Especially those involving Jesus Christ
But they altered and diluted to much of the original story
The pacing was off at times
And I laughed about 4 times during the closing scenes

Scale of 1-10 a 5½

The Trust

In this cops turned thieves movie ,well actually it's never really clearly stated if the characters actually have
commited crimes before but i digress the two leads Nicolas Cage as Lieutenant Jim Stone
Elijah Wood as Sergeant David Waters have great chemistry and they are very amusing together. The film had a great quirky flow to it ,but as the film progresses it becomes quite dark and unfortunately becomes basic and i i started to lose interest so much so i paused the film to see how much time was left.

Thanks for the updates, JBlaze.

Plenty of advance screening passes for the first 3 of late ... pops wants to see Hell or High Water ... some newer contests of late for the dvd / blu-ray for The Trust ... good to see Miles Teller career choices in recent years. One of the better younger actors in the biz. He stays cashing check$.

FUCK......this shit never ceases to amaze me....I wonder how many people have really watched this? And understood it?

F.U.C.K.
watched it 7 times in the past month with a new person everytime breaking it down...

if you liked this you'll appreciate war dogs

Don't Breathe

Even though a lot of people are labeling Don't Breathe as a horror film,i feel it's more of a thriller and it's a very good one.
3 burglars decide to rob a blind man once they find out he has collected a six figure settlement, the cash will help them
escape their dismal lives in Detroit. But of course it's not as easy as it seems.
Even though i felt the movie show's some of it's cards far to early ,it definitely still had some twisty spades in it's hands.
The film relentlessly fun to watch, and the suspense is off the charts at times.
All 4 leads do well Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang as Norman Nordstrom / "The Blind Man
Lang is definitely the standout always such an intimidating presence

Pete's Dragon

A remake of the 1977 musical film of the same name which actually is an improvement of the aforementioned.
The film hits all the right emotional notes and it's a lot of fun.The film's only flaw IMO is that some characters are very underdeveloped.
Other than that if you liked films like E.T and Harry and the Hendersons this one's for you.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Mechanic: Resurrection

The only good things about this flick that should have went straight to DVD are that Jason Statham tries his best with the weak script,
The action sequences are good, some good kills and one liners
Other than that the film offers some of the worst green screen ever,an extremely forced romance,i didnt know what Michelle Yeoh was doing
or talking about ,and Tommy Lee Jones shows up for 10 minutes dressed up like he's auditioning for The Yellow Submarine 2.
Too many plot holes and convenient moments what a mess

Scale of 1-10 a 3

Had a chance to check out Jason Bourne yesterday. It was ok ... wish there were a bit more plot & dialogue, as some of the action sequences seemed to drag out too long thereby extending the suspension of disbelief, or whatever that expression/saying is. Had hoped Julia Stiles would have busted the pussy wide open. She didn't. Kept the clothes on and the pussy remained unbustified. People in the theater were feeling Tommy Lee Jones & his ever-the-comic-book-villain grill.

The Light Between Oceans

The Light Between Oceans is definitely a film that aims for the heart. It's a love story that makes one wonder how far would he or she go to make their spouse happy and rescue them from their despair and depression
Well acted by all involved,Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander have great chemistry. The film is beautifully shot and the child actors in the film are beyond cute.
The story definitely has its strengths and the raw emotion can definitely be felt in a couple of heart stirring moments.
Some scenes are very cliched though, and linger far to long so much so i started to feel the films 2 hour and 15 minute run time.

Scale of 1-10 an 8

WHITE GIRL

This Indie is about a young college bound womans slow decent as she seemingly wants to experience every vice in life. From every type of drug to establishing a romantic relationship with the neighborhood drug dealer.
At times it's a mesmerizing and sad odyssey as Leah (Morgan Saylor) is at times taking advantage of and abused. Then losing all control in public displays of raunchiness and reckless abandon. The film attempts to show her privilege as those around her go down but she still survives another day.
It's raw and intense but i wondered why she was so loose? Did she go up in a strict household and suddenly was free to be her true self?
I wanted to know but didnt get the answers.Still definitely worth a look.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

MORGAN

MORGAN was produced by Ridley Scott, directed by his son Luke Scott and it's a story that involves developing genetically engineered life.So it's no wonder
that the story reminded me of Blade Runner. But Morgan is definitely not on the same level of the aforementioned
It's well acted with a great cast and characters with some odd quirks. There are some terrific fight scenes, and i liked the distant feel of the film
Inconsistancies start to pop up here and there, the pacing was a bit off and in the first 2 to 4 minutes i was able to figure out the big plot twist.

Black A. Camus's directorial debut..? j/p

SULLY

The world saw the gloss and high praise of the heroism and skills of pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger after succesfully landing US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009 saving 155 lives.
What we didnt see was how "Sully" was judged and under the magnifying glass of National Transportation Safety Board. It's one of the best things about Clint Eastwood's SULLY
With every forced landing and crash the NTSB has to investigate.Even though he accomplished the aforementioned it didnt stop him from being under their investigation. This plays out with great intensity and incredible work from Tom Hanks in the title role ,there is no doubt that Hanks is the Jimmy Stewart of our day.
He is greatly assisted by Aaron Eckhart as Sully's co pilot Jeff Skiles.
There are some riveting moments of the the forced landing and Sully's PTS visions of what could have been if he had decided to not land on the Hudson.
There is some padding here and there and there is a moment thrown in for some dramatic effect that i found obnoxious but for a well known story to still play suspensefully thats the sign of a great director and writers.

When the Bough Breaks

Dull thriller with only one interesting thing in it.The lengths the characters go to hold on to their surrogate child.
The flick is about as lame as 2009's Obsessed and borrows from every thriller that has hit theatres in the past 20 years.
Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall deserve better than this drivel that should have went straight to Lifetime

Checked out Snowden on Sunday and enjoyed it. Well-acted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as he's in nearly every scene, and a legit supporting cast in Tom Wilkinson, the always-fuckable Shailene Woodley who needs to be bustin' that pussy wide open for WGOL and BGOL, Melissa Leo, Nicolas Cage, Scott Eastwood, and more. The crowd seemed to be into it and stayed for the end credits. Held peoples' interest throughout.

SNOWDEN

Edward Snowden hero or traitor?
Well by the end of the film Snowden it definitely chooses one of the two.
Snowden was a Central Intelligence Agency employee and contractor for the United States government, very eager to serve his country.
That is until he viewed what he determined was extreme invasions of privacy ,internet freedom and basic liberties,so he leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013 to certain press agencies.

Snowden is interesting when it displays just how far reaching and the access the CIA had to personal information from a Facebook page to a messageboard.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden does a fine job except for some odd thing he does with his voice
Shailene Woodley as Lindsay Mills Snowden's girlfriend is extremely likeable, her scenes with
Levitt really work.
There are pacing problems and i thought the film would have been more exciting and as it reaches it's end i felt they just threw facts at the audience in a jumbled way.

It's an interesting and watchable film but it's also blatantly one sided.
Wait for the DVD
Scale of 1-10 a 7

True, it was definitely pro-Snowden. Fam' wasn't too familiar with Levitt, so had to explain to them his variety of roles over the years, and big start as a teen on tv's 3rd Rock from the Sun in the late-90s or early-00s. Good to see him making that movie money now (Inception, Dark Knight Rises, etc).

The Magnificent 7

A remake of a remake that's actually very good.
This western hits all the right notes of the genre .I liked the entire cast and the characters they portrayed which included: Denzel Washington as Sam Chisolm, a bounty hunter, the leader of the Seven,Chris Pratt as Josh Faraday, a gambler with a fondness for explosives,Ethan Hawke as Goodnight Robicheaux, a sharpshooter,Vincent D'Onofrio as Jack Horne, a tracker, Byung-hun Lee as Billy Rocks, an assassin,Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Vasquez, a Mexican outlaw,Martin Sensmeier as Red Harvest, a Comanche warrior and last but not least Haley Bennett as Emma Cullen, a young woman who hires the Seven. The standouts are Washington,Hawke and D'Onofrio
The fact that some of the characters were haunted by their pasts definitely increased the dramatic parts of the film.
The action sequences were tightly directed and relentlessly great and exciting.

Peter Sarsgaard as Bartholomew Bogue, a corrupt industrialist had just the right amount of sinister that i could dislike the character and hope he would get what he deserved in the end.,but basically the character bookends the film
Cliched and predictable here and there and i did feel the length of the film at times.
Bu this is a fun and rousing western for the most part

DAYLIGHT'S END
Daylights_End_poster_usa.jpg

Years after a mysterious plague has devastated the planet and turned most of humanity into blood-hungry creatures, a rogue drifter on a vengeful hunt stumbles across a band of survivors in an abandoned police station and reluctantly agrees to try to help them defend themselves and escape to the sanctuary they so desperately need.

So what do you get when you mash up the Mad Max films,I Am Legend and 28 Days/Weeks Later..? This is the result

For a small budget production, this IMO was surprisingly good..loved the tactics that some of the characters were using

7/10

The Birth of a Nation

Nate Parkers The Birth of a Nation is a stunning.mesmerizing ,moving and at times painful film.
The story of Nat Turner has always stuck with me through various books and artists depictions of a man who could no longer
turn his back on or subject himself to the degradation and brutality of slavery.
This is displayed so well in the film in an incredible portrayal by Nate Parker as Nat Turner. So much raw emotion leaps off of him
especially in a scene in which he witnesses extreme brutality and moments later has to preach to slaves to placate them

I enjoyed the performances by Aunjanue L. Ellis as Nat's mother as Nancy Turner and Esther Scott as Bridget Turner Nat's
grandmother. The love and concern they have for Nat shines through in their strong performances
High praise also to Colman Domingo as Hark Turner and Aja Naomi King as Nat's wife Cherry.
Other performances that hit the right notes are given by Armie Hammer and Penelope Ann Miller who portray semi sympathetic
and shaken slave and plantation owners.

The brutality in the film is unnerving and disturbing, definitely not for the faint of heart
I think the film definitely reflects the injustices of today How much and how long can one turn a deaf ear to injustice, abuse of power and degradation?

I know some people will stay away from the film because of the 1999 rape allegations against Parker of which he was acquitted in 2001,
but this film is bigger than just him
Some will say Im tired of watching films about slavery, slavery ended over 150 years ago get over it !
To all the aforementioned i say this Has anyone ever said get over 9-11 or the Holocaust?

The horrors and degradation of slavery has been brought forth in several films and TV shows yes some have grown weary of it but i believe it is important to remember it.
I love to read and i still read a couple of newspapers and i like to be well informed by print magazines, and yes schools have become more
progressive in African American studies in literature that is provided to students and also homework assignments in fact my son and his
fellow students were encouraged to see The Birth of a Nation, but i think seeing a film is still one of the most effective and moving experiences
a person can have.I think a movie can stir the soul and imprint a lasting vision in the minds eye that cant be forgotten or wither
away or age like a periodical or book.
I believe The Birth of A Nation has those soul stirring and lasting impressions and it's one of the best films of 2016

The Accountant

In The Accountant Ben Affleck is Christian an autistic mathematics savant with more affinity for numbers than people. He uses a small CPA firm as a cover for his real job as a forensic accountant for dangerous criminal organizations but hot on his trail are treasury agents Raymond "Ray" King (J. K. Simmons) and Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson)

I liked the pacing and structure of this film,as it shows the viewer how the pieces all fit together
I takes it's time to develop the characters and explains their motivations.
At it's core is a story about family and a father who loves his family and is so protective of them he is determined that they develop a thick skin so no one could ever take advantage of them.
Affleck and the entire cast including Jon Bernthal ,Jean Smart ,Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow do a fine job and there is a cute relationship that develops between Affleck and Anna Kendrick as Dana Cummings

There are a lot of twists in the film there was one i saw coming that kind of hoped wouldnt happen, and there was one that completely surprised me.

This is a film that you have to pay close attention to as it combines an interesting story with some great action sequences.

Kevin Hart: What Now?

I find Kevin Hart to be funny for the most part.I actually refer when the characters he portrays are more laid back than manic and beyond silly.
Kevin Hart: What Now? worked for me because it focuses on his stand up routine
With the exception of some one liners from Halle Berry the James Bond spoof portion of the film didnt appeal to me and goes on entirely to long, and that may be due to seeing some of it in the trailers that were released months ago
The stand up act was great though watching Hart connect stories about his family, fiance ( now wife) life, and love was quite hilarious

Scale of 1-10 an 8

The Girl on the Train

I had forgotten the effects an extremely drawn out movie and a warm theatre had on me until watching The Girl on the Train
About 45 minutes in i started to doze off .Now the film was interesting at first as each character is introduced and we discover their mindsets.
Except for some flashes of salty dialogue i started to lose interest
Emily Blunt gives a great performance but its definitely not enough to save this film that follows an alcoholic divorcée who becomes involved in a missing persons investigation.
The dullness of the film and the actions of some of the characters took me out of the film, actually some of it was laughable.
One character finds out devestating news but does absolutely nothing about it..Plus to top it off the character does nothing to help another character who is in danger.
One moment did shock me though and it made me laugh and wince at the same time.
Maybe the book is better who knows?
Skip this over hyped flick
