The Americans: The 2nd best espionage/spy show on TV

Interesting thoughts Fonz
Imo i think Paige's feelings are more on the genuine side and dont think Phil was upset cause she is like her mom.

I think this is the worst possible time for Paige to get even more involved in their life. They getting squeezed from all directions and their daughter is metaphorically sleeping with the enemy.

With that said Paige does see the value of a relationship with Matt. It helps her keep tabs on Stan. But she was feeling Matt from the series premiere as the new boy across the street and they have alot in common as kids of spies (although Matt doesnt know that).

If i had to put a percentage on it i would say 75% are legit feelings (she is a teenager) and 25% taking one for the team.

And yeah Matthew fucking kills it in the acting departure . Loved all the emotion he had to demonstrate in the scenes with stan and pure rage with paige although she did nothing wrong (he said himself he was ok with them being friends if it were for the right reasons in the previous episode only to pull a 180)

Man she is trying... She just doesn't have a clue, because they still leave her in the dark on shit. Plus she is a Teenager...

But we need to talk about Phillip's son. That shit is going to be a problem.

the damn writing on this show!!!

EVERYTHING pays off...

The little brother who is becoming a MAN

NOTICE the height hair posture voice change and attitude and how is ALWAYS lurking in the background?

Growing into a man right before our eyes

how is HE gonna feel about Paige messing around with his new drinking buddy, Matthew?

Stan trusts Henry MORE than his OWN son.

Remember this was Henry little secret man cave... his favorite Uncle Stan the ONLY outside family he had and Stan has a STRONG influence on him.

And Stan tells Henry...EVERYTHING.

Hell Stan's WIFE trusts Philip more than her ex-husband

This WHOLE thing is about LOYALTY.

I wonder if Elizabeth will begin to teach her daughter not to protect HERSELF but to use love trust and sex as a weapon?

And then we have Philip's son...

who ALREADY seems like a seasoned agent and is already LOYAL to his dream father...

Elizabeth gonna welcome him just off the Russian allegiance but imagine them both creating a double family?

Or call him an exchange student?

Or f*ck up the whole game and say that it IS Philip's son from an affair when he was on a trip in Russia in college?

Or they link Mischa with Martha in Russia?!?!?!?

Loved how the chemist snitched on his near death bed to the AUDIENCE...

and shook the soul and spirit of the agents because they ALL feel the same.

and the chemist aint dead yet.

The only reason Philip and Elizabeth had kids was part of their cover. They lied to Paige her entire life. Why would't she start second-guessing them after discovering they're Russian spies? They're STILL feeding her lies and half-truths. It would be unrealistic to have her just get with the program. She's not stupid. In some ways, she has the defining traits of her parents: stubborn like Elizabeth and always questioning like Philip.
Paige is her mother. Phil would like her to be sentimental, but Paige is about her business.

They really pulled a 180 with that character. Went from caricature rusian to arguably the only good guy on the show. He did the right thing giving stan that info.

I keep telling people Stan is NOT a good guy.

We forget he was JUST like Elizabeth and Philip...

he was undercover for YEARS with that biker gang doing all types of foul sh*t and he aint NEVER been the same.

So we have ALWAYS been seeing the RESULT of the spy life.

And he CHEATED on his wife.

And it wasn't the same as the other characters cheating either.

Stan just straight cheated on his wife and TRIED to justify it a million ways and couldn't.

Elizabeth and Philip were PUT together and fell in love later.

I'm not saying that Paige doesn't have feelings for Matthew, but go back and look at their interactions before the time jump and look at them now after Paige was brought in on how to get information from Pastor Tim and his wife. Look how she regularly gives details to Elizabeth on what is going on with Pastor Tim and even brought up a different suggestion on how the rest of the family should congratulate Tim on the new baby. Then look at last weeks episode "A Roy Rogers in Franconia". The plot synopsis for that episode tells you all that you need to know.... "As Paige deals with last episode's trauma, she sees her mother in a new light... and finds she has inherited some of her parents' skills."

Then look at the episode... Paige just sees her Mom kill someone to save her. Her parent's tell her that sometimes they do dangerous things in order to protect themselves. In that episode, she is sitting on the couch with her mom and for the first time in forever Paige gives Elizabeth a genuine smile. Then Paige sees Henry come in with Matthew and she notices how close they are. Henry goes to the garage to grab some antenna and that's when Paige takes her opportunity to start asking Matthew questions about Stan's relationship with Henry. Matthew then goes into elaborate detail about Stan's job and him going undercover. When Matthew finishes Paige doesn't look at him... She immediately looks back at Elizabeth for second to see if she was listening and she was.

Next time you see Paige.. She lets Matthew drop her home, but she lets him take her back to his house. She then gets Matthew to open up about Stan not being home for two days. After that she kisses him, but then she immediately leaves. She runs back home and the very first thing she does is report everything that Matthew told her back to her parents. When she finishes... She asks them "Is that important?" Then you need to go back and re-watch her speech to them... She puts everything out there. She doesn't see the difference between getting close to Pastor Tim and getting close with Matthew.... because in her mind her parents keep telling her that they are going to get through this, but they never tell her HOW THEY ARE GETTING THROUGH THIS.

I'm telling you... this is 90% field work and 10% feelings. Paige is all in for now.

Quick thought.... I'm now on board with Henry being the downfall for them. Something tells me that Philip's son is going to pop up. Philip and Elizabeth will be forced to tell everything to Henry. Henry gets jealous over watching Philip's growing relationship with his new son (probably because Philip's russian son can give him that connection to a home that he hasn't had in over 20 years). Henry will probably go hang with Matthew and Stan and inadvertently let the other son slip. I don't see Henry doing something intentionally, but I do see him mentioning this other kid which would allow Stan to ask Phillip about it... and the Centre won't have the ability to create a plausible cover story because they didn't account for this kid being able to enter America.

Wow...

I'm hearing people HATED this finale?

WTF?!?!?

Shit.. who are these people that Hated this finale. That shit was a 10.

Oh and Dylan Baker (the guy that plays the chemist William Crandall) needs a best Supporting Male Actor Emmy for his work this Season.
He turned a one note character into a multi-layered person. I loved how he pointed out that his flaw was that he didn't have a partner. Someone who could allow him to form connections.
While at the same time he realized that it was because he formed connections that led to him being captured. It was a great scene. In an episode full of great scenes.

I disagree if Paige was really about her business she wouldst have put the family in the mess their in now.

She doesn't know how to do stuff. She's trying with what little info they give her. They never fill in the full blanks. At first she was just being an ass now she likes the idea. She keeps asking because she wants to do it too. They always come at her with the either we can trust you or we can't shit so she's like im in it now let me go ahead and do what i think a spy should do.
Elizabeth a few episodes back talking about how paige is giving reports unprompted and shit.
I think she likes the boy but more than liking him she sees it as an opportunity to get in there and work him to make her parents proud of her. Her goals changed. Shit even this last episode she was working out when she should visit pastor tim and them to keep up appearances etc etc.
Philip and Liz had years of cultivating and training before they were put in the field and still had plenty of fuck ups
Paige is getting into the game blind as fuck.

I don't think Henry will be the downfall unintentionally or intentionally for them. If his son finds him they can play it so many ways especially if he can't speak english because none of those kids speak russian. stan included.

it'll really be a big problem if Paige gets seeded up by him..

I don't think she'll go THAT far. it's just an act I don't think she's going to actually have sex with him. Just keep him on her little finger and get all the info out of him she can.
Philip doesn't want her to be a spy. He sees her becoming one. He hated the idea and as soon as it was brought up that they wanted the kids he's had 1 foot out of the door ever since. Now here she is exhibiting spy behavior and there's really nothing he can do to stop her from doing it other than try and yell at her about it. but he can't get too bent out of shape cause she has to do spy work with the pastor. he's stuck. that running shit is just going to eventually look way too enticing.

Plus i don't really see them getting that much work next season due to the fact that they just simply don't know if the chemist snitched or not. the spy game is a paranoia game. they had actually gotten to the point where they knew stan ain't know shit so they never even watched him. didn't really care about when he came and went. if he popped over or not. relaxed. comfortable talked about shit and never had to second guess it

it already began when phil went over to get paige. he had no idea what he was going to say to him. the uneasy look on phil's face is how he's permanently going to be with stan from now on and its going to cause a major strain on the relationship because phil is going to be acting funny and stan being an agent is going to get curious as to why phil is acting funny.

last time phil acted funny he almost caught them remember?

people act like stan wouldn't be somewhere with nina right now if he could be...

cuz...

on the real it reached the point I would of been hiding a recorder in my my mama church hat for a piece of her Stroganoff

giphy.gif

And trust if Stan EVER found out that Nina really didn't LOVE him?

even NOW?

Whoa.

Cause he LOVED...yeah he used her and played her but he LOVED her.

You know I hear you...

I always held it against her that she went with off with the hitchhiker in the first season...

but perhaps they are showing THAT naive Paige is dead and gone.

But that also shows Henry was NEVER as soft and naive as everyone ELSE thinks.

Phil did for Martha what Stan couldn't do for Nina

its a parallel game going on that Phil has demolished Stan in.
Home life
Kids
Wife
Work.
Phil has outclassed him in every facet.

It's gone as of now. It took forever. She was stupid, lashed out and all of that stuff. She did snitch she did put everyone in danger etc etc etc
But now she's turned the corner.

Henry is just chilling. I guess I get it, there's only so much time you can give people but we don't know shit about that boy. Nothing.
He lives there and comes home from going somewhere everyday. we've never seen him in a class.
he could be the biggest drug dealer in virginia for all we know

I disagree we actually know a lot...

(when I got time I need to write a profile of that kid)

but its almost like WE have to spies to catch it

and I got a feeling it will be a BIG payoff.

Nah we don't KNOW because they don't show. If there's anything we learned from this show is that unless you actually see it, then you can't say for certain what is what.
You can tell he's a sharp kid but that's about it.

I don't think Henry will be the downfall unintentionally or intentionally for them. If his son finds him they can play it so many ways especially if he can't speak english because none of those kids speak russian. stan included.

Yeah but Stan is smart... You bring a random Russian Kid into the mix and Stan will start putting shit together. His focus has changed after the Gad thing. Dude isn't even coming home most nights. Kids English will have to be flawless and they can't use the let's give him a random name from some dead person trick. The FBI caught wind of that one when they exposed Phillips cover with Martha. As soon as Stan sees this kid, you might as well start the clock for the end game.

Possibly but we're also assuming that he'll just move into the house to live with them too lol. They're way too smart to just let him move in and integrate him regardless of who he is. Stan might not ever see him. It might be the son who sees him being over there with paige and mention it to stan in passing.

But I feel like Stan is more prone to EMOTIONAL mistakes...

when he goes across the street to beat up Philip about his ex wife?

That to me showed you his MAJOR weakness.

that sh*t would NEVER happen to our favorite couple.

he still feels guilty for the death of his FIRST partner, he feels guilty about being away from his family so long, he feels guilty about cheating, he feels guilty about his divorce, we KNOW he feels guilty about Nina, he feels guilty about Gad, he feels guilt about Martha even.

It just seems no matter how emotionally shattered Philip and Elizabeth are...they power through.

Yeah Stan been fooled but we all KNOW he is a master spy...

But his EMOTIONS get the best of him...

remember that police sketch of Elizabeth and Philip with glasses and a wig?

now you telling me the same dude that could tell Martha was a double agent off a LOOK, and on a RADIO in a car a quarter mile away could tell the tail on the chemist was too far back...can't even see a FUNNY COINCIDENTAL RESEMBLANCE?

I think in the end that will be a BIG moment when Stan may damn well kill himself with angry and shock

(and not in a Hank Breaking Bad way either)

or much more likely

he may just be a piece the KGB uses to keep Philip in check...

and I do not think Philip OR Elizabeth is going to like that at all.

remember according to the grandfather he has FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES

and the son also seems to be ANTI -GOVERNMENT...

that could prove to be a BIG problem (re: Nina)

It all depends on how they play it though.
Also depends on when they decide for him to find Philip. you never know, he might not find him until the series finale.
