I should've clarified my question earlier that I wouldn't be looking at corded lawnmowers if it was electric. I'd only do battery powered units if I opted not to go with gas. I'm new to homeownership so I wanna make sure I get my money's worth and do things right. Either way I still gotta get the yard graded otherwise I'm gonna be dealing with mud & mosquitoes all spring and summer.
If mosquitoes is a real worry.... fret not. I'm not sure where you are, buy you should be able to find a lawn care company licensed in Category 41 - Mosquito abatement.

Should be no more than 2 applications for the whole growing season.

I'm studying to get licensed now.

Anybody mulch they grass ? Whats the science on that I dont wana be bagging dead grass i hear if you mulch it helps feed the lawn! ?!?
Mulching is great. But you can't let it get high and still wanna mulch, it will take more power to cut thru.

The Honda HRX has a quad blade that mulches the clippings fine and redistributes them on the top layer of the soil. As the clipping decompose... they enrich the soil.

But like I said, this should be done routinely so as not to have too much clippings, clumps, or bog down the mower

Got .5 acres myself yes sir the ride on joint is the only way to go !!

^^^^This^^^^

I got .24 acres and al be cot damned if I walk that bitch behind a lawn mower. I ride on one of this...

I when to Lowe's 2 Fall's ago, after the mowing season was over and when they were try to get rid of all there riding mowers. I pulled a manager a side and asked him how motivated he was to get rid of the lawn tractors pictured above and offered him $1000 for a $2100 riding mower. He was a little reluctant but I firm on what I wanted to spend and I got what I wanted.. I couldn't pay for it fast enough. I saved $1100. One of the best investments I ever made. It's already paid for itself. I can cut my front and backyard in 30 minutes. When I was pushing it, it took more than 4 hours.

How often do you say u got to mulch.... once a week?

Depends.

Mulching is good because it keep the soil healthy and full of nutrients.

It can be bad if your yard has a lot of thatch which is a build up of old grass. If your yard is full of thatch it can crowd out your roots making it a thin turf. When was the last time you removed thatch from your yard?

Depends on the time of year, part of the country (location), etc.

Ideally, you don't want to cut any more than 1/3rd of the blade length in one cutting.

Just watch it, if you like how it looks @ 2", don't let it get higher than 3" before cutting

Now this is what I'm talking about right here... My coworker got his 2 yrs ago... $$$$$$..He turns down 3 or 4 contracts a week because he doesn't have the time..get that paper my ninja..

This is my backyard for the most part and as you can see it's a decent size but with some hills. I'm right now in the process of looking at different companies to grade my yard to level it so I don't have to worry about the excessive water saturation caused by heavy rains and the water running down from the nearby homes that are higher up on the hill than I am. If I don't address it soon, I'm gonna be dealing with a severe breeding ground for mosquitoes.

I had a problem with mosquitoes my first year here. The following year I bought praying mantis eggs from Planet Natural (make sure that when you place your order you ask for the entire stick the egg case is on. This allows you to tie, staple, or ground the stick in or around the yard.) Each egg has 50-200 babies. Don't worry about them, as you hardly, if ever see them since they camouflage so brilliantly. That year I was barely bitten by mosquitoes, and after they hatched I only saw two mantises all summer - yard marines. They don't bite, but don't pick them up because they may pinch you, but for yards and gardens they really work.

http://www.planetnatural.com/product/praying-mantis-egg-cases/

Right now they have a deal free shipping:
3 egg cases for $13.50
5 egg cases for $19.95
10 egg cases for $34.95
25 egg cases for $64.95

Also, my garden was destroyed last year by Japanese beetles because I ordered too late and they were out. Other sites have mantis eggs at a drastically higher price (5-10x higher) so they will help your yard be bug free.

Thatch .... lol IDK what that is.... i got this tool that attaches to my ride on its supposed scrape dead grass ... is that for thatch... idk i bought mine from sombody they gave me that attachmnt

There are parts of the northeast that are white trash junkieville. Mayfair and Tacony are great example of that. I had to knock on some doors for work, and I could smell the mice and roaches at the front door.

Man that bitch Acur don't know shit about Philly

Yeah that is probably what that tool is. Before your first cut use that tool to remove the dead grass.

As far as mulching, you can mulch everytime you cut. Most mulch evert me they cut.

Iiiiight cool good looking out... so most likely i have to get the modified mulch blades /kit..... and Im thinking mulching once a week during the early spring summer is prob enough my grass tends to grow quick esp during the early months...

I would probably still need to be concerned about the mantis cuz I have a puppy that likes to get into everything

Mantises blend in so well that you won't have a problem with your puppy, even though he likes to get into everything. He wouldn't notice it any more than he would notice a spider on a web, or a beetle on a branch that isn't moving

I'm babying my lawn right now. Watering around midnight. Bought 15-20 bags worth of seed, milorganite and food. Bought some fruit trees. When we had our house built they put sod in the front and sides of the house but nothing in the backyard. Getting that backyard right!

Thinking of either getting a few river birches to place in my yard to suck up the excess water in my soil or creating a few trenches & running some storm drains to excavate the water. I need to act fast too cuz I'm running out of time to fertilize & reseed my lawn.

Damn that adds up pretty quickly. $1K per year vs a $200-$300 mower isn't a fair trade-off
Yea it is. Fuck that i aint cuttin no grass. I gladly cut that check! And they do a damn good job. Money well spent
It cost more than tho the spring clean up has its on cost. Fall clean up ,Plus pruning. Fertilizer lime treatment bla bla bla

Raven $4999. comes with built in generator.
This is my project for next year. By then my business should be up and running and I will have a bit more disposable income. This year I spent $7,800 (taxes & labor included) putting new windows on my entire house including a patio door

Next year I am going to get a brand new riding mower and dump this Craftsman I have. It's just a matter of time before it goes out on me

This post put me on to so much heat. That milorganite has my lawn a dark, lush green already. Growing seeds in the back. Covered with hay and now mulch. Overseeded like a muhfucka though. For my lush green in the front, how high should I have the guys cut the lawn. i heard it should be high.

Do you recommend cutting ourselves or having a service do it? A Spanish guy rolled up on us last week while we were planting flowers and bushes and offered his services. $35 per cut. I was paying $200 per month before so I think I'm winning.

We planted a 4 variety apple tree. A peach tree, magnolia, grape vines, blackberry, etc. Having fun with the outdoor work. My wife is planting all kinds of vegetables and herbs.

Costco has a crazy outdoor covered daybed we're looking at. In addition, they have some decent outdoor furniture. Seeing that taxes are going to be right this year, may get the hot tub now also.

Really came back to this thread to thank everyone for their insight. My lawn is gorgeous this year as opposed to being the sketchy black family lawn last year... Everybody else's lawn is still brown from winter and ours is crazy green and lush.

imam try and make this quick for the brothers with lawns:
1) use scotts turf builder for fertilizer and the weed and seed for the lawn to get that nice green out, water amply..like your woman back side....
2) use a gasoline mower if you anything larger than quarter acre....riding lawn mower or zero g if you got more than an acre.
3) for the bro that thinking about spending money for leveling and grading your yard...ease back on spending that money unless you got it.....GET YOU a yard to 2 yards of fine sand....the good stuff, not that pebbled crap. and use it to fill in areas in your yard where you have standing water. you got a nice yard so don't mess it up bc grading can cause more issues that it fixes. spread that fine sand around and in your standing water areas. itll soak up water, allow the grass the to grow through it and will self level with time. plus you may have a little left over for the kids to play in.....also of course it depends on the region of the country you in too.
4) Now is the time in early spring to put out your weed and feed to get those weeds before they start flowering and spreading. catch them early enough...no problems for later in the summer.

I worked for a lawn maintenance company for 4 years and learned a few things....before I left to come to DC, my lawn won yard of the month 2 months straight bc my grass was like carpet. I LOVE A MANICURED LAWN...ON AND OFF THE YARD ;) YA DIG.

I bought Scott's sun shade mix. Probably like 15 bags for the back of a 1/4 acre. I also bought some tall fescue grass. I bought at least 15 milorganite bags. 30 bags of soil. crazy food and fertilizer. I like to obsess over things, at times.

Props on the advice. I decided not to do any leveling/grading right now and will wait til the fall. In the meantime I'm just collecting quotes from companies so I can get ideas of the materials they would use and get them on my own time. I'm gonna wait til the fall so that I can kill all the grass and weeds in my yard and reseed my yard with fescue since my lawn is currently a mix of fescue and bermuda. This way I also get to kill all birds at the same time.
