Homeowners with lawn do you prefer to use electric or gas powered mowers

I actually use a lawn service for weeding and fertilization. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask what you should apply NOW. Timing is the most important aspect of weed control. While your there ask about their refurbished lawn equipment. .. Torro,Torro,Torro...I kind of let it go last year. ..slacked on the watering..

Looks like you may need some overseeding

zoom_G-MAX_20_40V_Cordless_Twin_Force_Mower_2_Batteries_Charger_5.jpg

Here's the joint I use. Battery powered, super quiet and lightweight. Powerful enough to get through the thick spots in the lawn.

To the professionals in here, do y'all recommend bagging your clippings or mulching?
Man I leave that shit on my yard.

What kind of grass do you have in your yard? Mine is mostly fescue so if I don't stay on top of keeping it trimmed, it'll grow like wild fire pretty quickly and it can grow in clumps too

I have fescue in my yard. Grows fast as hell so I mow twice a week usually.

Gas...Toro brand...I use landscaper to deal with fertilizing, weed control, overseeding and aeration....

My grass is a dark green. Here are the general rules to a healthy green yard.

Weeds- only grow when you don't have a thick turf. If you look down at your yard you should not see any thin areas or patches and small areas of empty space.

Grass has a brown green color-
More than likely the brown color is due to lack of Nitrogen in the soil. Most grass are formulated to be drought resistant so lack of water can be the cause but mostly it will be nitrogen.

Fertilizer- make sure you mantain a fertilizing schedule. With you being new I would recommend organic fertilizer over the synthetic. Synthetic if applied wrong will burn the grass (turning it brown) and stain your concrete. Usee this brand of organic fertilizer Milorganite and it will have your yard a deep green in a few weeks plus it will never burn or stain.

To help would need to know what area of the country you live so I can determine the type of grass you may have

Thanks for the tips. I'm in the North East, lower NY to be exact.

If you have fescue their is not much you can do until the fall. Your grass should be green. Has it been green over the winter
yeah it has though some of it is starting to get damaged from over saturation of water due to the hills in my neighborhood

Since purchasing my home in early December, the lawn in my yard has remained mostly idle due to lack of warm temperature to really cause normal growth. I have fescue grass and save for 1 time, hasn't been mowed since I moved in. There are some local companies that will mow my lawn for $40-$50/visit but I'd like to save money overall plus get a lil extra exercise while I'm at it. What types of mowers do y'all have & are there any particular brands I should look at more or avoid?

I have no preference because I have a gardener. He uses a gas mower, blower as well as uses standard shears or whatever you call me when trim miming Serbs, bushes, etc..

So you should have cool season grass. To turn your yard beautiful grab a bag of that Milorgranite. Very inexpensive plus it is organic fertilizr and will not burn or stain. Lay it down the first week of spring. That will get your yard a dark geen

Do you know what grass you have?

water should not harm fescue and the only thing that is troublesome with fescue is fugus. Check to see if you have fungus

The land is oversaturated with water due to the hills leaving a lot of the area muddy and doesn't get to properly dry. That's what I was referring to

I don't remember exactly. Unfortunately, I don't have any of my old receipts from TruGreen that might have told me. If I can find out, I'll let you know.

North east Philly :smh: Gentrification will end and it will be West Philly everywhere.

I always mulch, its free fertilizer because it feeds organisms in the soil when it breaks down. Doesn't mean it's a replacement for regular fertilizing but it does help.

I only bag in the fall when I'm cutting shorter.

This will depend on what type of grass you have and to a certain extent, where you live. As a general rule though, you want to mulch every time you mow. If you have a tall fescue or bluegrass, you don't want to cut too much of the grass off at one time.

See my post below from another thread a couple years ago.. I live in VA (both hot summers and cold winters) and have tall fescue. This wouldnt apply 100% to those who live in FL or TX where the winter isn't as harsh.

I been doing this for a few years now

Some recommend aerating with a machine but, in my experience, it brings weed seeds up. Believe it or not... I used to spray shampoo on my lawn through a hose-sprayer and it worked better (Google it)

3 simple rules to maintaining a lawn

  1. Water deeply but infrequently. 'Deeply' meaning water for long periods of time at once (1 hour per section works for my lawn) and 'infrequently' meaning only when the lawn seems to need it (7-10 days, unless it's extremely hot). Watering for only 10, 15 or 30 mins at a time doesn't get enough water to the grass roots and encourages weeds. Watering should be done in the early morning or late evening.
  2. Mowing - Cut using the highest setting on your mower, especially when it's hot. This encourages a thicker lawn. In the late fall, you can lower the setting on the mower.
  3. Fertilize regularly - I use all organic fertilizer except for a synthetic with high nitrogen in late fall. Grab some Milorganite (about $13 per 36lb bag @ any Lowes or HD). It's organic but unlike Scotts or the others, it will NOT burn your grass if you apply too much. I know lawn fanatics who apply it 3+ times per month. Set your spreader on the highest setting and just spread it until you've covered the whole lawn. My lawn is 7000sq ft. and I use 3-4 bags per application.

Best applied with rain in the upcoming forecast so it can be watered in.

    http://www.milorganite.com/en/Using-Milorganite/Application-Rates.aspx

General mix for killing weeds - covers almost all common lawn weeds. You'll need 2 applications spaced 2 weeks apart.

- 1 oz Speedzone
- 1 oz Ortho Weed B Gon Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis (CCO) killer
- 1 TBSP spreader sticker (allows chemical to adhere to weeds better)
- 1 gallon of water in a 1 gallon sprayer (double each item for a 2 gal sprayer)

This is what the lawn looked like when I bought my house in 2008. I didn't really do anything for almost 2 years because I had no idea where to start. The 2nd pic is from fall 2012.

There are parts of the northeast that are white trash junkieville. Mayfair and Tacony are great example of that. I had to knock on some doors for work, and I could smell the mice and roaches at the front door.

Do You consider Morrisville or Bensalem Wt? When I first came east I lived with family in Princeton but I would visit Philly fam in Morrisville and the mainline area. My cousins live in the Fairmont area now.

Morrisville and Bensalem isn't Phila, it's Bucks county. There's some real white gabbige in Bensalem/Bristol. I mean gar-fucking-bage. There's a nice strip club on Bristol though.

Its the burbs of Philly I know. Who you speak of aren't the ones causing the murders in the semi gentrified sections off Philly. I'm worried about those who cause the muder rate to sky rocket.

They try the gentrification game in the worst areas. It's a slice of goodness surrounded by an entire pie of shit. East Falls is nice, but 33rd and Alegheny is a few blocks away. It's hood as fuck around there...you think they're going to fuck around in their neighborhood or walk five blocks to rob some white bitch jogging.

Their robbing is why officers needed.
I would hope they would use that energy to get their Ged and find a skill like plumbing etc.

gas, when i first became a home owner i was proud to cut my grass and water and landscape, not now, i pay my potna he got his own lawn company, he cuts weeds and tighten up the landscaping for $35 once a week and if i he passes and see it doesnt need to be cut he catches a few days later, he cut that shit have it lookin like a golf course

Any brands I need to stay away from or brands that are sure fire winners from a quality perspective?
High end: eXmark Turf Tracer, 48" would be ideal for you. $2,500 should get you a good used one.

Low end: Honda HRX (HRX217 or HRC series.

I got two HRX217's and they do good when we can't use a commercial walk behind or zero turn.

Expect to spend a grand ($1000) if buying new, a few hundred used
