Comcast’s 1Gbps for $70 per month

With Google Fiber headed to Atlanta this year, Comcast realizes that it has to step up its game. And now it’s beat Google Fiber to the punch by announcing its own 1Gbps Internet service that is now live in certain trial markets in Atlanta.

This being Comcast, however, there are some inevitable catches.

As DSLReports notes, you will be subject to data caps on this new service unless you sign a three-year service agreement with the company. The upside to signing this three-year contract, in addition to not having to put up with data caps, is that you’ll pay $70 per month for your Internet service. If you don’t sign a contract, you’ll have to pay $140 per month and face the prospect of getting hit with overage fees if you surpass monthly limits.

Comcast is delivering this service through DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which means it doesn’t have to build a new fiber network from scratch as Google Fiber has done. Comcast is rolling out this service in Atlanta and Nashville in the first half of this year and plans to bring it to Chicago, Detroit and Miami in the second half of 2016.

I work from home using 2 computers accessing remote sites via VPN as well as multiple personal computers/laptops, tablets, smartphones over wi-fi, printer, alarm system, & smart tvs so it's imperative that I have sufficient speed to handle the load

Guess we all have different demands for the same devices.

I have the blast internet not sure what the speed is on it but when I am using torrents I get about 3mb down.

Depending on where you are thats 75-105Mbps which is one of the faster Comcast tiers... US avg is about 12 Mbps... not an enjoyable experience with multiple devices.

ISPs have failed to keep pushing the envelope to increase speeds until Google started showing up offering 100x the speed for $70/month. As we have more and more connected devices bandwidth becomes more and more important... especially for Black people. The digital divide is real.

I feel you, but you gotta read the fine print with these assholes.... does it guarantee the rate for the entire 3 years...if not how much notice do they have to give you before raising the rate, whats the fee to get out of the three years, is there throttling on downloads and/or uploads, is your new modem spying on you, is it being used as a wifi hotspot without your control.....etc

ok i just got off the phone with them sons of bitches at Comcast.. cussed out the foreign bitch that could barely speak engrish.. finally got to a supervisor and he bumped me to the blast speed 75DL for $49 a month

i can't wait to get home and try this shit to see if it's any different...

As promised, Comcast has launched the company's ultra-fast gigabit cable service in the company's first market: Atlanta. A Comcast announcement indicates that the DOCSIS 3.1 based service launch will only be a "trial" that will be made available to " a number of neighborhoods" in Atlanta -- not the full market. The service won't be symmetrical, with upstream speeds locked at 35 Mbps.

Users in Atlanta have the option of paying $70 a month if they sign a 36 month contract, or an "every day price" with no contract at $140 a month.



That's Comcast's attempt at price competition, given that Atlanta is one of the markets Google Fiber has targeted for deployment. Comcast tells me that while the $70 option will not feature the company's usage caps (which are being "trialed" in the Atlanta market) users on the no-contract, $140 plan will face usage caps. They also have the option of paying $35 per month extra to avoid said caps.

The heavy emphasis on pushing users toward the three-year contract option is so that Comcast can lock customers down in contracts ahead of Google Fiber's deployment in the city. Unlike the company's 2 Gbps "Gigabit Pro" offering, this new gigabit cable option will not feature activation or installation fees. Contract customers will face a $350 early termination fee if they cancel while within the contract period.

"Our Atlanta customers will be among the first in the world to enjoy this new Gigabit technology, and we’re looking forward to learning more from these early adopters about how they take advantage of these ultra-fast speeds,” Comcast says of the launch. “The capabilities of DOCSIS 3.1 are incredibly exciting, and we are the first to market with a Gigabit offering that runs over our existing cable infrastructure.”

Comcast has previously stated that Nashville will join Atlanta in getting the faster DOCSIS 3.1 upgrades early this year, with Chicago, Detroit, and Miami on deck for launches later this year. Comcast says that feedback received during these early trial launches will "help ensure future market rollouts deliver the best possible customer experience."
