It should be overkill, but for some damn reason, they fuck it up every time. The stakes are too lopsided in this show. You notice when the Avengers assemble they're fighting aliens, robots, or at least Hydra soldiers with alien weapons. This team is fighting hired thugs throughout history. They're fighting guys with guns using a nuclear man, a fake Ironman suit, and a world class assassin, it feels like overkill.

1. Jefferson and Stein are clearly the most powerful entity in the group. They should never be more than a few feet from one another. EVER.
2. Hawkgirl is the only one who can actually kill Savage. So unless they plan on capturing and imprisoning him, she should never be in harm's way, or off the ship for that matter, until it's go time.
3. Sarah and Ray should be the only ones doing any kind of recon or scouting. Period.
4. They have a time machine. Use that shit. Don't know where Savage is? Try going back in time a couple of hours before you last fought him. He's probably in the same fucking area.
5. Here's an idea. Why don't you go back in time to before your wife and kid got merc'ed and PICK THEM THE FUCK UP?
Even if you still have to go back in time to kill Savage and reset the timeline afterwards, you wouldn't be sitting around all lonely and emotional while you work that shit out.
Which rules? Not necessarily disagreeing...I just don't remember. All of this would make sense to a degree if you weren't ignoring a couple of rules they laid out at the beginning, this most recent episode and through the use of some admittedly, not-so explicit logic. Of-course the show could have done a much better job emphasizing some thing. But, nonetheless, Carry on...

like a i said before savage is mvp. without him show is boring
Yeah like I said in my post above I'm tired of the team hunting Savage. They have their full team going forward with Hawkman dead and Heatwave supposedly dead. There won't be any more character deaths. So hopefully they can better advance the story and character progression.Dude is annoying as fuck, tho. And there is no shortage of villains and/or heroes that they could work into the show.
Savage's purpose on this show is nothing more than a "call to arms" and reason for the team to start off. The sooner they get off of this weak ass storyline and into something more interesting, the better.
Like I mentioned earlier the show is not the best written and I'll give reasons for that in a few. Here are some of my general thoughts at the top of my head regarding this questions and some other things
1) People always ask why don't they just go back in time to when Savage was born and kill him?
First, when exactly was Savage born and where? NOBODY KNOWS!
Second, If somehow they figured that out who exactly is going to kill a Baby? a Child? (Minority Report type moralistic questions)
2) You ever notice how they always stress about not interacting with your past self etc? Have you also noticed to date and a direct reference and possible answer to one of your question about jumping in time to just before Savage killed his wife and kid. Curious, Why haven't they jumped to the future in ANY time period? To be more specific in any time period that Rip Hunter is alive and active as a Time Agent? -Clue!
3) Notice in the previous episode they couldn't track Vandal Savage at all because the on-board time-traveling computer didn't have the latest updates. Why is that important and what does that tell you about their capabilities pinpointing exactly where x,y, and z will be at any time/space? Furthermore, I will point out why does the computer give probabilities instead of certainties? There is a 76% chance that Savage will be at this place and that time instead of 100% ?
I listed all of that to say the following: The show is supposed to be an action, don't think too much and have a great time watching the series kinda thing(Who's your audience? Discovery Channel or the CW?). It's not Star Trek and we shouldn't forget that. It doesn't excuse not trying to balance a good story telling experience and the rest. But, I will emphasize this especially as I've started developing a real interest in the production of these things. They honestly don't get alot of time, resources and capital to make these things. From what i've been reading they get like 2-3 days to write the show, send it off to people to prep the sets, locations etc. The actors, directors etc to get and shoot and on to the next episodes. Some craziness like 7-14 day turn around time.
I'm just appreciative of what we have even with it's flaws because the alternative is likely not having it at all...
1. I wouldn't suggest they go back to when he was a child and kill him. Dude has been around for thousands of years, affecting and influencing things, so simply erasing him would probably affect a LOT of things no one has even thought about. Somebody (Rip) needs to determine the general timeframe in which ending Savage's continued existence would have the least effect on the flow of time. Logically, this would probably be sometime in Rip's own lifetime, but before shit went sideways with Rip's family.
2. Not interacting with your past self is a no-brainer in any show involving time-travel. Without going all "butterfly effect" from a cause/effect standpoint, it also stands to reason that killing or even seriously wounding henchmen all throughout time has got to fuck something up somewhere along the line. A few no-name cronies have died at the hands of some of the Legends, possibly before they would have normally fathered kids or killed another party. How's the timestream going to correct for that?
3. They don't really need to "track" Savage. If you know that you last fought Savage at the intersection of Bewick & Mack on January 1st, 1984 when you showed up at 12 noon, then it should be a lot easier to figure out where he was at 11 am, an hour earlier that same day, rather than letting him escape and trying to figure out where he went a year later.
It's not that I don't appreciate the fact that we have the show, but if you're going to use time travel to drive the show's premise, you have to either apply some much needed common sense, OR place some real, not arbitrary limits on how that time travel is going to work. Quantum Leap did a good job of this by having the time travel navigation stuck on "random". The older Doctor Who series addressed it by often limiting the ability to go to an exact time and place, instead arriving in a general approximation of when and where he wanted to be.

I knew they wouldn't take it that far. Comic shows/movies don't go that routeanyone watching this episode..? kind of surprised they not calling Jax the N word seeing as they in the 1950s..
i might be reaching but I'm guessing Mick is Chronos.
the old tv saying is no body no death. I wouldnt be suprised is Captain Cold let him live but he was recruited by the time masters to take out Rip and his former comrades
If they didn't show him kill him he is alivei might be reaching but I'm guessing Mick is Chronos.
