Rey was central to the story. Finn wasn't. Episode VIII wouldn't make sense if Rey was left out. Think about that. This is HER story. Finn is just along for the ride.

If Boyega was dropped from the sequel, they would drop Finn from the story. They wouldn't replace him like they did Terrence Howard in Iron Man. He's not that important to the story. It would continue without much issue. He's more Captain Panaka than Han Solo in that regard.

lightsaber heavy? ninja a jedi uses force telekinesis, jedi mind control, force enhanced physical feats, has force precognition, etc. you didnt see any of that in the trailer. if you thought Finn was going to go from storm trooper to jedi in ONE MOVIE you're an idiot. Rey aint even no cot damn Jedi. hell, Kylo aint even no full dark force user (sith is a particular sect, he aint one of them at all).

No Poe escape, no BB-8 reaching the rebellion, no rescue of Rey from the Starkiller, no destruction of the Starkiller, no saving Rey from Kylo, as it was his SCREAM that woke her (force scream maybe?) no delivering of the map to the rebellion (Poe to Finn: "You completed my mission!") and no finding of Luke. these are FACTS, not opinions, as i can follow a story, while you're making up shit to suit your self hate.

yes, i'm saying it: if you hate Finn you HATE BLACK PEOPLE, and see ONLY the negatives while ignoring ALL the positives.

Rey ran, let loose the rathars damn near killing everybody, screamed and cried, was a trembling damsel in distress up until the last 10 minutes, but yall arent attacking her for being useless or weak. she didnt have shit to do with getting BB-8 or the map to the resistance, saving Poe or destroying the starkiller.

Poe failed to get BB-8 and the map to the resistance, got captured, gave up the info about the map to Kylo, forgot to unclamp the mooring line to the tie fighter, and got shot down, then wandered off into the desert without a fucking care about BB-8. yall arent talking shit about him though.

Han wasnt shit in this movie but a fuck up...lost his son to the dark side, abandoned his WIFE, got caught by his employers after double crossing them, LOST his haul of rathars, AND ended up a lightsaber shishkebob...but yall aint talking shit about him either.

your disdain ONLY falls on FINN, who out the bunch is the MOST EFFECTIVE character. what does that tell you about yourself?

Rey saved Finn from the rathtars, remember.

Poe and Han were mostly forgettable, I'm focused on Finn because:
  1. That's who the discussion has been about
  2. He was the character I was most looking forward to
  3. His character was the most disappointing since the marketing showed a different character compared to what we were given.

first off we don't know what will happen in the next two films he very well may become a jedi or force adept to some degree...
any disappointment you feel is on you and any points youve raised to show why have been debunked..dude its not even decent point/counterpoint anymore cuz youre running out of points and are repeating yourself:smh::smh::smh:
 
Watched it again yesterday. I think the hate for Finn is misplaced. The first time I watched it, I was disappointed in his character because of the bait/switch by the marketing team. However, after watching it again, Finn was the best character in the movie.
 
I watched it again and have changed my opinion of the film for the most part. I still hold some reservations overall, but if it goes down the path I am now thinking, this ish might be classic. Alot depends on the next movies obviously.

Now..the things that I have a different opinion on.

I am a little more optimistic that Finn may be force sensitive. But I'm still not holding my breathe, I could be reaching. Reasons being:

When Finn snapped from his Storm Trooper protocol he immediately appeared on Kylo Ren's radar. Not only did Kylo look at him before he boarded his ship. He also immediately knew it was Finn who escaped with Poe. Also, in the early conversation with Snoke and Ren..they made it clear that their fear was if Luke ever were to return, he would raise up a new generation of Jedi. Later, one of Kylo Ren's men alerted Ren that the BB8 droid ended up with Finn...That is when Kylo Ren went off! then..they interrupted Ren's tantrum and told him a girl was with Finn as well. That's when he choked dude out..but remember, Ren went off before he even knew a girl was with them.
The last reason, when Ren told Snoke he felt an awakening and Snoke said he felt it as well, they had not encountered Rey's character yet. Once Kylo later captured Rey, he did not realize she was Force sensitive until he tried to read her mind. Remember Snoke could not believe she could resist Ren and mocked him for it, that's when Ren told Snoke that Rey was strong with the force but untrained. They almost seemed surprised by this, but earlier they said they felt an awakening. Its possible the awakening they felt was Finn..or the combination of Rey and Finn..remember, their fear is Luke raising a generation of Jedi.

As far as the rest of the movie. I'm still hoping Snoke is Plagues...which would be dope. But I did hear Abrahms or someone squashed that rumor...Anyway...hopefully he's lying. Cause if Snoke is Plaugus, then maybe he is planning to possess the body of Kylo Ren or Rey, the offspring of his own creation..Annakin Skywalker. Maybe Kylo Ren's call to the light is Annakin trying to warn him. Also, if Snoke posses Ren's body, he would instantly be a bad ass and a formidable foe. Not some whiny chump that Kylo ended up being.

I believe Rey was certainly trained though and may have either been mindwiped, but more likely her memories suppressed due to trauma. In that flashback, it appears she is wearing the little Jedi padwan gear as a little girl...and she may have witness the Knights of Ren wipe out the Jedi in training. That ship leaving may have been Luke, but could have also been her Mother. There is no way she should whip Rens ass like that otherwise. The other possibility is she also is conceived by the Force...but I hope not.

bullshit. you hate Finn cause he's Black, while giving the others a pass cause they're white. you called out Finn cause he was scared and ran, ALL OF THEM DID. you called out Finn cause he lost fights, ALL OF THEM DID. you said Finn was useless and the story couldve gone on without him, thats FALSE, he was key to EVERYTHING, but you cannot see this, even though its a FACT. this sir, is self hate, plain and simple.

exactly. Finn did everything they showed in the trailers, AND MORE. plus he proved to be the bad ass of the bunch.

These parallels still don't explain them because they are more nuanced. They basically stand on their own unless you are looking at them superficially.

Secondly, it is a way better version of ANH. Just like Creed is a retelling of Rocky, and many movies are retelling of the same stories we always tell.

IMO, this is the 2nd best SW flick. Better writing and dialogue. More nuanced. It is still SW. It is only going to be so deep.

Therein lies the problem with doing it the way they chose to...

If Poe is supposed to have a significant role then they haven't established what it is yet..but the way they seem to be using ANH as the character template for this trilogy then Rey is a problem as she encompasses two characters.

In ANH there were three main characters The Hero, The Damsel and The Rogue

Luke was the hero, Leia the damsel and Han the rogue. Initailly Luke was in it because he was attracted to Leia and Han was in it for the money but by the next two flicks Luke had his destiny to take up his time and Leia and Han paired off..So there's something for all 3 characters to do on screen over three films.

In this trilogy..you are right, Rey is basically Luke AND Leia. She's the hero and the damsel while Finn is the rogue who was initially in it for personal reasons but is also attracted to the woman and it looks like those two will get together. That leaves Poe as odd man out...whats he gonna do for the other two films..be an ace pilot who shows up at the last minute or here and there?

Also the Star Wars nine episode series is about the Skywalker clan. That's it. That's who we focus on, that's who we follow. No Skywalker, no care! Lucas himself established this pattern and theme with 4, 5, and 6. When A New Hope starts off we see Vader and Leia, then we go to Luke, then back to Leia, then Luke again, some stuff with Vader and back to Leia and so it goes. Thats it. We see the same pattern in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. All the major points of all the films deal with a Skywalker. Han gets major screen time ONLY because of his connection to Leia. In fact in the OT the ONLY time you see characters who aren't Skywalkers on the screen is because a Skywalker is nearby whether thats Yoda, Boba Fett or Obi-Wan. Its the same here, clearly Finn is connected to Rey who has some kind of deep connection to Luke and Leia so that accounts for his screen time but who is Poe connected to??

I just saw Creed and IMO they did a disservice to that character by making it basically a Rocky 7 film. Here's a guy who clearly wished he knew his father, wanted to be like his father but left his father's home to walk in the footsteps of his mentor, live his life, live in his home and do exactly when he did. Donny Johnson didn't become ADONIS CREED, SON OF APOLLO, he became Rocky Jr. the son Rocky always wanted. Thats great for Rocky's legacy but not so much for Apollo's.

A PROPER Creed story would have had him struggle in LA..work with Creed's old corner man Duke Evers (still alive in his 70s)

Find his own style and way to go (even with the same girl only all this happens on the west coast rather than Philly) and go from there and in the end do a call back ONCE to Rocky where he visits Philly and asks Rocky who won the secret 3rd fight between them and just as Rocky is about to answer cut to black, and in big letters we see CREED...credits roll..

But that would be too much like a black film and couldn't get a greenlight without giving Stallone 50% of the screen time rather a few seconds at the end. :smh:

Poe was originally scripted to die in that crash scene. Abramms decided later he liked the character and wanted to keep him alive.
That is all. He was not supposed to connect with anyone, so if he has a relationship with anyone from the OT, it's something that was thrown together last minute. I'm guessing that he's just going to get a better death scene later on.

In an interview with Charlie Rose, George Lucas spoke about everything from his and Disney's branching vision to the deal itself. Lucas, who has always been protective of his series and even refers to them as his "kids," hasn't been looking back well on the deal with Disney (via Collider).

"I sold them to the white slavers that takes these things, and...," Lucas said before laughing and deciding it better not to finish.

The father of "Star Wars" also opened up about why he and Disney were split on their decisions for the franchise's future.

"They looked at the stories, and they said, 'We want to make something for the fans,'" Lucas said. "They decided they didn't want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing. ... They weren't that keen to have me involved anyway -- but if I get in there, I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I want them to do. And I don't have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up," he said. "And so I said, 'OK, I will go my way, and I'll let them go their way.'"

Lucas described "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the film that resulted from Disney's vision, as "a retro movie."

"I don’t like that,” he said. “Every movie, I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new.”

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has been a massive success in the two weeks it has been out, becoming the ninth-highest box office performer ever with $1.23 billion in global box office receipts.

The last three "Star Wars" movies produced under Lucas' tenure were also commercial successes, but they were largely panned by critics. By contrast, "The Force Awakens" has garnered glowing reviews -- the best in the series since Lucas' original in 1979 -- and even serious Oscar buzz.

Although the original Star Wars was inspired by The Hidden Fortess and other Eastern ideas, Lucas created an entire Sci-Fi universe. He did do something new with each film he made/had involvement in.

Had he directed The Force Awakens, he would have been panned for doing a remake of his A New Hope, but JJ got a pass.

Love or hate him, Lucas changed the game when it came to Sci-Fi genre films.

JJ Abrams, Michael Bay, Zack Snyder and others, will never do what he did.
 
I will never take anything away from Lucas for Star Wars' creation but he needed to go. Ali changed the game, but needed to retire eventually.

Right time and right place. All the ideas are not new. He took Joh Ford, Akira, Joeph Campbell, WW@ flicks etc. I don't mind. He created Star Wars. I honestly think only 1 1/2 of the originals are good and that being ESB and ANH. The others are not really good films. ANH is really not that good but it started it all. TFA is a far betteer film than ANH. So, JJ remade it. Big fucking deal. He remade it better. Just as Creed is a remake of Rocky. It is still a damn good movie.

Creed took elements of Rocky but was its own thing. Creed was not as blatant a remake as The Force Awakens.

One could watch Creed without ever needing to see the Rocky films. Can't say the same for The Force Awakens.

From studying film, working in movies and teaching I have seen the same movie a thousand times. We tell the same stories over and over again. I am not at least bothered by seeing the same movie over and over again.

Rocky was a great film. So what. Creed is a damn good remake. The only thing that matters is if it is effective. There have been plenty of remakes that tried to hit the same beats and failed miserably.

ANH is the beginning, but even though I am a die-hard fan I just don't think it is a good movie. It is technically great, but not very good. I can acknowledge that to myself and still be able to enjoy it. JJ remade it a lot better with better writing and characterization. I enjoy both. I prefer TFA to ANH any day. I can let go of nostalgia. I live in the here and now and I don't need to be transported back to my youth. Yet, I can appreciate them all for what they are.

IMO, JJ did a damn good job. I watched it for the 3rd time this morning and I enjoyed it more. It is just like MOS. I enjoy the more I see it, and I wasn't too keen on the MOS when I first saw it. I just chalk it up to being in a bad mood. There is one thing I learned from dj'ing. Never search fo music when you are overly excited, hungry, sick or in a bad mood.

It doesn't matter if a movie is the same. It is how you tell the story that matters.

Now..the things that I have a different opinion on.

I am a little more optimistic that Finn may be force sensitive. But I'm still not holding my breathe, I could be reaching. Reasons being:

When Finn snapped from his Storm Trooper protocol he immediately appeared on Kylo Ren's radar. Not only did Kylo look at him before he boarded his ship. He also immediately knew it was Finn who escaped with Poe. Also, in the early conversation with Snoke and Ren..they made it clear that their fear was if Luke ever were to return, he would raise up a new generation of Jedi. Later, one of Kylo Ren's men alerted Ren that the BB8 droid ended up with Finn...That is when Kylo Ren went off! then..they interrupted Ren's tantrum and told him a girl was with Finn as well. That's when he choked dude out..but remember, Ren went off before he even knew a girl was with them.
The last reason, when Ren told Snoke he felt an awakening and Snoke said he felt it as well, they had not encountered Rey's character yet. Once Kylo later captured Rey, he did not realize she was Force sensitive until he tried to read her mind. Remember Snoke could not believe she could resist Ren and mocked him for it, that's when Ren told Snoke that Rey was strong with the force but untrained. They almost seemed surprised by this, but earlier they said they felt an awakening. Its possible the awakening they felt was Finn..or the combination of Rey and Finn..remember, their fear is Luke raising a generation of Jedi.

As far as the rest of the movie. I'm still hoping Snoke is Plagues...which would be dope. But I did hear Abrahms or someone squashed that rumor...Anyway...hopefully he's lying. Cause if Snoke is Plaugus, then maybe he is planning to possess the body of Kylo Ren or Rey, the offspring of his own creation..Annakin Skywalker. Maybe Kylo Ren's call to the light is Annakin trying to warn him. Also, if Snoke posses Ren's body, he would instantly be a bad ass and a formidable foe. Not some whiny chump that Kylo ended up being.

I believe Rey was certainly trained though and may have either been mindwiped, but more likely her memories suppressed due to trauma. In that flashback, it appears she is wearing the little Jedi padwan gear as a little girl...and she may have witness the Knights of Ren wipe out the Jedi in training. That ship leaving may have been Luke, but could have also been her Mother. There is no way she should whip Rens ass like that otherwise. The other possibility is she also is conceived by the Force...but I hope not.
