Under new coach Fred Hoiberg, the
Chicago Bulls have only shown flashes of being one of the better teams in the East. At 15-11, the Bulls are underperforming, possibly
dealing with chemistry issues and
are even questioning their identity. And now they may be trying to make some drastic roster changes.
According to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bulls seeking an upgrade on the wing and are considering trading either
Taj Gibson or
Joakim Noah.
From
Wojnarowski's podcast (his quote below was transcribed by
BlogABull):
"Executives around the league, and people have told me, that the Bulls are very determined to add a talented wing player… and I’ve been told that the Bulls are open to ... whether it's Joakim Noah,Taj Gibson ... maybe not both of them, but either of them if there's a deal out there that they can bring in the best possible wing player available, they're open to it… They need more shooting."
Wojnarowski said this before
Noah got injured but
Joe Crowley of the Chicago Sun-Times confirmed the report on Wednesday and also added that the Bulls are taking trade calls on
Pau Gasol:
The likes of Gibson, Noah and Gasol might not even see the end of their current contracts, as several sources indicated that the Bulls are taking calls on all three players as the trade deadline draws near.
Chicago does have a glut of forwards with Gibson, Noah, Gasol,
Bobby Portis and
Nikola Mirotic. Portis has shown flashes of being a solid player and although Mirotic has struggled this season, he could be a good fit for Hoiberg's uptempo offense. But does that make Gasol, Noah and Gibson expendable now?
Noah is a free agent at the end of the season and Gasol could opt out of his contract, so the Bulls may be trying to get some value on both players now, just in case they leave in the summer. The same could be said for Gibson, who will be a free-agent in the summer of 2017.
If the Bulls trade any of the three, Gibson and Gasol may be the best options as Chicago could get better value from those two. Noah's value on the other hand, may be at an all-time low. He is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career and, at 30, Noah's best years may already be behind him.
However, the Bulls do need a wing player that will pair well with
Jimmy Butler, who they are committed to building around after signing him to max contract last summer. The injury to
Mike Dunleavy has truly hurt the Bulls as they are relying on
Tony Snell and
Doug McDermott, two players that have underperformed.
These are of course just reports and the Bulls may not end up doing anything. However, the Bulls do need a wing player and they could possibly be one of the more active teams before February's trade deadline.
Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol are reportedly on the trade block. (USATSI)
