In the process of contriving story twists and turns to support this spectacle, Alien: Isolation ruins the unique focus of its premise and moves away from the inspiration of the first film. It becomes something depressingly predictable for fans of the property who have been hurt again and again by underwhelming video game representations. Alien: Isolation isn't the worst Alien game, but thanks to its unrealized potential, it just might be the most disappointing.

In the same way that Ash respected the alien for its pure brutality in the original film, though, maybe I also respect Alien: Isolation just for how long, grueling and relentless it ends up being. Instead of completing the game, it feels more like I've escaped it and the nightmare it put me through. I no longer have to hear the sickening slump of the alien being spewed out of a vent.

can it play pirated movies? if so which file formats?

what's their response to used games? I heard there was some debate about how they'd handle that

Microsoft’s ‘RoomAlive’ transforms any room into a giant Xbox game

Kinect brings your living room to life


When Microsoft first demonstrated its IllumiRoom research project at CES last year it generated a huge amount of attention ahead of a next-generation Xbox unveiling. A video showed off a projection system that was linked to the Xbox to extend games from a TV to nearby walls, and appeared to be more than just a concept demo. It turned out that IllumiRoom was "just research" after all, but Microsoft is back this year with IllumiRoom 2.0: RoomAlive.

RoomAlive builds on the familiar concepts of IllumiRoom, but pushes things a lot further by extending an Xbox gaming environment to an entire living room. It’s a proof-of-concept demo, just like IllumiRoom, and it combines Kinect and projectors to create an augmented reality experience that is interactive inside a room. You can reach out and hit objects from a game, or interact with games through any surfaces of a room. RoomAlive tracks the position of a gamers head across all six Kinect sensors, to render content appropriately.

RoomAlive’s video projectors and Kinect combination is far too costly and large for living rooms right now, but Microsoft is imagining a future where this technology will be smaller and low-cost. Sony has created similar virtual reality experiments in the past, but Microsoft’s system can automatically detect the floors and walls of the room to let the system work anywhere. "There’s still lots to explore with RoomAlive as a gaming platform," explain’s a Microsoft Research spokesperson. "We envision a future where games can use physical objects as part of the game."

one last question... will the xbox one recognize and play/copy the media files that you listed off a USB drive or can you only stream them?
 
I use my usb drive and play movies and music from it. It doesn't support mkv yet but it will in the future. The app they recently added (media player preview) is like a beta. It's very basic and really needs some more features.

Both of the latest consoles from Microsoft and Sony started off with nonexistent media center capabilities, which was a big disappointment to people with massive digital movie and TV show collections. But thankfully Xbox One is already starting to turn things around. There's Microsoft's own media player app (which will soon support high-quality MKV files) and tomorrow Plex is coming to Xbox One. In recent years, much like XBMC, Plex has emerged as a go-to app for home theater diehards. If we're being honest, it's also used by people who download their fair share of Blu-ray rips, DVD screeners, and so on. Obviously plenty of Plex customers are using it legitimately — many have a catalog of self-made movie backups — but the other side can't be ignored.

When setting up Plex Media Server on a PC or Mac, you just point it to wherever your media is stored, and it'll automatically pull in high-res artwork, descriptions, cast information, and ratings. It's basically effortless; Plex organizes all your stuff and puts a beautiful user interface on top of everything. Once it's set up, you can watch your content using Plex apps across smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes, and now video game consoles. Plex was already compatible with Xbox 360 over DLNA, but this marks the first time the company has brought a native experience to gaming devices.

On Xbox, the Plex experience will be immediately familiar to users. It's easy to navigate, with your recently added movies placed front and center. With the "On Deck" feature, Plex keeps track of where you've left off in a movie or show, and will offer recommendations on what to watch next from your vault of digital content — not unlike Netflix. The Xbox launch also marks the debut of new discovery features, led by custom categories that are based on your viewing habits. (Yes, that's also borrowed from Netflix and other streaming services.) Plex has worked with Microsoft to make take full advantage of Kinect's gestures and voice-based control. When you're sitting back on the couch, that's obviously a huge convenience.

Plex Media Server is a free download for PC and Mac, but the best aspects are reserved for Plex Pass subscribers. You can either pay $4.99 monthly, $39.99 each year, or plop down $149.99 for a lifetime subscription. Benefits include Plex Sync, which lets you download content to your phone or tablet to bring with you on long flights or the daily work commute. There's also Cloud Sync, which uploads media files less than 2GB to cloud services like Dropbox and Google Drive so they can be watched anywhere you've got Wi-Fi. Other throw-ins include easy access to HD movie trailers and individual user options to control what friends peeking at your Plex library can stream. For now, being a Plex Pass subscriber is the only way you'll be able to use the company's new Xbox One app. It's free to subscribers at launch, and will be made available for a one-time fee to everyone else at a later date. Further, the Xbox 360 version of Plex isn't ready quite yet; it's coming "very soon."

If you're going to be up after midnight, you might want to consider hittin' up a 24-hr Wal-Mart.

When GTA V came out, I said fuck waiting in line at midnight. I chilled for a couple hours.

I went to Wal-Mart at like 3 in the morning, long after the midnight mob got their shit.

I just strolled in, damn near had the whole store to myself, went to the game section and they had the stacks of PS3 GTA on the register, I asked for the 360 joint, they popped open a fresh box of them, got in, got out, got snacks and everything.

And since then, if I gotta have a new release THAT NIGHT, that's the only way to do it.

That midnight release shit is for the birds.

At some point I'm gonna buy one of those Marvel or DC Lego games in the future. I enjoyed playing those Star Wars games back in the day.
