Here in NYC we basically had to wait until "Monster Week" on ABC Monday thru Friday from 4:30-6:00 to see most of those Godzilla, King Kong, Gamera & Gargantua movies (it was the Brown one vs. the Black one, if I remember right), every now & then they used to come on channels 5(WNEW), 9(WOR) or 11(WPIX) (our local affiliates back then) during the weekends as well, ALL Abbott & Costello movies used to come on here on WPIX channel 11 EVERY Sunday afternoon from 11:30-1:00, rivaled by WNEW 5's "Bowery Boys" @ the same time, it was like this for YEARS!!!

Shout out to "Wonderama" with Bob McAlister which used to come on from 8-11 every Sunday, it was a kid's interactive show that also showed Bugs Bunny cartoons, I used to watch that & A & C movies on Sundays when I didn't go to church, I knew NOTHING about football watching back then, lol!!!

But one thing you didn't mention was that CHANNEL 4 (WNBC) also had a "4:30 movie" weekday slot. Though I can't remember if it had a specific name.

The movie "WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS" monsters were Green (the evil one) and Brown (the good one). I don't recall Channel 7 ever showing it. But Channel 11 showed that shit constantly.

And thanks for bringing up Bob McAllister. Dude came by my community center in Da Bronx during summer '71/'72. We all had a field day. He gave out games. We had a talent show and shit. I was asked by the center head to do a ventriloquist skit (Sucked at it. But hey. I was 8/9). And McAllister gave out games.

They had some kind of 3pm movie down here in Arkansas when we first got down here. I only remember stuff like The Shakiest Gun In The West with Don Knotts playing. That Bozo The Clown they had playing locally down here was pure dee horrible. Chitown had Bozo on lock.

Whatever happened to those After School Specials? They were a little corny to me sometimes as a kid even but some of them were decent enough to hold my interest. They started Weekend Specials after awhile too I remember. I rarely watched those tho.

Man, TV is no longer an art. It has become a vehicle to sell products, sell ideology and brainwash the weak-minded. I grew up watching Saturday cartoons and to me, they are a form of entertainment that inspired imagination. The voice of television changed during the 80's and has continued to change in an attempt to control the minds of others. The human body has 5 senses that we rely on to survive. Sight is probably the most important, because the ocular nerves are connected directly to the brain. We rely upon sight and imagery and the brain convert these to signals that the brain understands. Scientist have experimented on animals and humans to see what effect sight has on the brain. Most of us know that most of us learn by two methods, either by sight or by doing. Hence, recorded programs for learning through sight. The TV is one of the greatest, yet misused creations ever made. After working for Nielsen Ratings and having the ability to query databases full of info collected from TV's and viewers, I started to realize the importance of TV and now how it is used against most people, targeting the weak-minded. So. I am not surprised about the direction of TV. Since most of these stations are owned by the crazy ass mega-rich, you can believe that watching it now, you must take a spoon of salt with every helping media pushed agenda. If you take national TV seriously and don't safeguard yourself and your children, I wish you luck.

Before cable all we had was after school during the week and sat mornings. That is now officially a thing of the past.

I can remember when there were only 3 channels and TV went off completely at night like around 1 or 2am or something.

In Chicago we had the morning block of kids shows before school like Capt Kangaroo and Ray Rayner and Clutch Cargo.

Then at lunch time around 12 pm or so they used to have a cartoon lunch hour. Stuff like Bozo The Clown, Magilla Gorilla and other 60s cartoon reruns for an hour or so. Bullwinkle used to come on at noon for awhile.

Then by 2:30 at the earliest the after school block would begin. Prince Planet, Battle of the Planets, Space Giants and all sorts of stuff.

Cartoons would end at about 4 or 5pm maybe. Of course the sitcom reruns were great for us kids too or the whole family actually.

Saturdays would start about 6am till about noon. Then sports and movies and specials or nature shows would take over.

Before ESPN all we had was Wide World Of Sports and just regular football, basketball or baseball games.

A few cartoons would come on Sunday morning as well till maybe 10am or 11am or something.

Whole different world back then.

Yeah they had lots of lessons. I just didn't watch very much. Of course I probably should have since they were directly teaching life lessons.

Cosby did a great job of that with Fat Albert and was entertaining as well.

But Yay! I'm celebrating because I finally found out the name of the cartoon with the dude with a lion and a motorcycle.

It was Young Samson! Meaningless nostalgic trivia but that was going to screw with my head until I remembered it.

If you remember Speed Racer I'm surprised you don't remember BJ and the Dirty Dragon you must have watched something on channel 9 when it was on. It aired on channel 32 in the early 70's then moved to 9 for a year.

We REALLY used to look forward to those pre-shows that highlighted ALL of the new shows for the Saturday morning line-up, as well as all of the returning ones, Jabberjaw, Superfriends, STOP That Pigeon!, Wacky Racers, Plastic Man, Sigmund & the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost, Grape Ape, the Laff-O-Lympics, Josie & the Pussycats in Outer Space, Shazam, Isis, Lassie's Rescue Rangers, and sooo many more, ALL enjoyed with your favorite sugary cereal (Frankenberry here!) & a bowl of cold milk!!!!!

THOSE were the days!!!

i used to get up at 6:30 to see which channel would air theirs first,then go down the list until either American Bandstand or Soul Train came on..






nowadays be glad for infomercials back then after you hear the announcer say"(such and such) channel now ends its broadcast day.." you would be scrambling to find something else to watch

I'm from Rochester and I remember when tv channels would sign on and off for the day and it was a big deal when we got channel 31 added to the UHF band. It brought Rochester's lineup to 4 stations.


I also remember my folks first tv. It was a 'portable' b&w 19" Admiral that only got 3 channels. No UHF on that model.

Getting up at 5am and staring at the Indian head test pattern till the first show came on. I think it was Shirley Temple and then The Three Stooges on the Saturday morning lineup.

I remember Tennessee Tuxedo and The Banana Splits but not the other two. The most important person series was ran between cartoons, like School house rock was, not sure if it was national or just local.

I'd much rather have today's choices. We used to only have cartoons in the morning, after school, and on Saturdays. Kids have them 24/7 these days(they can catch Qubo if they don't have cable).

What's amazing is that news hasn't been cut down. Most people have devices and don't need so much news. And the weather report isn't needed. They just need to scroll that or give a brief picture before commercial.

All these news blocks will be next. I remember when news was just 6 and 11.

I would love for this to be true, but the news is the major part of the psychological warfare machine and I don't see it getting whittled down anytime soon.

I don't care for the majority of the quality, and qubo tries to show retro, but it's just going down as smoothly as I would have liked.

Yeah, just on different devices and not on network tv.

It's all been compartmentalized where back in the day everything was centralized to the big three networks PBS and the print media like daily newspapers and monthly or weekly magazines.

Now we have over 200 plus cable channels and hundreds of blogs websites and social media. That fragments the audiences into separate groups and tribes. Think about it. With 200 cable channels most of us may watch only about 4 or 5 channels consistently. We may frequent 4 or 5 websites and even on the huge sites may only watch or visit 4 or 5 types of broad subject matter or topics.

It's laser split the audiences up into smaller and smaller sub sets and segments. With the exception of the occasional huge or major news story like 9/11 or the Boston Bombing or a weather disaster we all stay within our smaller tribes or groups according to our interests.

The old Saturday morning kid model on broadcast TV got squeezed out by technology.

I remember Tennessee Tuxedo and The Banana Splits but not the other two. The most important person series was ran between cartoons, like School house rock was, not sure if it was national or just local.

Don't feel bad as a lot of the stuff we caught in the 70s obviously was carried over from the 60s. I was too young to recall TennTuxedo & the kids/1st one but WaitTilYoufFather was only on prime time in the 70s like how they tried this in the 80s
