Funeral director explains why it took so long to remove Michael Brown’s body from street

POSTED 11:44 AM, SEPTEMBER 8, 2014, BY FOX 4 NEWSROOM, UPDATED AT 01:20PM, SEPTEMBER 8, 2014

FERGUSON, Mo. — One month ago tomorrow, Michael Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, Mo. For almost four hours on an August day in the middle of the afternoon, his body remained in the street.

There has been much criticism about the delay, and Calvin Whitaker, the funeral home director who was called to pick up and transport Brown’s body, said he was surprised at the criticism he’s heard.

He also explained the timeline(below), why it took so long, what he was doing for two hours after he arrived on the scene, and to whom Michael Brown’s family began to plead so that their son’s body could be removed from the street.

Watch his interview in the video player above, as Calvin Whitaker recounts his memories from Aug. 9.

For the first time you will hear from the man who was sent to pickup and deliver Brown’s remains that day to the St. Louis County medical examiner.

Timeline:

Saturday, August 9, 12:01 in the afternoon, Ferguson officer Darren Wilson encounters Michael Brown and a friend walking in the street.
-12:07 the shooting is reported.
-12:10 a paramedic in the area responds and finds no pulse.
-12:15 other Ferguson officers start to arrive
And the body is partially covered with a white sheet.
-12:43 country officers notified of shooting.
-1:30 county homicide detectives arrive
-2:01 Calvin Whitaker is called to pick up and deliver the body to the county morgue…
His county contract states, he must be on the scene within an hour.
-2:25 Calvin arrives at the shooting scene.
and 2 hours and 12 minutes later at 4:37 he delivers Brown’s body to the morgue. A 15 minute drive from Ferguson..

Which means for almost two hours, Calvin was at the shooting scene. Why the wait? What was happening? He explains.

This timeline is complete bullshit. Shooting is reported at 12:07 and 8 minutes later other officers start to arrive. Paramedics arrive before other officers by a whole 5 minutes... fuck outta here.

man what is wrong with the Black people in this town, FUCK:smh::smh::smh: , shit makes me want to cry. Stand up for yourself, PLEASE, be aware, think long term for your childrens sake

Ferguson:

Civilian review board coming Tuesday.

They are promising to lower their ticket/court revenue to only 10% of their budget.

Shutting down 1-70 again on Wednesday.

WHAT THE FUCK, those workers, one said, " 3 officers
, then said, " The one walked towards Michael and unloaded. ", in the local news report, I can not find it to prove it.

That can not be a mistake.

Do not believe all, unless you are on the ground. I'm gonna find out. One Photo op does not tell what's going on.

yea..this thread lost steam as well.

this is part of the problem. A lot of oppressed folks in America, and not just Black folks, seem to react to whats "hot in the streets". 9/11, Trayvon, etc. But if the situation aint affecting them directly, then they stop giving a fuck a week or two later.

I hate to wish bad things...but imho....something more drastic needs to happen. Folks dont seem to wake up until their stress levels are pushed to the utmost limits.

We have too many folks thats comfortable with bs.

props to those that understand that this is a marathon, not a race.

Shane bro I want to thank you for still reporting from the streets and trying to keep this thing on track! It's not all about what CNN or whoever is reporting, there's a lot of things going on that is not being covered

Who ever that is caring that American flag need to get rid of it. It seems that no matter what happens blacks will continue to follow whites. If we continue to live by white ideas, white values, white visions, etc. then we are truly doomed. You cannot fight against people that control you.

I don't disagree... We need an economy that we control. And we don't ever need to let them inside of it... Ever.

Was having a discussion about content with business partner and this was my response. Thought I'd share bc it's the same conversation.

Tip of the iceberg and worthy of being driven into mainstream consciousness. How can those who control content expect me to care about Israel or Ukraine when our children are being murdered across this country. Those that control content see fit to promote images, language, and narratives that support the type of violence almost specific to my community. They seem comfortable promoting and glorifying black on black violence in music while being critical of blacks for not expressing more anger towards those who've committed the violence (black on black crime, i.e. Chicago). Meanwhile Jay Z debuts his new Cologne ‘Gold' at department stores everywhere, Ti’s on TV doing the family Hustle thing, and Love and Hip Hop is a hit show.

Why have positive images been replaced with negative ones? Why promote music with subject matter that glorifies drug use and violence, and then criticize drug use and violence in black communities? Why silence voices that offer solutions and positivity? Why has Hip Hop become a litany of 3 minute commercials for the gun lobby? Why do a disproportionate number of AA men talk about ongoing criminal activity in their music, and what kind of fear does that produce? And how, in-turn, does that fear inspire laws like stand your ground to be passed? in my opinion, media companies CASTRATED music- black music in-particular- bc the power within the positive messages of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and part of the 90’s threatened the ideologies formed around the negative black narrative. Now almost 100% of music airtime glorifies violence or encourages extreme sexual behavior. And yet we allow conservative hosts to wonder aloud critically about those who act out the violence, as violence is directly marketed toward us while being sponsored by Toyota, Sprite, and Nike. Music that expresses alternative perspectives (encouragement or answers) has been shelved bc It’s inconvenient to allow an articulate black male to discuss these topics or offer solutions. What if people began to emulate the positive images instead of the negative, how would that threaten the narrative? Media has consolidated and in the process muted almost every positive impression of us as seen through our eyes.

All of this in a country where the goal of too many has been the subjugation or destruction of black people and our identity. Should we surprised? Why else sponsor, market, and sell violence while criticizing the people you’ve sponsored, marketed and sold violence to? Music from earlier decades lifted spirits and inspired activism. What does todays music do? Todays music fills prisons and inspires strippers; and activism is dead Todays music sells everything to everyone while normalizing the distorted black identity it perpetuates. James Brown flipped being black from bad to good in one song… 3 little minutes “i’m black and I’m proud." He infused black with pride. Tupac, lil Wayne, Jay Z, Young Jeezy, TI, Snoop, The Game, Biggie Smalls, Rick Ross, 50 Cent and countless others have done the same for thug; Ironic bc Hip Hop was full of conciseness when white listeners and corporations became aware of it- Tribe Called Quest, Pharohe Monch, Brand Nubians, The Roots (the tonight show band), BDK, Queen Latifa, Common, Public Enemy, KRS1, etc. Now, instead of wanting to be black and proud we want to be thugs. What normal impressionable black boy wants to be a thug? Only the normal impressionable black boy who wants to drive a car, drink a soda, and buy some new Jordan’s. Tell me the media barons don’t understand the POWER and spirit of a message when placed in music? Tell me i’ve concocted a crazy conspiracy theory? While, now, deeply imbedded is the new normal distortion that every black man is a threat… a thug. Police and vigilantes get rewarded for eliminating threats. Zimmerman raised 100’s of thousands of dollars and so has the St Louis cop who executed Michael Brown.

Lattimore They are not afraid of blacks, they are afraid of blacks waking up. Taking the world back from Satan is a hard job. And they will kill blacks before they give up their kingdoms of evil. America and the world is looking more and more like Jonestown everyday. It was always patterned after it for generations. If just one black male can regain control of himself. He can save the world and take it back from these bloody devil killers. The blacks that have become like white people are only doing what they were programmed to do.

Post-Michael Brown Murder, We Cannot Afford To Fall Back To Sleep

janaye-ingram_2012.jpg

News related to the killing of Michael Brown is still keeping people engaged on the issues of excessive force and police brutality. For so many people, Ferguson took the nation by storm, with the images that were almost a throwback to days gone by or similar to a box-office thriller where some end of the world situation creates martial law and citizens are just trying to figure out how they will make it through. But this wasn’t the 1960s and it wasn’t some made-up situation for ratings, this was real, just like the death of 18-year-old Brown.

Since then, there has been more engagement by your average, ordinary citizen in thinking about solutions that have to be applied to prevent this type of thing from happening again. There has been an increased buzz about cases that are similar that previously went unnoticed. Cases like that of Ramarley Graham, John Crawford III, and Victor White III have now been reported in new stories and gained new traction in addressing the alleged police brutality and excessive force.

But haven’t we been here before?

In 1992, I remember the outrage that stemmed from Rodney King being beaten by police officers, I remember them getting off and the riots that followed. I will never forget the bitter taste in my mouth as if I was the one who had been beaten and tasting blood. Where was the justice in that case? And there have been many others like it, where we witnessed the abusive nature of a few bad cops who use their badge as an opportunity to abuse citizens who they have somehow classified in their mind as undermining their authority.

The situations are then exacerbated when many of these cops are then exonerated of any wrongdoing.

In those other moments, how did we not fight harder, not push further? Maybe we believed it was isolated or that it wouldn’t happen again. Maybe we thought there was nothing we could do about it. And so instead of collectively pushing to end the racial profiling, the excessive policing, and the senseless murder of Black people in America, we went back to sleep. We slept with our eyes wide open as numerous other cases tried to wake us. We slept thinking that someone else would make the change for us, not realizing the need for collective power. We slept, maybe tossing slightly. Hearing the call, maybe we opened one eye, but just as soon, we rolled over and went back to sleep.

This moment has shown us that we need change.

We need to change the way we think about our power as people and how we leverage it. We cannot afford to go back to sleep. We are at the dawn of our own awakening and we must stay alert. The moment we shut our eyes, we risk another Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sean Bell, John Crawford, Ramarley Graham, Amadou Diallo, and the list goes on. We owe it to ourselves and to our sons and daughters to fight what our reality is and give them a new reality where they don’t have to feel that they are automatically going to be a suspect or even worse, a victim.

We must register to vote; we must push our local, state and federal elected officials to create new policies that protect us and we must work with police to create communities where trust can be built. We cannot go back to sleep. Too many lives depend on us.

Dkos diary. Good read:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/...New-Evidence-in-the-Michael-Brown-Murder-Case

Edit: This is the second time I have seen the violence against/killing of black men/people as being done by proxy. The diary above references it regarding white people giving money to people who have killed black people but there is this one lady that used to diary on Dkos, http://blackwaterdog.wordpress.com/ (she doesn't blog or do diaries anymore but that is her blog. Dkos sort of ran her off and harassed her to death because "picture diaries" weren't real diaries. BS...images she posted of Obama were powerful) Anyway, on twitter she said she thinks the violence against black men are because they are a proxy for Obama. They don't want him in the white house, they can't get to him, so they kill other blacks in his stead. I know before she was thinking this I was thinking for months how it seemed the violence was increasing, but I didn't tie it in to Obama's election. It could just be we are hearing about them more because social media gets the story out when local press won't. I'm not saying one way or another if this is the case, and it's not just men being killed, but it was food for thought.

Good post.

As much as we may want to blame Whites for being the main ones embracing bs perceptions and pushing propaganda...truth is a lot of Black folks embrace it as well. A lot are willing participants for a pay check. Is it because Black Artist can be easily controlled & bought? Or is it a "go along to get along" situation?

Yea....Theres a lot that can be said about your post.

We need more viable options. Having "a white daddy" as your only way out aint helping shit. He may feed you...but you have to sell your soul for that dollar.

A lot of these artist are so thirsty for money and fame ( I can dig deeper into that as well). Instead of making less, but good money and having control over their art..they would rather get raped via contracts and act like sambos just so they can be seen on TV; acting as if theyre making millions.

It's been over 30 days, the feds came in,and the cop still hasn't been charge.

:smh:

The Obama Admin sending Eric Holder to Ferguson was a joke.
Nothing happened because the Black folks thats there dont have any political clout.
simple as that!!

We know shit like this is gonna happen again. Thats why we need Black folks NATION WIDE to plan ahead. Having a lot of protestors and stopping local business revenue is a start...but you need to have connections with folks in high places as well.

Keep a few "puppets" on your payroll.....

Thank you.

I skimmed through it.

Does it mention that white witness say there were 3 officers there!!?

No, but it basically asks the question, how are they going to spin it now that there are white witnesses, since none of the black witnesses were good enough.

I swear my blood did a low level boil every time reporters,( even ones who seemed to believe the witness accounts)referred to the witnesses in a way to relay that regardless of what they saw, because they are black and the victim was black, the testimony is no good/had to have had some sort of collaboration/ or inferred they were lying because they hate white people/police/authority or wanted some type of racial payback. White privilege is real.

That's why I think a lot of steam got taken out of it all unless you're here in STL.

Is it really white and black?

Is it a racial cause for liberals to stand with, even though they are who will give us up the second they get their first mortgage. ( As they did in the '60s ). Or is something they do not wish to face. A deeper problem.

Bottom line, if a witness clearly says there were 3 officers there, where are the other two uniformed witnesses!?
