It's been awhile since we've seen Countess Vaughn on our TV screen. However, the actress who is best known for her roles on "227," "Moesha" and "The Parkers" recently appeared on "The Doctors" to discuss her horrifying experience with lace front wigs.

After a five-year long love affair with the hair pieces that require constant application of wig glue to stay in place, Countess realized that she had developed a severe scalp infection. But because she couldn't accept that a wig could be causing such damage, the actress let the oozing and hair loss that resulted from the infection go on for six months before consulting a dermatologist.

"It's crazy how one day everything's fine then the next thing, the simplest thing, can mess up your life," Countess said while taping the CBS show.

Now the 35-year-old star uses eyeliner to fill in her diminished hairline and discolored skin, which many people assume is caused by vitiligo.

And Countess isn't the only celeb we've seen suffer a follicle fail. Supermodel Naomi Campbell and superstar athlete Serena Williams have also experienced similar hair loss issues thanks to the prolonged use of hairpieces.

Furthermore, there have even been reported instances of death connected to the high toxic levels of hair glue.

“I was embarrassed, you have to be at home, and be bald,” Countess said while holding back tears. “I had to go through this to teach my little one that you have to love yourself before anyone else will.”

I'll never fully understand why our women chose their hair over their health despite knowing the dangers of wigs, perms, and weaves.

I am surprised after that great doc that Chris Rock did that all of this stuff didn't begin to die out.

Cuz the majority of the menfolx aren't actively checking for natural chix. If that was the visual preference, women would seek to attain it. They might SAY that is what they want, but actions speak louder than words, and they don't go unnoticed. Yes, I'm generalizing (somewhat), yes I've seen the afro/dreads/natural/curly hair threads on here, and no I don't have a perm or a weave so I'm not being defensive.

Pretty much. Doubt black women would be on wigs/weaves as much if it was the desired look. If chicks wig wigs weave got shitted on like the ones without then more black women would be natural.

Do you believe that if black women all went natural tomorrow that black men would stop being attracted to them?

Do you feel that we would all just get white women?

I remember when Chis Rocks doc came out and he had to go on Oprah TWICE because Black women were in tears angry with him for reveling their 'personal business' to the world.

What I don't get is...it IS difficult to maintain a natural look and not cheap either BUT it is MUCH cheaper and healthier to go natural then to continue to relax or get a weave.

But I will ALSO say in a corporate setting your look especially your hair is HEAVILY scrutinized.

I think it depends on the man and I've got mixed feeling about it to begin with. I don't frequent hair sites as much as I did when I first went natural, and there are more natural celebs now, so folx are more accepting, but people have actually ended relationships over hair and going natural. For the most part, I figure good riddance and they were lucky to find out now how fickle a person they were dealing with before something major...illness, disfigurement..would happen.

I say mixed feelings because I think if you've been with someone for a long time, I think they should be consulted before you make a drastic change, but in the end I think you have to do what what makes you happy. I think a lot of times tho, the objection isn't the texture of the hair, but the shortness, as you either have to cut off all the processed hair, or grow it out over time and dealing with two textures is a pain. I could only do it for 8-9 months before I cut it off.

One man's perspective:
http://www.bgol.us/board/showthread.php?t=747062

"If men liked the natural look" blah blah bull shít rhetoric.

It's not men putting relaxers in their daughters' hair from the age of 9. Last time I checked, I doubt the first thing a prepubescent girl is thinking about having "straight" looking hair to attract boys. But how would a young girl even know what her natural hair looks like if her mother has been perming it before she even reaches an age when she can decide for herself.

Now I'm not saying there arent men out there who prefer long straight hair as to natural hair and I'm not negating the years of negative imagery that has damaged black men and women's perception of themselves and each other.

But when are we finally going to take personal responsibility instead of blaming everyone else. I don't see the media, black men etc forcing young girls to damage their hair.

Don't use men as a cop out!

Women wear weaves to deal w/ their own emotional baggage, lack of self-esteem and their own insecurities. If women want to do ANYTHING intrinsically valuable to attract men, they should learn to be more motherly, respectful, nurturing, educated, intelligent, obedient, and embrace all other traits that make you a desirable mate and companion. Black women instead chose to fault black men's personal taste for their own self-inflicted undesirable features.

What man do you know goes around saying that is a sexy ass lace-front wig you got on, girl? Men see face, ass, tits and legs. NOT HAIR!

You all must learn to become responsible and accountable for your own mess ups. Look in the mirror and acknowledge your fuck-ups and stop blaming the black male.

Nothing I have stated in this post is meant to be personally disrespectful to you or black women in general.

It's not difficult to maintain a look, but there is a learning curve as relaxed hair behaves differently from unprocessed. Well I should say it hasn't been difficult for me, but I guess it depends on what you do with it. I wear mine in a curlyish fro or puff most times. I used to do twists but I don't have the patience for them anymore, plus they unravel by day 3. I straighten it once to twice a year to go get a trim, and that's all the outside involvement it requires. I've always done my own hair tho, even when relaxed, I really only went for trims and cuts. The only thing I miss is that when my hair was relaxed you could tell it was "done" or styled. If I get the urge for straight hair, I can do it and then go back to having texture. I don't do braided styles or anything. If you want something more structured or deliberate, then it can cost time, or money if you want someone else to style it. There are thousands of videos on youtube tho, and several sites with good info. The money I go thorough is just trying new stuff for the heck of it.

People always say natural hair is not "corporate friendly", but feedback from other naturals is that BLACK FOLX don't think it's corporate friendly and are the ones with the negative comments and associations with kinky hair. There have been issues in the past publicized with employers trying to limit braids, etc and lawsuits that resulted, but anything lately it's black folx wanting to ban natural hair. (The black business schools, some charter schools)You don't want it to appear unkempt, free form fro's etc, but you can have a conservative natural look that is professional. When I went natural, I only ever got negative comments from family, tho that didn't last long.

From dating women with natural hair (and paying on occasion) I can say it is expensive getting hair professionally braided and twisted and the products to support it. And depending on what you do with the hair it does go through a "ugly phase" when you are first growing it out and stuff. Many women tell me they couldn't deal with that.

the corporate thing is tricky...I think some women can get insecure if they NEVER went natural before. And also if its sudden the office can look at her like 'what you going through?'. And some cacs think because you have natural hair your more 'militant' then other Black folk. But I can tell you on interviews (not as much NOW) but when I was coming up that your hair style WOULD be held against you dreads cornrows etc and this goes for MEN and WOMEN.

and you correct that OTHER Black people tend to be have more issues with the hair thing...

Find me 10 black women in a normal day that wear a natural hairstyle....

its not the demand....its the supply that is the problem...black women mainly (90+%) only supply perms wigs and weaves for us to even consider.....

Slow down.

Black men don't see hair because they've pretty much accepted that fake hair comes with the package of a black woman. Sure, whatever, not ALL - but that's the situation.

Black women and their hair has always been like your well-off relatives good furniture. That shit was so off-limits until you built up a mind thing about even going in that direction.

In '03, I got into a relationship with a mixed race black woman, and I'll never forget the day she was combing her curls in the bathroom mirror..

...I was fucking mesmerized. It was like, 'Wow, this is REAL hair. Not a piece sitting on the dresser or bathroom sink waiting to be put back in. "Shit, I started touching the shit, and she didn't snap at me. From that point on, I refused to fuck with a woman, long-term, who didn't have real hair. A woman's hair is a major part of what makes her beautiful...

...and sometimes, a motherfucker just wants to take a big whiff.

More like she almost died from an allergic reaction to the wigs adhesive glue and tape... But then again, that headline would not have been as shocking..

Most dudes arent' concern with hair etc...
They looking at the other assets...and just trying to hit. Women with all that fake shit from their face down to their ass is totally horrendous. Yet there still would be women wearing all that bs even if men at checking for them.

I agree. Not only that but being brought here by force, black folx didn't have the tools to care for their hair they were accustomed to. They were also in survival mode, and not able to do self-care. They often had fungus, ring worm and bald spots due to improper care. http://abagond.wordpress.com/2010/02/11/black-womens-hair-a-brief-history-1400-1900/ There were actually laws in some places at one time that black women couldn't go out with their hair uncovered.

At one time, white folx wouldn't hire us in the workplace unless we were light, bright. So it was to our economic benefit to try to blend in. I know how it originates, tho it is more and less complicated now. Some are holding on to cultural baggage and self hate. Some folx just like straight hair, and as far as I'm concerned that is ok too.

Regarding male preferences: whatever. I know what women do and why. I'm not placing blame, male preference isn't the only factor, I think the media plays a bigger role, but it IS a factor. There are thousands of stories from naturals about how male attention changed once they went natural. Tho it does weed out the shallow and unevolved. IMO, I look better with textured hair, but I get more compliments with it straight. That's fact for me and countless others.

Black men don't see hair because it's mainly trivial. The emphasis on hair worth and beautification is something that has been imposed on black women by the system of white supremacy that determines what beauty is. This system has determined the beauty standard for decades and black women have blindly assimilated themselves into it w/o understanding how much it belittles and dis-acknowledges different types of beauties that fall outside of the blonde hair and blue eyes characteristics.

Black women preach the gospel of hair-hate to their offsprings at an early age. How many times do you catch a relative (aunties and cousins) saying something like "ooh, she got that good hair"? :smh::smh:

Trust me bro, it's a self-inflicted shot that has devastated black folks.

I've had wigs on. When i shaved my head for treatment i wore wigs. I didn't like how my head felt with no hair. I've never had a weave but i fully support women who do what they want to do. And what you've said here i've said a multitude of times.

We do what we think guys like. And or what our mother's told us and did for us from the time we were growing up. If we heard guys liked big titties we'd stuff our bras. If guys liked blond hair, we'd dye it. Guys like big asses we'd try to get that.

We see who guys flock too. We do that to get guys. These dudes will deny it.
