Oil Rig Work Apparently Pays MAJOR Bread...

what is/are the "job title(s)" i should search for??

anybody know..

What are your skills?

There are jobs offshore from cook, to et, electrician, mechanic, sub sea engineer, geologist, DPO, Medic, roughneck, roustabout, survey, casing, wire line, cementer, safety man, etc.

If you go to rigzone, you can see a bunch of listings.

I've been doing rig surveys for about 2 and a half years now.
I love every second of working offshore because you get to save all your money.
Left my old job sitting in the office all day and virtually doubled my salary overnight.
The best decision I ever made was to go work for a drilling contractor.
Surprisingly I was getting by without taking HUET training until recently.
When they flipped that mechanical chopper over underneath that water I was like: :eek:
But I had to get certified to go on Shell platforms.
So it is what it is.
Working offshore is definitely where the paper is.

That chopper shit is fun man, I'm due to re-up this year.

I'm in the middle of gettin' a certificate in process technology..what types of positions would that qualify me for?

I searched "process technician" but not much comes up...i need to know the title of the position where you walk around and check the equipment in the refinery and make notes as to what needs fixing...

and you work 12-hour shifts with 5 days on and 5-6 days off...

also i got invited to an O&M Pre-Employment Assessment on March 5th with Chevron... but they didn't tell me what to expect...

if anybody on here can tell me what to expect ... are they gonna give me a physical exam? am i gonna be takin' a basic skills test with math, science and english questions on it? is there anything else i should know about it?

this is extremely important to me...any help would be greatly appreciated...

thanx in advance...

I found this via Google..but can anybody give me any sample questions..so i know what to study this weekend?

Industrial Information Test: Measures the ability to read, understand, and use information in graphs, charts, tables, and written passages to solve problems.

Mechanical Aptitude Assessment : Measures the ability to apply general mechanical principles to understand and solve problem situations

Workplace Attitude and Behavior Inventory :
Measures personal characteristics important to success in the job applied for.

a'ight..so i took the pre-evaluation test with chevron...and passed..

my experiences...

with a quick google search..you'll find many people compare it to the ASVAB test the military gives...

i downloaded a book called "ASVAB for dummies" and studied that...

concentrate..on the Mechanical questions..and Basic algebra and physics questions..

like how Levers, Pulleys, and Gears work...how to calculate the mechanical advantage of a Lever...if two gears are in mesh...and one is twice the size of the other..and the larger rotates at 30 revolutions per minute..how fast must the smaller one rotate?

stuff like that...

there's three test...an Industrial Knowledge test (40 questions)..a Mechanical Knowledge test (40 questions)..and a Personality questionnaire (125 questions)...

you get 45 minutes for each section...there's not much time to do any calculating..but most of the questions are common sense..if you think about them...but if you gonna take it...i would still study..so the mechanical concepts get drilled into your head..

they give you two pages of scratch paper..but there's no calculators allowed..

and they don't give you any formulas or any basic conversion tables..

so you have to memorize things like how to calculate the volume of a cylinder or the mechanical effort of a lever...or how many pints are in a gallon..etc..

they say there's no penalty for guessing..so when in doubt just make your best guess..you have a 1 in 4 chance of gettin' the right answer..which is better than a 0% chance..

there was about 200 people takin' the test with me...mostly dudes..all ages..and those were only the people whose last names started with A-G..so i reckon about 600 people took that test that week...

o...and on the personality test..they mix in a few background check questions..which if you pass the test and get called for an interview ..may come back to bite you in the ass..if you lie..

apparently chevron does an extensive background check...some people say they even call your current employer...

a'ight...did the interview....

they asked me to bring a copy of my résumé and photo I.D.

they scheduled me with 3 other guys (one dude showed up in a polo shirt and jeans?!)...and we each went to separate rooms where we were interviewed by 3 people...

they jus asked 4 questions...which came off a form they were readin' from.. and they wrote down my answer...

kinda like an essay exam in college ...except they were writin' down the answer instead of me...

they asked me for specific examples of when..somebody was doin' something unsafe at work...and what i did to stop them..

...an instance of when there was a complex issue at work...what was the issue..and what was my role in resolvin' it...and what was the final outcome..

...name an instance where there was a miscommunication between your department and another department...how did you resolve it..and what was your role in resolvin' it..and what was the final outcome..

and name an instance where you made a suggestion at work to make an improvement to workflow or protocol, etc....what was the issue..and what was your suggestion..and what was the final outcome...

one of my family members ..who's a supervisor at her job and conducts interviews...says if you don't have an experience at work to match one of the questions...just tell 'em that...you never encountered a situation like but if you did..you would have handled it like this.....and explain theoretically what you would do...

So the brothers on here that work offshore, whats your gig? I'm a diver and have been for 20yrs now. Trying to get overseas into the Singapore, Malaysian and qatar markets. Should be there by summer............ and yes, the money is real:hmm:

ROV Senior Supervisor.

Working offshore for about 7 years. Worked in Singapore, South Korea, Ghana, EG, Angola, Mauritius, The Gulf of Mexico, Aberdeen, and Norway.

The money was cool in the beginning, but much better now. Want to work 6-8 more years offshore and then do land based work.

This is jewel of knowledge.

Bump

jus got my response back..

didn't get the job...but they said they might have another training class in 6 months...and if they do...i could be considered for that one...

anyways...i got applications in with other companies so we'll see what happens...

What company? What are you interested in doing?

What company? What are you interested in doing?

i applied with Chevron...for an Operator Trainee position..in their El Segundo refinery..in southern california...

(sidenote: when i told my younger cousin about the job..he wondered why i was so excited about applyin' to work at a gas station..lmao)

it woulda been the perfect job..cuz i got family that owns apartments in Inglewood...

i woulda had like a 10 minute commute to work..

wasn't meant to be...i guess...

but i hear a lot of folks get rejected the first time...and get in the 2nd or 3rd time..

so i'mma jus keep on applyin'..and keep it movin'...

jus got back from Testing with Phillips 66...up in Pismo Beach, CA...

they gave almost the EXACT same test as Chevron...

i also applied for an entry level operator position..in their Wilmington and Carson, California locations..since those are closer to where i am currently..

should get my results back...within the next two weeks..

if you're gonna take the test...brush up on your mechanical concepts....

like gears, levers, pulleys, incline planes, charle's law, boyle's law...

google 'sample mechanical aptitude test'..to see what i mean...

and the other important test...was called "use of information" or something..

it had a bunch of charts and graphs and was supposed to see how good you are at interpreting them...

the final test...you can't really study for ...it's jus a behavior and work ethic test...

they were jus asking about your work ethic...driving tendencies...and how well you get along with others...

Man good to see this thread getting some airtime I haven't seen it in awhile

I'm actually in Fahaheel Kuwait it's like 520am...im out here working at a refinery called Equate decontaminating an Ethylene unit... We had a meeting with the plant manager yesterday and they said were saving them $2 million a day just in that one unit. And he's a white dude from Texas

They got us staying at Al Manshar Rotana Hotel... Hands down the nicest I've been in and I've traveled the world... I'll be in Cape Town in February doing a job at Chevron and I'll be in Greece in may I think... World travel is the shit

Man of Steel you'll get it bro just be patient and keep putting your stuff out there... I've seen operations personnel took em 8-12 yrs to get the job but the requirements and training vary by company and state... And operations tests are always the same and always EASY.

yeah...there's was about 80-90 guys...in there...about 4 brothas...15 hispanics..and the rest were white...

got to drive back home along the coast..which was nice...the views were amazing...
