Kanye West Compares Himself To The Main Character In ’12 Years A Slave’

 Dude Kanye has been touring internationally since his Glow And The Dark Tour.
Google that.

Naw man. I'm not talking about going out with one of the biggest artist that is arguably bigger than him internationally (Rhianna).

Now he's out by himself with Kendrick Lamar. I'm telling you from someone who has travelled all over the place.....people aren't checking for Kanye West like that. He's not taking his tour international because he can't sell an international tour with himself as the sole major act.

That's not a knock on him because it's great that he can tour period.

but YOU said the biggest artist of this era. That's laughable considering that said artist can't even do a world tour. You're overstating his influence and popularity.

I'm old school. I'm not in my 20s. Good music is good music and it's timeless. It will always get props. We have discussed this many times. Very little modern hip-hop or R&B can be considered timeless classics. Doesn't mean there aren't great songs being made. There are. But I don't dismiss new music or old music. Side by side comparisons reveal true greatness.

Hiding behind age or generations is a smoke screen. The music has to stand on it's own merits. Age is not a convenient excuse. In other words that has nothing to do with anything. Has music improved as a whole since the 70s 80s or 90s? Truthfully?

Age is irrelevant.

Co-sign this 100 percent. This man knows what he is talking about

If I'm old, Kayne is old. That nigga is older than me.

My point is this man he has been part of 3 classics that were his own. This is fact.
He has produced/been a part of at least 4 other classic albums. This is fact.
He has produced at minimal 30 or more classic beats for other artist this past decade("The Truth", "Guess Who's Back","Lucifer", "This Can't Be Life" ,"Get By" etc. the list is just too damn long) This is fact.

Find any artist yet alone rapper with that resume. I'll wait.

your facts aren't facts in my reality/galaxy

if kanye is a genius, what about the ray charles, stevie wonders of the world?

if Kayne is a genius, we don't even have the words to classify those two. Comparing Kanye to Ray Charles is like comparing Dwight Howard to Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

But this is the problem. You have a loose a definition of genius as you have of "classic". I don't think Kayne has delivered 3 classic albums. My criteria for classic is a bit more stringent than yours homie. That's where the problem is. You're a more than a tad more promiscuous than I am.

I think you elevate talented to "genius" as easily as you elevate a "good" album to a classic album.

I disagree with your entire premise at the start so we have to decide what "facts" are first before we start arguing them.

it's either kanye cheapens the word genius, or calling ray charles a genius is an understatement

There is no other way around it. That's what I'm telling jwilliam85 he has to clarify what he means by "genius". Because we might be arguing about two completely different things as we haven't even agreed on the semantics of "genius". Because in Kanye's strongest category (music), he has maybe 5 percent of the musical capacity as a Ray Charles and that's being generous.
I think Kanye is extremely talented though and has a great ear for music. We are in regression if the representation of genius has gone from Ray Charles to Michael Jackson to Kanye West. To me, Kayne West belongs in the category is a great producer.... he's in there with Dr. Dre.

Say my niggas I don't write for Complex but numbers don't lie.

25 Rap Albums From the Past Decade That Deserve Classic Status/

Kanye is a part of 16 out of the 25 albums my dudes. I can't make this shit up.
And the list does even include Late Registration.:smh:

Like I said you dudes just might not be hip hop heads, so I can give you a pass. But in hip hop, this last decade, Kanye was the most important person. Period.

he's not in the same league is the good doctor

Not yet. While I was writing, I was already thinking I should have said "end up" in the same category as Dr. Dre. It's not even disputable that Dr Dre has been more influential musically than Kanye.

...but how many songs in the past decade are really hip hop classics?

Classics?

I can barely think of anything past 2000 that can be considered a classic.

Man, do people understand what a CLASSIC is?

Like eewwll said...

...good is being considered great, talented is being considered genius, and good albums are being considered classic albums.

How many songs can we name post-2000 that will be considered hip hop classics?

Not quite.

Define "a part of". Its a very vague and broad term that means nothing to most. And you cant hold Complex as the standard then discount them not including Late Registration as an afterthought. Either Complex is the standard and that standard doesnt think LR is noteworthy or Complex has a bad list. Cant have it both ways.

When I went back to look at Quincy Jones credits...

...I got mad all over again @ Kanye being compared to that dude.

That's like asking whose better between Sprewell and Jordan.

 Now niggas don't know what classics is, list don't matter, my personal choice trumps the popular consensus, blah, blah, blah. I get it my g's. Now niggas bringing in Dre, talking about tours and shit.

You niggas is too funny but yeah, ya'll have proven my point. He is probably the best producer in the 2000's and I can might argue with rap star. But nobody has his resume. Not even scared to drop an album Dre.

one guy is cementing his legacy, the other is dirtying his name with every passing month.

I don't feel like linking all the list about the top albums of the 2000's but what it reveals is that Kanye has a least two albums in each list and at least 5 production credits on classic albums in the list. I mean it almost embarrassing, niggas going back to Ray Charles and shit. I said in perspective of the 2000's.

I know what the fuck a classic is.

A classic is a genre-defining work.

The shit that generally comes to people minds when they think of a genre, in the context of this discussion.

The bar has been lowered so far in the past decade or so for everything that Kanye leaping over the bar easily probably does make him appear to be a genius. :smh:

I know shit was going left back in 98 when dude told me Silkk Da Shocker was more talented than Canibus. I fucking knew it!

Ok, so Kanye is a hip hop genius in comparison to his colleagues of the last decade? Ok. I can deal with this better than the other nonsense you were selling.

You sipping that "Jesus Juice"?

dre isnt a legend? im the only one that feels he shouldnt drop something just to appease the mob.

every 6 months kanye reminds us hes really an idiot. in another era he wouldnt even be a buckshot. and btw, buckshot is better than kanye.

We have been discussing semantics. You said classics and posted a link and the 4th album I saw was THE DIPLOMATS.

That's like you giving me a list of the best basketball players from last decade and the 4th person on your list is Josh Smith. I'm gonna have to question if you and I have the same meaning of the word "great".

It's the first list that pops up in a search for best rap albums of the 2000. Every other list he is at least half the list. Numbers don't lie.

If it's worded like that, I can accept it too. In the land of Lil Wayne, Two Chains, Nicka Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, and Drake... Kayne looks like a genius. Alright, I can go for that.

...shit, I remember last year my cousin asked me who did I think was the better songwriter out of Babyface or Neyo?

That's where the fuck we are.
