Kanye West Compares Himself To The Main Character In ’12 Years A Slave’

Genius based on what exactly? You're too easily impressed. Kanye is a insecure man and entertainer with a bloated ego and pathetic and equally sad need to be coddled and accepted. Pointing that out doesn't make anyone a hater. But It may mean those too blind to see that blatant truth are idiotic sycophants.

Insecurities is what breeds a lot of peoples drive to succeed.

You may be right. I don't care to dispute that. And everyone is insecure about something or at least has been. I have no issue with it. I just don't get the genius labels and support of his latest rant comparing himself to an enslaved free man who was taken from his family....in ANY context. You lose all credibility when you co-sign dumb shit like that.

I will call him genius based on his past exploits in music, fashion and culture but the slave part might be a metaphor that went too far.

Kanye is a genius?

Whatever just happened to being called talented? I doubt too many would have an issue with that label...

...but, genius implies something far greater than Kanye's accomplishments up to this point.

All this shit is subjective. Don't take it personal.

I here ya bro. When I think musical genius I think Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder. Not a rapper who made two good albums and cant even play a fucking instrument.

genius?

might be. iono... many who we now consider genius were seen as clowns in there day. he def has the clown part nailed down.

overall i jus think hes a broken negro living with a fucked up family. kim k is a useless enabler. son prolly on all type drugs under tht roof. kris jenner is the sick, manipulative matriarch (think jema on sons of anarchy or jilian on boardwalk empire if yall watch those...). prolly not the most nurturing situation for dude but we all make our own bed to lay in.

Serious questions

1. What is your definition of genuis?

2. What has Kayne done in fashion and culture that qualifies?

1. i think hes shown potential but... nothing.
2. nothing cept hes 1 of the greatest self promoters of alltime. kids like jwil who need something to latch onto fall for it hook line n sinker.

The nigga is only 36 fam. The thing is he's not the best rapper, not the best producer, not the most lyrical but he still has classics. If Kanye never rapped or produced you would have no Blueprint,Jesus Walks, Late R., Twisted Dark Fant., John Legend, Common-Be,Air Yeezy's, G.O.O.D Music, Pusha T, Niggas In Paris etc. You get the picture. Take Kanye out the picture you take 23% of BGOL multiple page threads, 10% of white comics material etc. Dudes an Iconoclast in my book. \

I can't imagine a Kanyeless world. :smh::(

This could be a semantic argument. Maybe people here have different definitions of what a genius is. I personally think it's now thrown around too much. Maybe I think of genius in too constricting of a fashion?

I think Kanye is a great producer but average as a rapper. He's a talented artist from what I've read (production, drawing, design)...

But I've also seen equally talented people get called a genius.

Actually, I've seen Kanye get called a music genius repeatedly.... but it's like he needs the world to collectively call him one...

what's with his incessant need to be praised though?

Homie, and I really, REALLY, hate to do this...

...but you're basically considering Kanye West great for doing the same shit I do on BGOL?

Megalomania? Check.
Trollish Behavior? Check.
Intelligent comments mixed in w/ all the controversial bs? Check
Love white women?

Ok, I'm just fucking w/ you on the last one...

...but, all I said is true, but that doesn't make someone great. That's just someone with the courage to say shit that they know will make people hate them.

...and just like Kanye, there are a lot of people who wish I'd just go the fuck away.

Are you serious?

I can't imagine a world without Michael Jackson's music. I don't think the world changes if Kanye's music was mass-deleted.

He makes really really good music... but it's not world-changing like you're making it out to be... this is subjective of course but like you said, he still very young. He's talented but he's one of a list of very talented artists.

Imma say this and I mean it in a big brotherly tone, not in a condescending manner..... You sound like a bitch fam. Check yourself.

 People are talking like he wasn't involved in classics. Lets list them:

Common- Be
John Legend- Get Lifted
Jay-Z - Blueprint- I also count the Black Album
Pusha T-MNIMN

Now lets get to him
College D.
Late R.
My Beautiful

And we aint gon talk about Air Yeezys, Watch The Throne etc

Mr. West has had the most sui generis hip-hop career of the last decade. No rapper has embodied hip-hop’s often contradictory impulses of narcissism and social good quite as he has, and no producer has celebrated the lush and the ornate quite as he has. He has spent most of his career in additive mode, figuring out how to make music that’s majestic and thought-provoking and grand-scaled. And he's also widened the genre's gates, whether for middle-class values or high-fashion and high-art dreams.

—Jon Caramanica, The New York Times

I couldn't said it better myself. :D

GTFOH, yall niggas is just old niggas.

You erase Kanye you erase his contributions Jay-Z, Common, John Legend, Kid Cudi to culture. You ain't trying do that. :D

D

Being involved in "good" albums is enough to mean the music world falls apart without that person?

I appreciate his music. I don't think the albums you've listed qualify as world-movers though.

But it's subjective. You have the right to your opinion. I don't think 40 years from now people are going to be talking about Late Registration like people talk about Thriller.

Thriller was a different space and time, you can't compare that. I'm speaking on 40 years from now when people think about music between the years of 2001-2011 Kanye's name will be one if not the one top artist of that era.

2001-2011 Kanye's name will be one if not the one top artist of that era.

This is where I think you're going overboard. Kayne will be ONE of many artists from this era. You're magnifying his position in music in a major way. He's not even the biggest artist in his CATEGORY.

J,

It is possible that you're unwittingly mistaking Kanye's ubiquity ...

...for great musical impact.

Miley Cyrus is proof that even a marginal talent, with uninspired music, and the right amount of controversy, can dominate the pop culture headlines.

Shit, we have pop culture staples who are famous for being famous. Look at Kanye's woman.

Are you serious? He is now leaking over into to the NEXT decade. You got artist like Usher, Nelly, Eminem who made have sold more during their reign but Kanye hasn't fallen off yet. The only other people in his sphere are Pharrell and Hov. His music gets the most attention on this very message board. Niggas was up all night reviewing MTDF, WTT, Yeezus when they first dropped.

Change ya tampon shawty you leaking right now. :puke:

You act like Just Blaze wasn't putting out equal and/or more heat on Jay's albums.

 Niggas get it through your skulls if Kanye was not around for 2001-2011, you would have no Blueprint, Be, John Legend, MTDF, Kid Cudi etc. G.O.O.D music was probably the best ran label during that time. Nigga was putting Talib K and Jay-Z together and making it work.

If you don't see his contribution to hip-hop let alone music during that era then we just going to have agree to disagree.

Are you serious? .

I'm very serious. I'm almost questioning if you are even thinking this through.

I will give you an example. In what way is Kanye West a bigger artist than even a Jay Z?

You said Kayne was going to be THE artist of this era. He's not even the biggest hip hop artist.

You can even argue that he's not even top 3 hottest artist RIGHT NOW in hip hop.

Kayne is only now able to do his own tour and he's not even leaving the U.S. (Canada doesn't count). Do you know how many major artist would laugh at the idea of a little baby ass tour like Kanye is doing? I'm not knocking Kanye. I'm putting your "PEDAL STOOL" placement into perspective.

He's the biggest artist of his era yet he can't even headline an international tour. Man sit your ass down.

Kanye a genius? Is this supposed to be debatable based on age or generation? In other words is Ye the GOAT in his field? In what field? Rapper or lyricist? Come on now.

Producer? We went through this during the whole Quincy Jones comparison. Again come on now. Hip-hop producer? GOAT? Well some may give him that. I would be willing to possibly concede that but then it's a debate of personal opinion. I have been a fan and supporter of dude since College Dropout but he kinda fell off IMO after the first 3 or 4 albums and his slow descent into his weird celebrity nutball antics.

Greatest hip-hop producer? I'd put him in my top 5 maybe. Dunno. Haven't given it much thought.

The effects of geniuses usually transcend their field. How many have done that in hip-hop period? We had this discussion about who would be considered the Elvis Presley of hip-hop in terms of a transcendent figure not just race so this ain't about Eminem.

Kanye is or was a talented hip-hop producer and halfway decent rapper at times with a hot line here and there. Great hot songs he has produced. Genius? Come on now.

Great or genius publicity hound or celebrity attention whore? He might be a genius when it comes to that. Yeah I'll give you that.

 Jay hoped on Ye's back to revitalize his career.

I guess I have to run you old niggas out the building to get my point across

Kanye West's 50 Best Beats for Other Artists/

 My nigga "Guess Who's Back" etc. that nigga ran that era. You my not be a hip-hop head like me but he produced ALOT of muthfuking songs that were good along with being one of the top artist. Give the nigga his dues.

 Dude Kanye has been touring internationally since his Glow And The Dark Tour.
Google that.

What year were you born?

I'm old school. I'm not in my 20s. Good music is good music and it's timeless. It will always get props. We have discussed this many times. Very little modern hip-hop or R&B can be considered timeless classics. Doesn't mean there aren't great songs being made. There are. But I don't dismiss new music or old music. Side by side comparisons reveal true greatness.

Hiding behind age or generations is a smoke screen. The music has to stand on it's own merits. Age is not a convenient excuse. In other words that has nothing to do with anything. Has music improved as a whole since the 70s 80s or 90s? Truthfully?

Age is irrelevant.
