Official Chicago Bears Off-Season Thread

This dude's next cut should be his roster spot; maybe this will wake him the fuck up:

http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-77078198/

J'Marcus Webb lost his starting spot on the offensive line last week — and a pay cut came with it.
The Bears have reduced Webb’s base salary, but he has the opportunity to earn all of the money back through playing-time incentives.

A source with knowledge of the new deal told the Tribune that Webb’s base salary has been slashed from $1.323 million to the minimum for a fourth-year player — $630,000. That represents a savings of $693,000 for the Bears against the salary cap right away. With a tight cap, the Bears likely needed the relief with cornerback Kelvin Hayden going on injured reserve and defensive end Turk McBride receiving an injury settlement.

The move frees up cap space for the Bears immediately and slots Webb at a more appropriate pay level if he is a backup this season now that he has been relegated to the second team. Webb had to agree to take a pay cut. It is possible the Bears advised him he would be released if he did not. He’s still not a lock for the roster.

The Bears appear likely to use fifth-round draft pick Jordan Mills as the starting right tackle, which would leave Webb in a battle with Jonathan Scott for the swing tackle position. Scott has practiced only once since July 31 because of pain in his right knee, but he had it drained a week ago and the hope is he will be back on the field this week. If Scott is healthy, he could push Webb out the door, making the salary reduction a moot point.

Scott started five games at right tackle last season and is a respected veteran. Webb, who has started 44 games over the previous three seasons, does not have the same cachet in the locker room. But if Scott isn’t ready to go, the Bears will have little choice but to keep Webb. At least now he comes at a discounted price unless he works his way back onto the field.

I know its preseason but so far the BEARS O-Line
looked good

I like the play design and play calls from Trestman

DA BEARS

How's the D looking?

D-Line, LBs and Secondary lookin good
so far

D-Line getting decent pressure on raiders o-line

Tim Jennings just got an INT
he read the route better than the Raiders WR

Its only preseason but I am diggin the different
formations and play calling by Trestman

HOLY SHIT THE BEARS O-LINE
is actually blocking

so is that what an offensive line actually look like

Cant see the game right now....but based off the stats on NFL.com.....the Bears are doing much better on offense (minus Marshall). Dont know how the defense and OL are doing.

BM had a few uncharacteristic drops, I think he may have one catch...Alshon's had a real nice game. Like others have said, the OL has looked good man

The back ups tryna piss the game away right now though. Raiders just scored, its about to be 27-20
:smh:

the first team was killin the Raiders in the 1st half
but the backups 2nd and 3rd string players
been sucking ass in the 2nd half
cutting down the team from 75 to 53 might be easy
this preseason

its official backup QB McCown is str8 garbage
Rex Grossman has a better arm than him. That muhfukka lame
cant throw the ball vertical to save his life

I am not a raiders fan but it is easy to see that Terrelle Pryor
is the starting QB, Bears 1st string defense
made Flynn look like shit

Bears | Brandon Marshall still bothered by hip

Tue, 27 Aug 2013 19:36:03 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall (hip) said Tuesday, Aug. 27, that he is still isn't feeling comfortable seven months after hip surgery. "It's one of those things where I'm just trying to get healthy for Week 1," Marshall said. "So you've got to have a game plan coming off surgery, a third hip surgery. So yeah, I'm not where I want to be right now. It's a little frustrating. But we'll see."

Fantasy Tip: This isn't the kind of thing fantasy owners want to necessarily hear less than two weeks before the regular season. However, it doesn't sound serious enough to keep Marshall from missing time, but he could be nagged by minor pain during the season. And since he has had three hip surgeries, it is always an area of concern.

Less than elite 'unacceptable' to Marshall
By Michael C. Wright

Brandon Marshall and his agent, Kennard McGuire, summed up my suspicions about the receiver’s recent revelations of frustration with his recovery process and the indication the organization might be rushing him back from offseason hip surgery before he’s fully ready.

“Brandon is accustomed to executing and playing at a high level, and being the perfectionist that he is, his expectations of himself are very high,” McGuire told ESPN. “Anything less than elite is unacceptable to him.”

A day after Marshall expressed concern that he “may be [being] rushed a little bit, and some people might think I need to be farther on than where I am,” the receiver missed practice to attend to a personal matter, which according to a source was an examination on the hip that was scheduled in January just after the surgery was performed.

Marshall explained the situation Wednesday to ESPN.com as “just that eight years in the NFL coming off these surgeries, and it’s been frustrating trying to get back to 100 percent,” adding “I woke up a couple days really sore when camp first started. I’m really much better now, but it’s not where you want to be at this time, which has been a little frustrating. From an ability standpoint, I’m right where I need to be. I’m not at midseason form, but that’s OK.”

But really for Marshall, it isn’t.

As one of the game’s elite players, Marshall wants to replicate his record-setting production of 2012 (118 catches for 1,508 yards) in 2013 or surpass it. At this point, his body isn’t in the right place physically for him to do that. A lack of conditioning from all the days off given by the coaching staff is a part of it. The truth of the matter, however, is that Marshall probably wants even more time off for his hip to sufficiently heal.

New Bears coach Marc Trestman isn’t like former coach Lovie Smith, who routinely gave veteran players days off to keep their bodies fresh. Trestman wants all his players constantly working. But such an approach might not be conducive to Marshall’s healing process. Remember, he's coming off his third hip surgery.

Although Marshall looked perfectly fine throughout training camp and in preseason games, he often said how he felt physically belied the appearance on the field. At the time, it seemed Marshall might have been overexaggerating, but it’s apparent now that he wasn’t.

Does Marshall feel better than he did at the start of camp? Yes. Is this a major issue that will keep him out of the regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals? Absolutely not.

That’s why quarterback Jay Cutler brushed off any suggestion of that by saying Marshall will “snap out of it, and he’ll be the guy we need next week. He knows where he needs to be.” Which for Marshall is as the elite receiver he’s been for the majority of his NFL career.

Since 2006, Marshall ranks No. 4 in the NFL in receptions (612) and is one of just two receivers to catch 80 balls or more in each of the past six seasons. You don’t put up those numbers unless you’re elite.

Right now, because of the hip, Marshall doesn’t feel that way, but he told ESPN.com, “My hip’s gonna be great," because eventually, he'll get there.

“As far as him not being there [at practice Wednesday], this has been planned with the Bears and Brandon long before yesterday,” McGuire said. “Any other suggestion, thought or implication are all unfair to Brandon and the Bears organization.”

To put things into perspective J.Webb wasn't
the best Offensive lineman but for 3 years,
he was the best that the BEARS could get as
a decent O.Lineman.

I hate beating a dead horse but Angelo was the worst GM
and hired a shitty ass talent scout team.

Gay-angelo drafted for Chris Williams and Cabe Carimi
in the 1st rd; in which, they couldn't beat out J.Webb
for the starting position. And not to mention the
7 dreadful free agent acquisitions in that time frame
for offensive lineman. :smh:

Many people, including myself, shitted on J.Webb but
he was the best tackle the bears could get. I give him
props to be in a no win situation. I wish him well but
the BEARs need to improve and I think Emery/Trestman
are doing it. Only except at the QB position, if Cutler goes
down McCown is the backup, Bears would be in for a long season.
