Black twitter: social revolution in the making

Lol...you keep bringing up what's on someone's feed and people keep telling you they aren't even following most of these people

Personally I think twitter is a powerful tool...just on a seo standpoint...and if I'm following a breaking story twitter is a great place to get up to the minute updates...I also like to check out twitter to get a feel of what topics are trending and what people are taking about

But black twitter? Most of the most ignant but funny shit is created by them...for every 1 trayvon Martin topic there are 3 more ignorant silly ones...I remember when I first started getting on twitter to test it's functionality (I work with and study social media)....I would go in on the trending topics and most of my retweets were the silly ones

I see the opportunity you all speak of utilizing it however you can't ignore the majority of its current function...which makes it an uphill battle

Agree with the red.

Now ask yourself why is it that sport personalities and comedians are seen as the voice of black america.

Not that I agree, but you cannot deny the impact of their words.

Similarly, clowning around and cracking jokes has a component of attention and people in this culture love attention.

With a growing following comes power, the power of influence.

Same stuff that Harry Belafonte is about.

1. That shit has a runtime of damn near 45 minutes, the 10 minutes I gave was charity.

2. I think you need to do some reading my friend.
You chose not to engage in the content because you don't want to gain any information? You have time for 9000 posts on BGOL but can't find 35 more minutes to watch a documentary on shit that's going on today and how it affects you? :smh: How much time have you spent on BGOL just today?

Waving buh-bye to you as the world leaves you behind as you remain steadfast in the past.

It's like an old man trying to understand new slang.

I respect what you're saying. I just wouldn't label yourself or anything respectable going on as "Black Twitter".

Yes it is black people (mostly) but Black twitter is clearly defined to the people who know what it is and there is a family tree. Again clearly defined.

It's hilarious to be connected there and to come here and read this :lol::lol:

Bbillions is a part of black twitter as well. Nerdatthecooltable as well.

No pissing contest, lol. You think we're talking about something broad or you're confused and don't comprehend what I'm telling you. It isn't the same thing.

Technology is awesome, and twitter is excellent as a news/communication device but it's also corny group think and a false adrenalin boost for those who are conceited or shallow in need of attention.

if it werent for social media, zimmerman wldnt even gottn charged.

2013 and yall are this foolish about the impact of technology.

fuck this powerdrill, i like twisting screws by hand.

So what if he was charged, the end result was the same.

Technology CAN be powerful, but it's only as good as it's user. I tell my wife this all the time, if we ever achieved time travel people would mostly use it to go back and watch their favorite TV shows.

Edit Ain't even worth it.... Believe whatever you want.

man that guy would just pretend that the Arab Spring didn't happen

Anyway, he has a history of negativity when it comes to black people.

What the hell do you think is the strength of social media? NUMBERS!

Dude, we're closer to the Jetsons that we are the Flintstones.

What's more effective? A thousand people marching on a building's doorstep or 50,000 people tweeting/posting to every digital platform they are protesting against?

What's more effective, relying on the local news to report your march and air in on the local news and in the newspaper or having every news organization, blog, etc, post/retweet all of the content being posted on social media from the thousands of people posting about in online?

You don't think the Black Panthers of the 60s wouldn't be all over social media today? They would understand the power of that digital tool in their hands. Social media is media and it lays in the hand of the user. Media has dictated this country's entire history and now you have the power you dismiss it because you don't understand it. :smh:

You skipped all over the ACTION part to get to the numbers. :smh:

You think Obama got elected solely because of social media? I guarantee if he didn't visit almost every state he would not have gotten elected.

Social media played a HUGE part, no doubt, but nothing replaces boots on the ground. It's the ultimate. That's why it's the last resort in wars these days.

1,000 people on a doorstep versus 50k tweets? Imma go with the doorstep. Tweets can be erased and forgotten as soon as the new Nicki Minaj album comes out. Humans on a doorstep cannot be ignored.

50k tweets all with one hashtag, or 1000 people gathered in an area... which would get more attention? Trust me, the news media would be all over 1000 people in any one location, versus 50k tweets that could be from robots.

The easier the response is, the more of it you need, and vice versa. You need tweets in the six figures to equal the power of a few thousand pairs of feet. 1M tweets, or a 1M man march, which has more power?

Just like nothing will beat the power of cash, nothing beats the power of feet and actual physical action.

Point out the negativity my brotha. Post the threads that have this so called 'history'. Call me out. I fuckin dare you.

That's how you phony ass niggas operate. When your ideas are challenged and you have ZERO credible response you go to the 'he must be white' defense. I could be purple and your ideas are still bullshit.

Like I said, post my history or shut the fuck up.

I'm still surprised at some people's thinking when it comes to digital. I do this shit for a living and I constantly have to knock clients over the head to try to make them understand how powerful of a tool they have at their disposal. They refuse to believe it's more than just a bunch of people taking selfies and picts of their food.

yea specially w/ small businesses.

that's the general perception and the biggest hurdle. well that and there's not always a immediate ROI and old school business folks see everything as "what's the immediate impact on my bottom line". business is way more complicated and nuanced now and lot of folks just dont get it.

but in a yr or 2, a business (or white collar job candidate) without a strong social media presence is gonna look slow and old just like a business without a website looks today.

I can see a business, but why would you say that about an individual? Seems like it would be more of a liability to be heavy on social media due to how they use it to investigate candidates before the initial interview. UNLESS that is the type of job they are going for (one that is social media related).

obama would not have won the election without social media. period.

we ALL know how important boots on the ground are but if u look thru this thread alot of people are doubting the importance of the social internet. thats the point. its more important than what some are giving it credit for.

nah more and more, recruiters and hiring managers are looking at ur social media presence to get a feel for what ur like and how connected u are to their mission/industry.

and eventually having no presence at all is gonna look like not having an email address.

Exactly.

Digital is or can be woven into damn near every fabric of society. It's a free tool that is easily accessible to all. If you have zero familiarity with this massive platform and how it's used, especially in business, what value do you bring to a business?

You don't have to be an active participant/voice, but you damn well should be aware of it and knowledgable in how to use it as a participant or a consumer.

Is it just me or wouldn't black twitter be a whole new social network, designed, coded and ran by, um I don't know, black people?

well myspace was a direct ripof of blackplanet.
they rarely talk about it but there are a few interviews floating around where they openly discuss blackplanet being the model behind myspace.

the founder, omar wasow should be known as the godfather of social media. things dont always go as they should tho...

But I will oblige you for 2 mins and post your shit

Soooooo....why are there more black people in jail than white people? Even proponents of the "blacks commit more crimes on a percentage basis than whites theory" don't have an answer to that question.

agreed.

so why would we send love out to them when we get none in return don't make sense does it?

i don't understand it.

love us and show love back to us

let everything else figure itself out

empathy towards a group that is actively hunting our men and children

actively dissing our women and trying to hold them to standards of beauty that isn't meant for them?

actively passing laws to fuck us up

actively trying to shame us actively trying to control our very speech?... and ONLY our speech?

There is no "us".

I see, if you are smart, you'll know exactly how to use it and reap the benefit. I'm not into it, BUT I see the value in business, as it can drive you to a call to action (purchasing an item, going to see a movie, test driving a car, etc.) I would get people who know how to effective use it to work for me to build a brand if I had one.

I asked someone if they knew about "black Twitter," someone WAY more into social media than myself, they heard about it but regarded it as a passing fad.

I understand your sentiment though, to be connected with visionaries who inspire and lead (like the OLD Cornell West used to be before he became the posterboy for Haterade, along with his sidekick Tavis) and do things day by day, week by week and see the changes made and the betterment of society is hugely infectious.

Honestly I think social media could have been like that if it existed in the 80's, with real music leaders like Run DMC, Michael Jackson (We Are the World), Janet Jackson (Rhythm Nation 1814), Quincy Jones, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, etc. Also real sports and entertainment leaders like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Bill Cosby, and all the other stars you could see posted on the walls of schools all across the country who emphasized reading and uplifting us as a whole.

However, it seems like the real people who are practicing what they preach are the unsung heroes who don't get shouted out nearly enough, and the only time things make it mainstream is when there is a tragedy.

Exactly. Twitter and other social media is a must for any business. Think about it, a free platform with millions of people on it 24/7. Social media is available via phone, tablet, computer, and even some TVs. That breath gives you access to millions of prospects and customers at all times. You can build your brand's awareness via it. From their build up affinity. And then close out with an action – as you mentioned, a call-to-action (visit this site, follow us on here, buy this product, share with a friend, etc.).

Say what you will on a personal level, but professionally, if you aren't using social media, you're a fool. It's a game changer and needle-mover.
