Chauncey Billups Seeks Front Office Role After Playing Career
Jun 10, 2013 5:23 AM EDT

MIAMI – In the twilight of a 16-year NBA career, Chauncey Billups believes that he would be successful as a head coach after he finishes playing, but he has instead always focused on becoming part of an organization’s front office.

“My desire was never to coach, but it’s funny because I’m actually coaching as I’m playing now,” Billups said Sunday night in a room inside American Airlines Arena. “Do I think that I could probably be a good coach because of my experiences? Of course, of course. I know how to handle different egos. I know how to manage guys’ expectations.

“I could be good, but my desire has always been a front office, president or GM role; [to] put the team together.”

Billups, 36, said in the Los Angeles Clippers’ exit interviews that he will spend the offseason continuing to improve his health and prepare for next season.

“As my career winds down, I’ll be open to anything,” Billups said. “I’d be best served in the front office.”

Saunders Unsure Of Kirilenko's Free Agency Plans
Jun 10, 2013 3:15 PM EDT

Andre Kirilenko needs to decide days before July 1 whether he will exercise next season on his contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves or opt for free agency.

Flip Saunders is not sure of Kirilenko's plans.

“We don’t have a gut feel,” Saunders said of Kirilenko’s plans. “It’s a lot of money, at $10 million, to say you’re going to opt out of it. But anything can happen. You know how that goes.”

Kirilenko averaged 12.4 points an 5.7 rebounds in 64 games this season.

Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

An argument could be made that Duke's Seth Curry, the younger brother of Golden State's Stephen Curry and son of former NBA 3-point great Del Curry, is the best shooter in the draft. The only issue is that Curry is an extreme longshot to be selected in the first round this June, and may not even get drafted.

Who, then, is the draft's premier shooter?

The popular answer is one of two players: Lehigh senior C.J. McCollum or Kansas freshman Ben McLemore. While McLemore has the size advantage and athletic edge on McCollum, it's McCollum who has the longer track record of being an elite shooter and scorer. Both are expected to be high-to-mid lottery picks later this month.

Today, ESPN's panel of five experts were asked about the top shooter in the draft, and you can click on the story below to read what they had to say: (hint: McCollum and McLemore each received two votes, while Curry had one) By Joe Kaiser

Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

Dallas reportedly wants no part of its first round pick, and that is understandable. The Mavericks haven't had a lottery pick since 2000, and have drafted higher than No. 26 only once (Byron Mullens, No. 24, in 2009) during that span.

While draft day is a big deal for most teams, it isn't as much for Dallas, which has built its team through trades and free agency -- not the draft -- since it acquired Dirk Nowitzki on draft day 15 years ago. The latest rumors have the Mavs shopping veteran Shawn Marion.

Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio reports that sources indicate Dallas recently offered Marion in a deal to Cleveland, but was turned down. The deal, per Amico, would have sent Mavs pick (No. 13) 13th pick and Marion to the Cavs for the Cleveland's two second-round selections (Nos. 31 and 33) and a 2014 pick.

Marion enters the final year of his current deal in 2013-14 and is owed $9.31 million. What other team might be interested in pulling off such a trade with the Mavs, bringing in Marion and the No. 13 pick in return for future picks? Perhaps Detroit. The young nucleus would get the benefit of a positive veteran presence in Marion to fill in at the 3, and could use their No. 7 and the acquired No. 13 picks to bolster the backcourt with a point guard (Michael Carter-Williams, Shane Larkin, C.J. McCollum or Dennis Shroeder) and a scoring wing (Shabazz Muhammad, Tim Hardaway Jr., Kentavious Caldwell Pope, Glen Rice Jr.). The Mavs would shed Marion's contract with the hope of also landing a decent pick down the road.

Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

It's no secret that Cleveland is quite interested in Nerlens Noel; Kentucky's shot-blocking freshman big man could very be the first player to hear his name called on draft night. The Cavs have also been linked to Georgetown sophomore swingman Otto Porter for much of the last month. But what about other names Cleveland is interested in?

Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio writes today that the Cavs, which also have pick No. 19 in the first round, are interested in Maryland center Alex Len, Syracuse's rangy point guard Michael Carter-Williams, as well as two swingmen: Georgia's Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and North Carolina's Reggie Bullock.

Amico also writes that the Cavs have shown interest in Nigerians small forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and Virginia Tech's high-scoring point guard Erick Green with their second round picks (No. 31 and 33 overall).

One way or another, expect Mike Brown to have a lot of young talent joining Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, Tristan Thompson and Anderson Varejao on his roster next season.

Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

As of Monday, the Cleveland Cavaliers have made no decision regarding the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Most mock drafts, including the one by ESPN.com's Chad Ford, has them taking Kentucky's Nerlens Noel. Other options include Georgetown's Otto Porter and Kansas' Ben McLemore.

From Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio: "The Cavs appear to be intrigued not just by McLemore’s remarkable perimeter touch, but his explosiveness near the basket. Like most evaluators, they believe he can turn into a bona fide scoring whiz at the next level."

The Cavs top need is to upgrade the small forward position and if they don't take Porter, they may consider going after Danny Granger, according to Amico. Granger missed all but five games this season due to knee issues and that could deter possible trades. Pacers head coach Frank Vogel has said Granger, making $14 million next season, will keep his starting position going into training camp. Granger's current deal expires in 2014.

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert wants the team back in the playoffs next season and he has probably told general manager Chris Grant to go for a major deal to make it happen. Granger would be that type of a trade.

Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

The Houston Rockets are once again going to swing for the fences this offseason when it comes to targeting the top free agents. There have been several reports linking the Rockets and Dwight Howard and Sunday Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle noted that the team also has plans to go after Chris Paul, too.

“They are targets No. 1 and 1A," a source told Feigen.

The Rockets may go after both Howard and Paul, however they don't have enough salary cap room, unless they trade a few players -- Omer Asik, Thomas Robinson or Jeremy Lin -- and if the top two 2013 free agents agree to take less than the max deals they are eligible to sign. At this time Howard is a realistic possibility of leaving the Los Angeles Lakers, but getting Paul to say goodbye to the Los Angeles Clippers is a major long-shot.

Popovich: Spurs To Remain On Course, Unlikely To Make Significant Changes To Roster
Jun 22, 2013 9:17 PM EDT

The San Antonio Spurs are unlikely to make significant changes to their roster after losing Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

“People have been telling us we need to get younger 15 years ago,” Gregg Popovich said. “At one point I guess we will be too old. Who knows when that is? Going to the conference finals last year and the Finals this year proves something is going right. I think we’ll just stay on course with the way we do things.”

Popovich is confident the Spurs will be motivated to contend again next season.

“(This year) reminded me, and Timmy (Duncan) and Tony (Parker) and Manu (Ginobili) again, we forgot how hard it is to get there,” he said. “It took forever to play all those games. So that was a big revelation for us. We just whipped through it in the past. This year, it was like, ‘My gosh, did we really do this four times?’

“So why not try to do it again? That’s what we’re here for. We will or we won’t, but we’ll certainly give it our best effort.”

Clippers Start Contract Negotiations With Scott, Shaw
Jun 23, 2013 1:48 AM EDT

The Los Angeles Clippers have started contract discussions with both Byron Scott and Brian Shaw, and talks with Scott are ongoing.

"They are getting there," an NBA executive said. "But they are still talking."

The Clippers have also interviewed Lionel Hollins for their head coach opening, but the two sides have not discussed a contract.

The Clippers are still holding out hope that they can land Doc Rivers from the Boston Celtics.

"The Clippers haven't identified a final candidate," an executive said.

The NBA is ALLOWING the Cavs to get #1 picks every year because they know that they fucked up by ALLOWING Miami to stack a team. A la when they allowed the Lakers to get Paul in that bs trade with Memphis.

I find it funny how you all think the draft is fixed but the playoffs aint. Interesting.

Kevin Durant Officially Signs With Jay-Z's Agency
Jun 24, 2013 3:47 PM EDT

Kevin Durant announced he has officially signed with Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports agency.

Durant left Landmark Sports earlier this month.

"Grateful for the opportunity with Roc Nation Sports. It's go time," Durant said in a statement posted with a picture of him and Jay-Z officially signing together.

"He has a 90.5 free throw shooting rate, the youngest player in NBA history to join the 50-40-90 club, a giving individual and a legend in the making. What more can I say?" Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter added.

Durant has three seasons left on his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

So Carl Landry unexpectedly opts out and is looking for a bigger contract. So along with Jack the Warriors will likely lose Landry as well.

Also in very surprising news. Deng and the Bulls are working on a contract extension. If this happens looks like the Bulls will not have cap space for the summer of 2014. This is shocking to me.

Paul Pierce is being shopped heavily. Draft Night will be the night he can be moved without Boston having to take back anything.

Also Boston is looking to sign and trade for Josh Smith:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Nets are trying to move Marshon Brooks desperately. Timberwolves look to be the team of choice.

Honestly how much money does Landry think he is going to get?

I'm not even sure he gets the MLE, I'd rather Milsap over him if we are talking undersized power forwards as well as David West obviously in the free agent market

At least the Warriors got Curry locked up for the low relative to how good he is

Bulls ain't getting nothing in 2014 along with my Mavs anyway so minus whale start using some of the space

Pierce being shopped heavy but Mavs are getting calls for Marion as well, problem is he has until Friday to opt in so that hurts the chances of us dumping his salary he could fuck over the team we trade him to the next day

Josh Smith and shit and is about to get overpaid

So basically Boston wants to start 2 tweeners at the forward spot in Green and Smith?

Danny Ainge don't know what the Hell he doing

I'll take Brooks in Dallas

As for the Bulls this move confused the fuck out of me. You extend Deng and you basically say the team you have now will be the team you have for a while. Re: ~**~**~**~ 2013 NBA Offseason and Draft Thread~**~**~

Shit yea....Greg Oden and Samuel Dalembert both expressed interest playing for the Heat. Those two healthy in South Beach would be nasty.

Before playing the Miami Heat, Milwaukee’s Samuel Dalembert talks up signing with the Heat

SDtop42213.jpg

Milwaukee Bucks reserve center Samuel Dalembert is not some team-killing cancer, musing openly about his future beyond 2012-13 on full record with reporters. He’s just an open, candid, honest guy when it comes to discussing the life of a moderately priced journeyman NBA reserve.

Still, we don’t recall too many instances where one of those reserves has gone record to discuss signing with an opponent while he plays that opponent in the first round of a playoff series. This is exactly where Samuel went before Sunday evening’s Game 1 showdown between the Bucks and Miami Heat, as FOX Sports’ Chris Tommasson talked to Sam about his very specific thoughts on his upcoming free agency:

"The Heat will be definitely an option," Dalembert told FOX Sports Florida before his Bucks lost to the Heat 110-87 in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference first-round series Sunday night at AmericanAirlines Arena. "It’s up to them and seeing what’s going to be out there. But at this point you want to be with a contending team. You don’t want to go backwards, so you want to chase that promised land."

[…]

"I’d look at the mid-level, whatever’s going to be out there," Dalembert said. "If it is a real contending team, we’ll have no problem. So we’ll see."

That’s a new one. It’s rare enough for players to discuss free agency in terms that rise above the typically vague and bland. It’s even rarer for players to point to specific teams before the season even ends. To talk up the Heat just minutes after playing against the Heat? That’s pretty unprecedented.

Of course, Dalembert didn’t play against the Heat on Sunday. He’s played just six minutes of action since the end of March, and while he remains a talented big man that can defend and score off of broken plays (remember, this guy is just 2 1/2 months removed from dropping 35 points on the Denver Nuggets), the Bucks were not pleased with Dalembert’s conditioning to start the season, and even suspended him for one game earlier in the year for an unnamed violation.

Still, anyone criticizing Dalembert for answering honestly would be perpetuating the NBA’s unfair double-standard.

Teams are allowed to treat players as assets, as tradable commodities often valued for their ability to land other players in an upcoming deal, or come off the salary cap once their contract expires. Dalembert discussed a contract with the Heat before the 2011-12 season before signing a two-year deal for an average salary with the Houston Rockets. Houston has long been in the asset-moving department, and the team dealt Dalembert to Milwaukee over the summer to clear cap space just for a chance to potentially swing a deal for a superstar. That’s not a criticism of Houston’s move involving Samuel, as they’re one of 30 teams that make these moves routinely.

The Bucks can moan about Dalembert talking up other teams, but they’re also one of 30 teams that are allowed to cut, bench, or trade players like Dalembert with relative ease any time the NBA deems it legal. If teams can be so brash when initiating player movement, I think it only fair that players are allowed to be as frank when it comes to their own future.

(Maybe not the opposing team before a playoff game, though.)

To Dalembert’s credit, recently he’s been calm and respectful in talking about the team that has pulled him in and out of the lineup all year. Sam is currently on the “out” portion of that run, as youngsters Larry Sanders, John Henson, and Epke Udoh are rightfully being awarded minutes to aid in their development. From Tomasson’s report:

"It’s been a very interesting season," Dalembert said. "Things change. Suddenly, there is no explanation (about his minutes cut). It’s basically a business. So that was my first year of DNP (did not play due to coach’s decision) in my career and not only one or two. I don’t know how many. I lost track.

"But, for the most part, we’re supporting each other and the young guys are getting a chance like John Henson and Larry is stepping it up real big this year and what Ekpe is doing. So I support the guys and then I try to pass the knowledge you got and then waiting for the resurrection (of his career)."

Greg Oden's agent says there is mutual interest with Miami Heat

62113_Oden.jpg

Could Greg Oden join the Heat and bolster their interior? (USATSI)
The Miami Heat just won the 2013 NBA title thanks to a lot of small ball. With power forward Chris Bosh playing the majority of the minutes at center this season, the Heat called upon their players to play a lot bigger than their normal positions would typically ask of them. It worked, thanks to Bosh's acceptance of his uncomfortable role and LeBron James being able to guard just about any position you throw in front of him.

But with the Indiana Pacers proving to be a formidable foe, the Chicago Bulls getting their star point guard back (which should allow their frontcourt to be a lot more imposing), and countless teams in the Western Conference capable of throwing big lineups out there, the Heat should probably look into a couple of center options to bring in just in case they need to match size for size. According to FoxSportsFlorida.com, there could be mutual respect between former No. 1 pick Greg Oden and the Heat's front office.

Oden's agent, Mike Conley, told FOX Sports Florida by phone Friday that the free-agent center remains very interested in signing with the Heat this summer and the feeling is mutual. Conley expects to talk with Heat president Pat Riley when free agency begins July 1 about the 7-foot Oden, the 2007 No. 1 draft pick who hasn't played in the NBA since December 2009 due to knee problems.

"The Heat need some size, that's not a secret," Conley said. "Whether it's in a backup role or whatever, he could help them. I know they're interested in him and he's interested in them."

If Greg Oden has no problem taking a very small contract to join the Heat, this has a great possibility of happening. Miami is way over the luxury tax apron and doesn't have flexibility in bringing in new players at a decent price. The Heat can pretty much stick with the status quo in terms of their roster or they can look into moving Dwyane Wade or Bosh to get more roster flexibility. It seems unlikely they'd break up a team capable of winning three straight titles, so bringing in Oden for a veteran's minimum contract for maybe a couple of guaranteed years might be the only risk they can take in seeing what Oden has left, if anything.

Oden hasn't played since the 2009-10 season when he averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in just 23.9 minutes. He's had numerous knee injuries to completely derail his career, going from the next big thing to a draft bust because of injury issues. He's only 25 years old.

Yea, that's why I said the Pacers will force the Heat's hand to get better.
He's a better Birdman, but you may have Chris Anderson as the backup center.
The depth chart could look like this, assuming no one is traded...

Chalmers/Cole
Wade/Allen/Miller
James/Battier/Lewis
Bosh/Haslem
Dalembert/Anderson

non dress

Jones/Oden

What do you think?
