Bears | Jay Cutler and Mike Tice had ugly relationship

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 10:20:53 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler and offensive coordinator Mike Tice were on such bad terms last season that QB Josh McCown had to act as a liason between the two. Tice is no longer with the team. "I was just talking to McCown this morning and one of the things we said is it's so cool to come to work where it's not one of those things where it's dreadful," WR Brandon Marshall said this week.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler's bad attitude has gotten in the way of his pure talent before. With a coaching staff that should cater to his needs, Cutler could be in line for a fine season with the best receiving options he's had at his disposal since coming to Chicago. It isn't wise to count on him for anything more than a capable backup option, however.

Bears | JaMarcus Russell looks good during workout

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 16:43:09 -0700

Free-agent QB JaMarcus Russell (Raiders) looked good during his workout for the Chicago Bears Friday, June 7, but the team is unlikely to sign him to a deal. A league source said Russell showed a "big arm" and a "good positive demeanor" but also showed a bit of rust with timing and accuracy of his throws. The Bears already have three quarterbacks on roster in QBs Jay Cutler, Josh McCown and Matt Blanchard.

Fantasy Tip: Russell has worked himself back into good shape, but that alone doesn't mean a team will give him a chance. He won't be a fantasy option this year even if he signs with an organization.

Im kinda shocked that they gave up on GC, this being only his third season. I was hoping they'd give him at least one more to make something of himself, but it seems like we have better options at both tackle spots on the roster at this point, and G too....

Another first round pick gone :smh:

At first it is shocking that a team would give up on a 1st round offensive lineman after only 2 years, then I realized who made the pick. If the Offensive Line isn't better this year, it wont because of a lack of attentiveness to it. I was hoping that Gabe would get a chance to prove himself but I guess the new coaches saw he wasnt a good fit. No need to draw it out, get rid of him and keep moving forward. I can applaud that logic. I do wish him the best. I'm surprised they got anything for him since he has been injured so much.

Here is a quick comparison of the offensive lineman in 2011 (Angelo's last year as GM) and 2013 (mock)

2011
Position/Player Status
LT-J'Marcus Webb On Team
LG-Chris Williams Rams
C-Roberto Garza On Team
RG-Lance Louis Dolphins
RT-Gabe Carimi Buccaneers

2013
Position/Player Status
LT-Jermon Bushrod
LG-Kyle Long
C-Roberto Garza
RG-Matt Slauson
RT-J'Marcus Webb

Put another one on the chopping block!!!

Bennett's quest: Be among league's best

Bears tight end wants strong rapport with Cutler

By Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune reporter

7:16 PM CDT, June 12, 2013

Tight end Martellus Bennett was running down the seam full speed Tuesday, and it only looked as if the defensive back covering him was half his size.

Quarterback Jay Cutler fired the ball, and at the last instant the 6-foot-6, 265-pound Bennett turned over his back-side (right) shoulder and snatched the pass out of the air for a 20-yard gain. It was the kind of pass that would have bounced off Kellen Davis' hands. Or the kind of play former Bears tight end Greg Olsen would have made.

Olsen told the Charlotte Observer this week, "I wouldn't trade myself for anybody" when talking about a list of the NFL's premier tight ends and where he stacks up. The Bears dealt Olsen to the Panthers in 2011 for a third-round pick, one that was used as part of the trade for Brandon Marshall last year.

Bennett would like to see himself in that conversation about the league's best tight ends but has more to prove after a breakout season a year ago with the Giants (55 receptions for 626 yards and five touchdowns).Escaping Dallas, Bennett finally got out of the long shadow cast by Jason Witten, who led all NFL tight ends with 110 catches last season.

Bennett doesn't have to lead the league to make a serious impact for the Bears, who over the last two seasons have gotten fewer receptions from tight ends than any team in the NFL.

"I appreciate Witten more than I did when I was there," Bennett said. "I believe (I can put up statistics like him). I think I am up there with the top tight ends in the NFL with the way I have been playing and the way I have been growing and working. I think I can put up big numbers."

The Cowboys drafted Bennett in the second round in 2008, and if the eventual plan was to have him replace Witten, well, the mainstay was locked in. Witten's presence did motivate Bennett to hone his craft as a blocker, and that makes him a more complete player. Olsen might be more of a natural receiver, but Bennett can do it all.

"The only thing I wanted to do (with Dallas) was get in front of Witten," Bennett said. "That's hard to do. The guy is a great player. The way he came to work and a lot of things he did that I do now in my details and the way I approach the game as well, it helped."

Cutler appreciates that the Bears added a dynamic tight end, giving him a target that can occupy the middle of the field so the offense doesn't have to rely solely on Marshall filling that need..

"The thing about him is he wants to be great," Cutler said. "He doesn't want to be good. So every day he comes out here working. He's always asking us what he can do better, how he can improve. He's a rare breed. He's able to block, he's able to run. He's got a really good feel in the passing game of zone (and) man. He's fun to work with."

With any luck Bennett can be the kind of constant presence that Witten has been in Dallas. That would provide a great boost for the offense.

"He is one of the best I have seen do it in a long time," Bennett said. "When you're behind a guy, you're kind of hoping maybe he misses a game. He never missed a game when I was there. He has a great rapport with (Tony) Romo, which is what I am trying to do with Cutler."

Aromashodu back in Bears' receiving picture
June 10, 2013|By Brad Biggs | Tribune reporter

The Chicago Bears will have interesting competition for the bottom of the depth chart in training camp and now a familiar face is in the mix at wide receiver.

Devin Aromashodu was re-signed Monday after spending the previous two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He was a popular target at times for quarterback Jay Cutler in 2009 and to a lesser degree in 2010 when he was first with the franchise.

Bears | Want Jay Cutler to get ball out quicker

Fri, 14 Jun 2013 14:14:58 -0700

Chicago Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh said the team wants QB Jay Cutler to throw the ball quicker in order to avoid some sacks. "We've stressed that we want the ball out. There's a rhythm to what we do. He appreciates that, and he knows if he's getting the ball out he's not getting hit. We're all involved in it and everybody is responsible for it. Since we said Day 1 that's our No. 1 goal, we've got to live up to it and make sure we are not holding onto the ball forever," Cavanaugh said.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has been sacked 148 times over the last four seasons, and the team thinks Cutler can avoid some sacks if he does not hold onto the ball. He will have some good weapons around him on offense and should have a good understanding of the scheme the team is using. Cutler should be considered a solid No. 2 fantasy quarterback this season.

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) has been limited during offseason workouts, but the team is pleased with how he has worked to get himself in better physical condition. Mentally he's been locked in since we got started," receivers coach Mike Groh said Friday, June 14. I respect what Devin has done for the Bears... The years when the offense couldne move the ball more than 30 yards without a breakdown from the other teams defense, he was instrumental along with a great D to the Bears being successful... But he hasnt progressed as a WR, and ST isnt as big of an impact as it once was with the next kickoff rule... It may be time for him to go to make room for another player.

He never should have been a #2 option at WR; his skill set was suited to the slot but Earl Bennett was a slot only receiver and Aromashdou was not ready for #2 work; that said I think he's only due 1.5 million this season so for that low amount who can you get to replace him as a threat that forces opponents to kick away?

From what I understand the 1.5 mil is his base, but his roster bonus is the question mark. It can be as little as 1 mil, or as much as 9 depending on his play. Realistically the cap hit for him would be around 3mil...

At this point its not about bringing someone else in that will replace his production and threat. He's not gonna be back next season, so give someone else a chance to earn that spot that's going to be here in the future. I don't think the Bears have any gaping holes, I just think it's time to move on from the guys past their usefulness and reload with the next wave of talent.

Chicago Bears RB Michael Bush (shoulder, rib) is fully healed from both rib and shoulder injuries he dealt with last season. His role in the team's offense is undefined this offseason under new offensive coordinator Marc Trestman.

Fantasy Tip: Bush's value last year rested on the laurels of goal-line touches and as the handcuff to Matt Forte. It's unclear if Bush will be the team's go-to goal-line back again, but he'll still be a handcuff option to Forte in deeper leagues.

Bears | Matt Forte thinks he could get more receptions

Wed, 17 Jul 2013 11:53:23 -0700

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte said he believes he could be more involved in the passing game this season under head coach Marc Trestman. "I would expect (to be used more in 2013). Coach Trestman, I think he said he watched a lot of film on me and has seen me run different routes," Forte said. "So we'll get back to catching the ball out of the backfield like we did the prior years."

Fantasy Tip: Forte saw his reception total and receiving yards drop a bit last season but was a solid contributor in the passing game the first four years in the league. Forte probably would be more valuable in point-per-reception leagues if he is more involved in the passing game. Forte should be considered a solid No. 2 running back in all formats.

I can't worry about it. I've been in this league long enough. I've seen guys come and guys go. It will work out the way it's supposed to work out," Cutler said.

Bears | Brandon Marshall hopes TE opens pass game

Wed, 17 Jul 2013 19:09:03 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall said Tuesday, July 16, that he hopes the offseason addition of TE Martellus Bennett will take some of the receiving pressure off him. Marshall had career highs with 118 receptions, 194 targets and 1,508 yards. The Bears receiver with the next highest number of targets was WR Earl Bennett, with 49. Marshall feels the wear and tear might have led to his offseason hip surgery. "I am (looking forward to having more weapons)," Marshall said. "It was tough sledding last year. I think that's why I had to have surgery. I had 2-3 guys on me every single play, but bringing in big boy Martellus, I don't think the league really knows how good he is."

Fantasy Tip: Marshall will still see plenty of targets and receptions, making him a bona fide No. 1 fantasy wide receiver in all formats. Sure, his numbers won't be as high as they were in 2012, but he remains a Top 10 fantasy option at his position.

Bears | Jay Cutler still has much to prove

Tue, 23 Jul 2013 08:16:15 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler likely needs to show more consistency from start to finish, and work well with the new coaching staff and within the new parameters of the new offense to receive a new contract from the team. Cutler feels he is worthy of being paid like one of the best quarterbacks in the game.

Fantasy Tip: For fantasy purposes, Cutler is more of a QB2 who can get you by when your primary option has a difficult matchup or is on a bye. He shouldn't be relied upon as a No. 1 on a regular basis, however.

Bears | Kyle Long viewed more as guard

Tue, 23 Jul 2013 08:19:15 -0700

Chicago Bears OG Kyle Long was drafted to play guard, and the team clearly believes he has more potential at that position than tackle. His arm length is likely the reason for such thinking. Long could see time at tackle sometime down the road, but guard is where he'll spend a majority of his time.

Bears | Three locks at WR, open after that

Tue, 23 Jul 2013 08:18:40 -0700

Chicago Bears WRs Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Earl Bennett are locks for the 53-man roster, but after that it is wide open. WRs Joe Anderson and Eric Weems might lock up a fourth receiver job, and could be battling each other since they are each solid on special teams. WR Devin Aromashodu is in the mix for a job, and then there is seventh-round pick Marquess Wilson and WR Devin Hester, who is more known for his prowess as a return man. The team is likely to keep five receivers plus Hester.

Bears | Brandon Marshall won't be limited

Wed, 24 Jul 2013 15:36:07 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall (hip) expects to have a full workload during training camp, which begins Friday, July 26. WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring), who missed organized team activities in June with a pulled hamstring, is also expected to be fully healthy. "No limitations," Marshall said, "but we're gonna be smart. I'm going on my eighth year, (have) had a few hip surgeries, nothing major. But at the same time, we start playing games in September. So that's what I'm preparing for. It's important to get out there with your teammates, build that chemistry, learn the offense, get reps. But at the same time, if I'm not healthy, all that doesn't matter. So I'm going to listen to my body, and go as it tells me."

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said the team will not agree to contract extensions for any players, including QB Jay Cutler, until after the 2013 season. "I guess if you're saying an enormous amount of leverage (for Cutler) that means we've had a great season," Emery said. "That's a problem I look forward to."

Thanks for the updates

I always thought he was drafted to eventually be moved to OLB so the weight loss doesn't shock me.
