Killing Them Softly

Killing_Them_Softly_poster.jpg

At 97 minutes Killing Them Softly is one of the shortest mob films i have ever seen, but crams in a lot
of colorful characters, stinging and raw dialogue coupled with brutal violence.Scoot McNairy as Frankie and
Ben Mendelsohn as Russell are 2 low level crooks who look like they should be taking showers for a month instead of
robbing an illegal card game run by Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta) at the behest of Johnny Amato (Vincent Curatola)
The robbery leads to hitman Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) being called in to track down and take out anyone that was involved.
KTS interestingly uses the 2008 Presidential election and the economic collapse as a parable to whats
playing out on the gritty streets. Pitt, including Richard Jenkins as Driver, the aforementioned actors, and a handful of other character actors
are great but its James Gandolfini as Mickey a hit man who likes his alchohol and prostitutes but cant stop talking about
his wife who is threatening to leave him is the standout.

Even with its short running time KTS drags a bit but still held my attention and definitely entertains.

Where do I start this is by far one of the best gangster movies in recent memory for me. I love the sheer honesty of this flick and Jackie's line at the end had me co-signing like a mufucka!!! A perfect 10 from me.:dance::dance:Saw the bootleg.

Right on, bro. Gonna aim to see it in the next 2 months. It's been on my radar since the first or second quarter of 2012 and the early publicity.

Enjoyed the hell out of this Charles Laughton joint

Witness for the Prosecution (1957)

Agatha Christie tale of a man on trial for murder: a trial featuring surprise after surprise

You know they talk about Woodstock to no end but this has to be one of the most slept on music festivals ever and this was a good documentary about it.

Soul Power (2008)

A documentary on the legendary soul music concert staged in Kinshasa, Zaire in 1974

- Free tickets for Rust And Bone tomorrow
- Aiming to see Killing Them Softly in the next 2 weeks
- Got my entries in to try and win passes for the adv. screening of Django Unchained later this month. Think the screenings are in around 1 - 1.5 weeks

Warm Bodies was actually better than expected. They mixed zombies with a bit of humor, and a romantic-comedy. People left saying - "Shit, it was better than I expected it to be ..." - enjoyed Skyfall.

What's everyone's take on Craig's films?

Casino Royale / Quantum of Solace / Skyfall?

Like / dislike them, and in what order?

THE HOBBIT

Sitting in the theatre before the film started ,i wondered if i would be able to lose myself in Middle
Earth 9 years after the last journey there written by the imaginitive J. R. R. Tolkien and brilliantly
directed by Peter Jackson and shaped by an extremely talented staff.
Aside from some off putting distractions my question was answered.

The Hobbit takes its time to get going,as i was introduced to a host dwarves and reintroduced to
the clever and brave hobbit Bilbo Baggins briefly portrayed by Ian Holm and gamely portraying a younger
Bilbo Martin Freeman, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and an extremely brief cameo by Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins
The only other fully fleshed out character is Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and they set out on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug

I suspect the trend of a more drawn out story to continue in the next 2 hour plus films,as characters and sequences not found in the book are created to expand
the film.Which have been said to be created for the audiences who love the films so much why not give them 3 films, but others may view this as a way
to line the pockets of the 3 studios backing the film series. If these created sequences include slapstick like moments that are in the Hobbit it may
even turn the biggest fans of the series off .The Hobbit is not as epic as the previous films but it is involving at times and quite thrilling as we are introduced
to trolls, goblins, and a slighlty seen Smaug the dragon. Also an unrelenting villain Azog the Defiler" or "The Pale Orc portrayed by Manu Bennett.
Last but not least Andy Serkis returns as Gollum his scenes with Freeman truly took me back to the time my mother read these stories to me.Can someone
give Serkis an Oscar already?!?

Now on to the controversial 48 frames per second visual method.
The Good: Some scenes turn out stunningly vivid and Jacksons dream of immersing the viewer in the film really works .Some sequences
feel realistic and incredibly exciting .Kind of like watching a live ,elaborate stage production.
The Bad:Some sequences look like a prologue to a medieval video game. Some as if i pushed the fast forward button on my remote,or
one of those History channel re-enactments.
So it was really a mixed bag for me .I would like to see the film in regular 3D or 2D to compare the differences.

In the end Sci -Fi and Fantasy done on such a meticulous and high quality level as this always appeals to me and its hard to resist a trip to
the theatre to see such work on the big screen. So of course i will be there to continue the journey in
The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and There and Back Again (2014)

Good review, Joneblaze.

I'm hoping to win passes for the advance screening of Django Unchained. Got some fam' in town later in the week, and there have been about 5 - 7 local contests for the downtown screening. Hopefully I can score a pair for the show on Thursday (Dec. 20th).

I loved both. I will be buying both on blu ray. Sinister was alot of fun. Iron Fist was some good ass kicking.

I think what worked well in Sinister was the documented footage, and the loud noises/bangs. Like climbing the ladder up to the attic region, and then falling. Plenty of laughs in the theater @ that young police officer who was so awkward and quirky too. Wanting to help/assist Ethan Hawke, etc. We weren't sure if he was a red herring or not, or just a random dude for comedic purposes

yeah i thought the deputy was retarded or something

Yeah - he was a fun character in the flick as he completely lightened the mood for the audience

Looper was pretty dope, right? Won passes to Judge Dredd on a Wednesday, and Looper on the following Monday and took a shorty to them. She dug them both which was cool as she gets down with the sci-if, action, thriller shit so it wasn't wasted on her √ - think it was back in September or so.

Dredd and Looper were two of my favs as well.

Killing them softly is one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Brad pitt's line at the end about Thomas Jefferson had me laughing extra hard in the theatre.

Yeah - they were fun, as you got what you expected. No bullshit - just what the ads, trailers, and reviews were saying √
Dredd was especially the exception. "Loopers" looked good to me in the trailers, but the first trailers of "Dredd" looked like some low budget bullshit. But what I did like in those trailers is that Dredd looked more like he did in the comics (not that blue-eyed Stallone always taking my helmet off crap). I gave it a try and loved it!

how is every other post about you winning passes to XYZ film? What contest are u entering?

Everything, fam'. Contests left & right out this muthafucka. Over here in Canada though ... as for our BGOL'ers in the States ... just hit up the entertainment magazines & sites / newspapers & radio stations in your areas, "sweepstakes" and whatnot ... as ya'll have 10 times the population and way more chances & sponsors out there. As for the movie passes themselves ... they usually (movies) have about 3 - 7 sponsors per flicks ... 250 - 500 seats per theater ... so they usually give away 125 - 250 pairs of passes.

Zero Dark Thirty

Most people thought and said Osama bin Laden's capture or death by the hands of those hunting him would never happen.
In fact the it became the punchline of many comedic routines ........but they still cant find bin Laden......it's easier finding
bin Laden. Those that dedicated their lives to finding him, never got the those punchlines,he became their obsession for
10 years and the film Zero Dark Thirty is a well crafted, intense and suspenceful view of The Greatest Manhunt in History.

Director and producer Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal instantly involve the audience with a dark screen
and only chilling audio from 9-11.The film mainly focuses on C.I.A operative Maya( an excellent Jessica Chastain) and her
gathering of intel on locating bin Laden. At first she seems stand offish,or taken aback by the interrogation tactics of fellow
operative Dan (the great Jason Clarke),but soon displays her defiant and relentless nature.
Not only does she have to get intel from shadowy figures connected to bin Laden, but deal with the politics and red tape involved
when fellow operatives begin to focus on the terrorist activity of the day,or feel the intel on bin Laden isnt accurate enough.

ZDT is right up there with ARGO as an involving look at a historic moment. The audiences knows the outcome, but it still manages
to stir them, and leave them in suspense.Lulled into a sense of security due to the casualness of a scene only to be completely shaken and riveted
within minutes.Every scene is detailed and crafted to involve ,mixing chilling real footage of old and recent terrorist activity.

The C.I.A and government higher ups have disavowed the film, saying its non factual particularly when it comes down to the
torture tactics displayed in several scenes in order to get intel on bin Laden, but there is no denying ZDT is a great and impressive
procedural and one of the best films of 2012
