Cloud Atlas

Cloud_Atlas_Poster.jpg

Cloud Atlas is one of the most epic and ambitious films i have ever had the pleasure of watching.
Directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer based on the book by David Stephen Mitchell
they present 6 stories laced with, romance, adventure, humor, tragedy and triumph.
There are small stories and large post-apocalyptic and futuristic stories.

These stories have a similar theme the eternal desire for freedom we possess that can be symbolized
through the actions of one,and how that desire is one that comes to fruition time after time.
The stories also include how a chance meeting, act of kindness,a shared love or interest of something
can inspire, lead to good fortune or our downfall.Sometimes the aforementioned sets us on a path
we have crossed before and may have placed at the back of our minds ,but once placed on it again,
we realize how much we desired to walk down it again. How many times have we heard the statements?:
I was influenced by.i follow the example of .
Looking closely at the film you can see who influenced the original writer and the directors.

I admire the cast and their hard work (Tom Hanks,Halle Berry,Jim Broadbent,Hugo Weaving,Jim Sturgess,Bae Doona,
Ben Whishaw,James D'Arcy,Zhou Xun,Keith David,David Gyasi,Susan Sarandon,Hugh Grant)and their patience,patience
that was likely tested a bit as the cast portrayed several different characters under heavy make up.

The film time jumps often as if i was sitting in the theatre with a remote in my hand going back and forth between
one show and another at times it was a bit ovewhelming and sometimes felt a bit drawn out.At times CO dances with
pretention but thankfully overcomes these flaws.

Any other make up team,or artist coming up against the team of CO at any upcoming awards ceremony might as
well go straight to the after parties.

Went to the advance screening for Lincoln on Monday (last night). Movie opens in wider release in just under 2 weeks' time. The movie is heavy on dialogue, and picks up a bit in the 2nd half as the running time is 2.5 hours. Strong performances from Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones, as expected. Those guys are easily 2 of the best of our current generation (past 20 - 30+ years). Very strong cast overall with the likes of Sally Field, Walton Goggins (The Shield - "Shane"), David Costabile (Breaking Bad - "Gale"), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hal Holbrook, Jackie Earle Haley, etc. Be patient with the movie and watch it for the performances, and especially those of the aforementioned Day-Lewis and Jones.

Saw "The Cabin in the Woods" last night and it was great with a surprising ending. I guess they were making sure there would be no sequel.

its a good movie. I enjoyed it. It wasnt what i thought it would be. But its watchable and could watch it again.

Yeah - I won passes back in the spring or summer, but had plans so I had to pass 'em off to a friend. Still been meaning to check it out and liked how people are saying it isn't fully predictable or formulaic for the genre.

FLIGHT

Flight_film_poster.jpg

There have been so many sinister characters from various films, that i couldnt wait to see get their
comeuppance, and then there are characters who are morally flawed and then some, but when
the character is coupled with the right actor i cant wait or hold out hope that he or she will
redeeem themselves before the final scene of the film.
In the film Flight the character William "Whip" Whitaker(Denzel Washington) is the latter.

The white knuckle opening of the film features a plane flown by Whip entering extreme turbulence and experiencing mechanical failure
thru the extreme maneuver of flying the plane upside down Whip and the crew are able to crash land
saving 96 of 102 people onboard.Of course after every crash there is an NTSB investigation, and when this
leads to the fact that Whip was intoxicated the film becomes an examination of an addict and the effects it has on
the people in the addicts life.

Director Robert Zemeckis shifts the gears of this film with great ease from an incredible action sequence to
a moving drama. There are so many standout brief touches that focuses on facing mortality, one standout scene taking place
on a hospital stairwell a scene easily stolen by James Badge Dale.
Then there's John Goodman as Harling Mays Whips dealer/friend/enabler .His scenes with Washington are both
mesmerizingly sad and darkly humorous.
Washington is outstanding as the arrogant addict Whip.He has supportive people around him ,a recovering heroin addict named
Nicole (Kelly Reillyt)that becomes his lover, friend and union rep Charlie Anderson (Bruce Greenwood),and his attorney
Hugh Lang (Don Cheadle) but it's Whip's way or the highway, and it is truely mesmerizing to watch Washington as Whip
try to outrun his addictions and slowly give in to them again.Even something as sobering as a plane crash
or someone he loves may prove to be no match to his addictions.
The fact that the audience let out several gasps at the actions of Whip, show how great of an actor Washington is.

It definitely looks like Washington will go head to head with Richard Gere who also portrayed a flawed but likeable character this year
for several best actor nominations

Halfway through season 1 of Boss.

Skyfall

Skyfall_poster.jpg

All was thought lost when the James Bond franchise became entangled in legal trouble 2 year ago due to
MGM studios filing for bankruptcy, but fortunately these troubles faded and Bond is back just in time
for the franchises 50th anniversary on the big screen.

Unlike the so-so last Bond outing Quantum of Solace, Skyfall is tighter ,more interesting and better paced.
Pulling viewers in with an exhilarating opening sequence and singer Adele's stirring voice belting out
the films title song.
Daniel Craig continues to strike the right chords as Bond,as he faces mortality, his past, and loyalty to Queen
and country or a life of pleasureable leisure.
Javier Bardem as cyber-terrorist Raoul Silva in no way wanted Silva to resemble Anton Chigurh the villain
he portrayed in No Country For Old Men ,and he doesnt .He's excellent as the fey, insane, and scolding
Silva, who toys with Bond in a way he has never been toyed with before.

The Bond ladies not to be forgotten: Naomie Harris as Eve is capable,,tough, slinky and beautiful,
and Bérénice Lim Marlohe as Sévérine is mysterious and gorgeous(the less make up the better)
Judi Dench as M is great as usual the film displays the loyalty she has for Bond and he for her.

Also nice touches from Ben Whishaw as Q, the MI6 quartermaster, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney

There is this great balance of classic and new in the film, some of the balance is used for humorous moments
and nods to the 50 year series, and how advances in technology can be helpful and hurtful.
The misses in the film are few.

Even at the films 2 hour and 25 minute running time i wanted more but i guess i will have to wait along with
legions of other Bond fans for his next big screen mission.

Midnight's Children - Would recommend it - saw it @ the theater
Hysteria - For some quick laughs - free - library - NON-fuckable hoes in the late-1800s & vibrators
Awake - For Jessica Alba's general fuckability - free - library - movie is short at under 1.5 hours - feels "made for tv" at times

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver_Linings_Playbook_Poster.jpg

Silver Linings Playbook may not be the first film about falling in love with someone who is mentally unstable ,but
at least it steers clear of the common theme of a character falling for someone who is mentally unstable, and they
write them off as being a little eccentric or a free spirit. Then the nervous breakdown comes, and suddenly the character
is dumbfounded, meets his new lovers family who informs him/her that the love of his/her life has been in and out of
psychiatric institutions for years.

Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper in one of his best roles) is checked out of the psych ward by his loving mom (the great
Jacki Weaver) where he has been after assaulting his wife's lover.Pat is diagnosed as bipolar. He soon meets the newly widowed
Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) through his caving under the pressures of life friend Ronnie(John Ortiz) and Tiffany's
controlling sister Veronica (Julia Stiles). Pat is obssesed with regaining his wife's favor, and Tiffany says she can
help by being a mediator/messenger for him,but only if he agrees to be her partner in a dance competition.

There is a natural and true feel in many scenes in SLP. Losing a loved one especially a spouse can definitely
lead to a widow/widower to become sexually promiscuous, trying to fill a sudden void in their lives and Lawrence
tackles this persona with such ease she's a joy to watch and she's just a natural magnetic big screen presence
Also when Pat and Tiffany discuss the various medications they have taken, how a mental breakdown can come out of nowhere,
and can be downright scary and trying and frustrating experience for family members. The latter is wonderfully acted and displayed by
Robert De Niro as Pat's Philadelphia Eagles obssesed father. This is the liveliest Deniro has been on the big screen in years.

At times the comedy mixed with the serious subject matter doesnt work, and the script has some contrived moments here and there
and some familiar rom-com themes slip in.

In the end i applaud SLP for it's great ensemble cast which includes Chris Tucker as Pat's friend and fellow patient Danny,
for not conforming to the aforementioned theme, and its true view of mental illness.

what trips me out is most in the movie never acted before. the cat who plays her father was a baker. the crew went to his bakery to get shit everyday, eventually he read for the part. felt he could do it cuz he live thru Katrina and all that. The director is fuckin 29 years old and now EVERYBODY in hollywood wants to work with this guy.

the girl was like 6 and could'nt read when she got the part. as I was watchin I was like "Is this like a documentary? Where did they find this lil girl?"

Saw an early Hitchcock starring Joseph Cotten

Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

Charlotte 'Charlie' Newton is bored with her quiet life at home with her parents and her younger sister. She wishes something exciting would happen and knows exactly what they need: a visit from her sophisticated and much traveled uncle Charlie Oakley, her mother's younger brother. Imagine her delight when, out of the blue, they receive a telegram from uncle Charlie announcing that he is coming to visit them for awhile. Charlie Oakley creates quite a stir and charms the ladies club as well as the bank president where his brother-in-law works. Young Charlie begins to notice some odd behavior on his part, such as cutting out a story in the local paper about a man who marries and then murders rich widows. When two strangers appear asking questions about him, she begins to imagine the worse about her dearly beloved uncle Charlie.

Enjoyed it.

I dug this reboot way more than the Sam Raimi Tobey McGuire series, seemed more realistic.

I don't.
No way this kid would be a bullied kid in his school. Way too boy bandish. Tobey McGuire is the closest thing to a real life Peter Parker ever. He looks like a nerd in real life.
And he revealed his identity to damn near everybody. He might as well had not even worn the mask. Just a big ass name tag that said PETER PARKER: SUPERHERO.
It wasn't bad but it wasn't the Raimi movies (the first two).

That's what I hated, the mask comes off too much.

Life of Pi

Life_of_Pi_2012_Poster.jpg

Stunning visuals coupled with the story of a young man named Pi (Suraj Sharma) who
becomes lost at sea with a a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker (after a clerical error)
pulled me into the film, but its strong look at faith, religion, the dark side of human nature,
and triumph of the human spirit made me reflect on my own views of religion and faith.

The story is lacking in certain turns, but still manages to charm throughout and features
some of the boldest 3D effects and SFX i have ever seen on the big screen.

Killing Them Softly

Killing_Them_Softly_poster.jpg

At 97 minutes Killing Them Softly is one of the shortest mob films i have ever seen, but crams in a lot
of colorful characters, stinging and raw dialogue coupled with brutal violence.Scoot McNairy as Frankie and
Ben Mendelsohn as Russell are 2 low level crooks who look like they should be taking showers for a month instead of
robbing an illegal card game run by Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta) at the behest of Johnny Amato (Vincent Curatola)
The robbery leads to hitman Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) being called in to track down and take out anyone that was involved.
KTS interestingly uses the 2008 Presidential election and the economic collapse as a parable to whats
playing out on the gritty streets. Pitt, including Richard Jenkins as Driver, the aforementioned actors, and a handful of other character actors
are great but its James Gandolfini as Mickey a hit man who likes his alchohol and prostitutes but cant stop talking about
his wife who is threatening to leave him is the standout.

Even with its short running time KTS drags a bit but still held my attention and definitely entertains.
