Denzel to Daughter: ‘You’re Dark-Skinned’ So You’ll Have to Work Harder

This is what is needed.

Sounds like settling to me.

:hmm:

Fuck settling in 2012.

It's not settling, Im saying the door is already open for her once she starts trying to act because of her father. She shouldn't expect to be in big blockbusters out the gate. She should learn her craft like Denzel was saying in the video.

Nia Long and G. Union shouldn't even be in the same sentence with Ann Hathaway. Not that they can't act as well, but I have seen most of what all of them have done and they have not even done the type of shit Ann has and until they do, we have no way of telling.

which is the entire fucking point  you just said that they haven't done the type of stuff Ann has done, and why is that? because they haven't had the same opportunities to do those roles....

you don't think Nia long couldn't pull off a devil wears prada? and i don't mean nia long TODAY i mean nia long same age as Ann was when she did it...? I know she could have.

You don't think Gabrielle couldn't pull off Catwoman? she's been in black action movies... and she has shown range emotionally and can play MANY different parts...however which parts is she offered... where are their bad performances? not bad movies... but where their acting was bad?

:dunno: suit yourself. in my experience tho, people like that (even the lurkers you speak of) their views aren't gonna be shaken by readin a convo on a messageboard tho...not knockin you or anything.

understood, but sometimes it needs to be said. this is a deeper thread, which might catch readers since denzel and skin color is mentioned..

if it were some random multiple pic thread with a lot of girls i'd just call him out and move on.

Exactly. Being Black you cannot be average. Being a woman you cannot be average. Being dark-skinned you cannot be average.

Being all three you have to be super superior. Work harder, longer, be 100 times better than your competition.

There is a history of light-skinned people who were super militant so there is no excuse for dark skinned people.

I am dark skinned and I feel no special pressure because of it from white people.

I do feel so pressure from dark skinned African American women cause it's like they are scared that they make other dark skinned babies or some shit.

But I love dark skinned women but I also understand that culturally, dark skinned people in this country have issues and so tend to stay away from getting with other dark skinned people.

Wish it wasn't so.

WWWEEELLLL, if she's got some of her father's acting genes, she certainly hot. She will have dues to pay coming up but if she works hard I don't see much of a problem.

Nah, militant as in standing for truth.

I have no problems with the word.

It's a war and every war has soldiers.

Militancy is about discipline.

So I understand the context in which I used the word.

I'm not afraid of being mis-interpreted.

I'll be judged by my actions at the end of the day, not my words.

Words can only express only a little bit of what I feel and how I view life.

Especially these words of greek origin (Plato)

Where the fuck do you see i say that?

I said I love dark skinned women and they tend to stay away from me in this country.

Wish it wasn't so.

I love dark skinned women.

i came from a country of dark skinned people so that is my preference.

My entire family is dark.

My mother is dark, my sisters are dark and my nieces are dark.

Now say something about dark skinned women so I can fuck you up

:angry::angry::angry:

Agreed

Sad but true.

Oh, and don't lay the responsibility for black Hollywood on the feet of Denzel or any other actor. Just because he's a great actor, doesn't mean he'd be a good businessman or media mogul.

There is no black hollywood.

There is only but 1 cause.

Total liberation and self determination.

There are soldiers and there are by-standers.

By your fruits, you shall be known.

Many are called but few are chosen.

You chose yourself.

No one owes anything to anybody only to the movement of truth and justice.

Those who lose their life will gain it more abundantly.

I was at the movies the other day and noticed how Hollywood pushes older women out the back door quick. Yet they keep the same old men until they fall out on set. This poster is what made me reflect on that. They have two younger dudes, three old dudes, and two young chicks I never saw before.

Now imagine how hard it is for sistas in Hollywood where they only allow two or maybe three at a time to get any shine. Halle Berry is like the only black female over 40 who still gets regular work on major films. When she can't hold a candle to Angela Basett or Kimberley Elise.

If you keep applying to GM for a mechanic job and keep getting turned down, at what point would you go open your own garage?

:hmm:

I'm not arguing against what your saying. It's just an observation. My first observation was about women in Hollywood in general, my second about black women.

He could've made as good a point imo w/o telling his daughter something about her complexion...depending on how she handles/receives that advice...she could develop a complex about herself/beauty...

Coulda simply stressed that she needs to be more than just a pretty face is she wants to make it in H'wood period...fuck it tho...it's his family and he knows the profession

Only reason I'm not gonna argue is cuz it's his daughter and he's telling her about his craft...but I would not tell that to my daughter re: her complexion...I would want her to strive to be the best possible regardless of her complexion and keep that separate that from her knowledge of racism in this society...it's not a matter of right and wrong...just how I would prefer to handle it

I think that's b.s. whoopi goldberg, cicely tyson, pam grier, angela bassett, gabrielle union, nia long, regina king, etc. aren't light skinned and except for whoopi were considered beauties in their day. they have had longer and more successful careers than troy beyer, rae dawn chong, vanity, etc.

that's what black people seem to be obssessed with skin color.

if anything your weight is what they'll descriminate against in show business.

I'm saying work hard no matter of your race.

Co-sign these posts to the fullest.

yeah as real as that was something about it still rubbed me the wrong way

"you're darkskinned, you have to work harder, dont worry about being one of the pretty girls" ... It just sounded weird

but at least she is prepared for the real world now ... I mean hearing that from your own father, means hearing it from anyone else wont make you feel as bad for sure

that was the cold truth rubbing you the wrong way. It is sad but thats reality our darker sisters gotta be bad as hell to make it. I remember oprah saying that a relative once told her that she aint pretty so you better be smart

um i think you just proved the point fam
looked at all of those people you named? those people have CHOPS they aren't a pretty face and marginal skills every one of them is a triple threat quadruple threat and because they are so much more talented than majority they still have a career.

lets look at gabrielle union, nia long, and regina king. how many blockbuster movie offers have they gotten that weren't basically black movies?

think about how much more talented they are than someone like a blake lively or a anne hathaway but still aren't even considered a listers when they should have been a listers for YEARS

viola davis should be on meryl streep's level as far as recognition, legendary status, acclaim, and money and she's JUST NOW getting some sort of due, and STILL has to take marginal parts beneath her talents...

Thank u

Halle isn't horrible. She just ain't great.

And there's a handful of older actresses that still work steadily.

Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Jessica Lange, Judi Dench are beasting.

How about giving these black actresses some meaty roles instead of dumping them into Tyler Perry purgatory.

As for Denzel not owning a studio or production company, I used to feel the same way until I saw how much hell George Lucas went thru to get Red Tails out. Even though it was a bad movie, Lucas should not have had to use his own money to get it out. He's made billions for Hollywood. Denzel probably realized that its too much heartache involved in trying run anything like that. He and Spike could not even get funding for Inside Man 2. His name recognition alone will get his daughters some opportunities once she finish school. I'm sure she'll be able to get some roles on tv...

The point is not even him owning a studio , but putting the THOUGHT in his daughters head that she could. How much does that cost?

This was definitely worth the hour spent watching it. Richard Gere regarding the Dalai Lama was inspiring. Denzel regarding Mandela was inspiring. The discussion about women actors was dead on. The best advice was still from Denzel to his daughter I believe because everyone there repeated it in some form or fashion. Paul Scofield in King Lear was spot on. A very good episode. Thank you sir.

Are you trying to say they didn't work hard though?

They had to bust they're asses to get where they're at.

Sad, but so, so true! Off subject a bit, but i just told my boy havent that many black films even came out this year.. as if we are being exterminated from films!!
