Sinead O'Connor's remarks on Trayvon Martin

the letter wasnt just about trayvon. it was about this...

and that applies to black people too. thats why she touched on the negativity in our music and the hate some of us seem to have for one another.

she wasnt overselling anything, cats just aint used to a non black person talking about our struggle/issues from a place of compassion and genuine respect.

Leave it be man, he sees what he wants to see, everything else doesnt matter.

You cant help him, lets just move on

good read
the message is clear stop being disappointed in who said what
lots of black people have spoken up and talked about the injustice including athletes and celebrities.

the letter she wrote is more effective in a sense only because she is white, and its proven that white people don't listen to black people...they only listen to other white people. so we shouldn't diminish what others have done, simply because they couldn't do what she just based solely on the color of our skin.

if oprah said this, white people would dismiss it as her just spewing propaganda as a black woman

when sinead o'connor says it, regardless of how they act on the outside, on the inside they have to look at themselves and listen to some cold truths.

i commend her and everyone else who is speaking up about this, what i don't commend is the justice system

the line that people who have the upper hand is always " the system works"

i think most recently, grant and not martin would totally disagree.

the system has never worked for us it isn't designed to, and it took some tragic circumstances for us to see this.

i mean the civil rights movement was because the system wasn't designed for us and we couldn't take it any further..my parents marched and protested to share basic equalities. now we need to push for a better change.

we need to realize that everybody talking about racism and white supremacy (kefts, kaya) isn't a crackpot or militant and should be taken seriously. the reason they say what they say is because it needs to be heard and beaten into our brains so that we get it.
when the system changed from its overt nature we forgot about things, we got complacent and relaxed. we didn't think that the covert would be just as bad and in most cases even worse.

unfortunately it has taken and overt action for us to wake up somewhat and be alarmed...but the problem with this entire case and the system itself is the covert status. how the police department covered this up and helped him, how the law in a sense was covert because up until this incident most of us including myself outside of florida didn't even know the law existed.

im just one person and i know everybody feels that way too, but if we support each other and share ideas and really work together for common goals we can get them done, stop being picky and start picketing.
stop choosing HOW you want to take up a cause, and actually do something to take it up. if you keep waiting for something that fits your mold or exactly what you want to do, chances are you won't be doing anything.

respect

- which is why it will be laughed at and ignored.

she basically called hip hop disposable and evil (while praising black music of the past).

that shit won't fly w/the masses...at least not w/black folks.
Yeah, fuck that fat CAC bitch... She can't talk about Rap like that!

For the rest of my life,

I'll never forget meeting this chick at a CMJ convention in '86/'87 when I was a radio DJ at City College in NYC.

Her manager was this stereotypical looking full red hair Irish Dude making the rounds with her. They both came up to a group of us with introductions. We felt the Dude was kind of slimy walking around with this pixie, very quiet bald, little White Irish girl.

After they left our group, a few of the peeps laughed and said that this little girl wasn't going anywhere. And that her bald-look was a bad trend.

Me.
I didn't know what the fuck to think at the time.
But I've been a fan ever since.

I still kick myself for missing that show she did afterwards at The Ritz (now Webster Hall)

Again, when white people say OBVIOUS shit, BGOL goes nuts.

She's not even a relevant white person, just a random has been white person who has absolutely nothing to lose by stating the obvious.

I just don't get it.

man i swear yall try to be difficult. this msg would be powerful coming from anybody. even more so coming from a white foreigner because its not every day that u see/hear someone outside of our own professing their admiration and respect for our culture.

and what do u mean by relevant? if u are alive on this planet with an opinion, ur relevant. i hate this term but seems like "hating" would be a good word to describe your reply.

i am one of the most "militant" black men on this board and have no real love for anyone outside of my own people. check my post history and that will say all that needs to be said. HOWEVER... i am not so blinded that i can not see when someone is speaking the truth.

no i am not caping for her or saving some a pink toe, on the contrary. i respect anyone who recognizes the truth, and the truth is we as black people are the mothers and fathers of civilization.

the truth is we fight every day to be accepted as human let alone creators and if some pink toe decides that they see the light then let it shine. not because WE as blacks need to hear it but the world needs to hear it, regardless of the messenger.

its still fuck these pink toes that dont mean us no good and still fuck these dam police that declared open season on my children, but someone from there side needs to stand the fuck up as well and if it starts with her then i support her. period.

she aint said shit i havent said on this board or any other of the so called "militants", but white folks dont listen to what we have to say. white folks only listen to white folks. if she wants to preach truth and justice then i got enough sense to stand out of the dam way.

i see armchair e-militants don't even take sundays off....

hell no. and when all else fails they will start cosigning each other.

This was eye opening, breathtaking, very informative, educational and said with so much truth and love. Much respect to her.

I'm not trying to be difficult bruh. She went on an rant, sounds like she's high, and sounds like she's stereotyping black youth.

I get her overall message, but it's so elementary it's paternalistic. Even down to referencing 'Get rich or die trying" that shit was like 10 years ago. Peep how she switched it from why people should stand up for Trayvon to the immorality of current black culture. Bitch talking about us like we pets.

And yes, she is irrelevant.

And black youth in America. I'm talking to you here too. I love you. So I don't mean to sound cross, I'm just being a mother.. Why are you killing each other? Why are you hating yourselves? You are the most important people God ever sent to this earth, every man, woman and child among you! Don't let uneducated people win and take your self-esteem or your esteem for each other, and make you kill each other. over guns, drugs, bling, or any other nonsense.

You are now entering YOUR version of a sort of civil rights movement and you're gonna see history being made in what has certainly the profoundest potential to become THE most wonderful country on earth. Because soon ALL 'isms' and 'sits'' will end. including racism, as the people of the earth begin to understand, we are all one.

We came from one mother. We are all brothers and sisters. And we CAN get beyond this ILLUSION of separateness. With prayer and love. It CAN change. It WILL change. And YOU guys (young people of all kinds) are the ones who are gonna GENTLY change it. And you know where it starts? With MUSIC.

Don't be guided by rap. Gangsta or otherwise. Sure.. enjoy it.. adore it.as I do.. but realize this.. rap ain't about your civil or spiritual rights, baby boys and girls. It.. along with most music nowadays.. is about falsenesses and vanities. Bling, drugs, sex, guns and people- dissing. Its giving you the message you ain't 'good enough' if you don't have bling and ting.. and money. Or if you're not what it deems 'sexy'.

(This is true of all popular music not rap alone. I know. Its tragically true of all popular youth culture the world over).

Poor Curtis Mayfield must be crying all day and night ALL day and night in heaven, every day and night.. To see what has been so successfully achieved by those who sent guns, drugs, and bling to squash the civil rights movement. Now you all don't have to be murdered by racists any more.. you're murdering each other FOR them! And your parents and grandparents are left crying.

Go back to strong black musical guides who left you information in the 60s and 70s. when they were living through the civil rights struggle. Curtis Mayfield. The Impressions. Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson. Sing back the Holy Spirit ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, as those artists did.

Forget bling. Forget "Get Rich Or Die Trying". That is an evil message. Evil my dears is only life backwards. Turn it the right way up. With music. The messages American black youth are being given through music are not about the spiritual and therefore strong and conquering but PEACEFUL making of YOUR country into the wonderful place it secretly is and can be.. BECAUSE OF YOU, and BY YOU!!

You know not how you are adored, appreciated, valued, loved, cried for, smiled for, prayed for, all over the world. You know not how much inspiration and uplift-ment of heart you give to millions just by your presence on earth.

These musical guides will give you self-esteem. When you have self-esteem you can achieve anything. You can stand in the street as many did yesterday and change your country peacefully and with song. Chant down Babylon as the Rastas say. Rastafari will also give you self esteem. Investigate it.

You will notice, my beautiful sons and daughters, when you study, as you must, footage of all civil rights gatherings, how singing and music and sound and voice and the Holy Spirit were all employed and were so much part of the energy which moved things along.. just as running was in the South African gatherings I saw on tv in my own childhood, which inspired me to survive my own horrors.

What you listen to musically and whether or not you employ the Holy Spirit's highest will for your life is whats gonna make you transcend all you're having to suffer (the worst of which is low self-esteem.. or esteem based upon material 'success' or 'sexiness')) as a result of being the descendants of people who didn't ask to be stolen and leave you where you are. Delete bling. Get conscious with your music. Demand conscious music from your artists. Go back to the artists who left you proper guidance.

This is some serious stuff and we (all manner of musical artists) are too silent on matters of enormous spiritual importance. Lemme ask you.. Jayzee and Eminem et al. Why was it always the black people only worked in the post rooms of record companies, which was always in the basement? Why was it that as each floor went up the skins got paler till it was fuckin ghosts at the top? And all us artists.. even me.. said nothing? Those buildings (record companies) always struck me as being a microcosm or painting of America, racially speaking. Christ almighty.. if its like that in the music business how is anything ever going to change?

This is the section you take issue with... but here's the question..what did she say that was not true?

so far it seems that you take issue with HOW she said it not WHAT she said...if thats the case then its just nitpicking..

if a black woman had written this...changing nothing..would you take this as the food for thought its meant to be or would you still think its talking down to you like "pets"??

And while Sinead may not be cutting edge today this is a woman who stood on NATIONAL TELEVISION DURING A LIVE SHOW and pretty much called the Pope and the catholic church out on their child molesting ways..Considering how big and powerful the church is thats no small feat homie...she took the hits for that only to be proven true and right years later when the church had to ADMIT it was ass raping kids for decades.

So Sinead isnt some shit talking sideline sitter. If you don't know that now you know..:smh:

I have a confession to make. I am highly suspicious of white people. By default I think they have their own interests in mind. That's just how I look at the world. Not saying it's wrong or right, that's just how I see things.

What I have issue with is how eager we have become for validation of shit that we know is true and how quick we are to pat white people on the back for doing/saying what is right. Ok, the murder of Trayvon was a tragedy. Ok, we appreciate your support. Now stop right there. Bitch you ain't in the circle. It takes more than a couple of "right on's" to get in the circle.

I was watching this movie about how during the American Revolution the British came over and asked the indians to help fight the Americans because they deserved their land back. Yea, the shit was true, but look how that turned out.
