KIRKLAND DESTROYS ANGULO
By Scott Shaffer

James Kirkland TKO6 Alfredo Angulo... The main event from Cancun, Mexico started off with the round of the year so far. Alfredo Angulo floored James Kirkland within the first thirty seconds of their junior middleweight fight, which appeared to confirm what anyone who saw Kirkland's first-round loss to Nobuhiro Ishida already knew, that Kirkland had no chin. It took about 90 seconds for Kirkland to rewrite the book on himself. Angulo, a confirmed heavy puncher, whaled on Kirkland, pounding him from pillar to post for the next minute trying to end the fight, but Kirkland withstood the onslaught, even though he had trouble tying Angulo hope. Than an astonishing thing happened: Angulo punched himself out and Kirkland reached down deep within himself and found the strength to knock Angulo down. Starting with the second round, the supremely conditioned Kirkland pounded Angulo round after round until the sixth, when the referee stopped the contest with a battered Angulo remaining on his feet, but in a state of semi-consciousness. It was a breathtaking first round, a courageous comeback, and a life-changing win for Kirkland. He has earned the next shot at WBC 154-pound title holder Saul Alvarez, and now Alvarez has the motivation of beating Kirkland for Mexican pride, since Kirkland came to Mexico and beat Angulo, a Mexican. It is doubtful, however, the babied Alvarez will face the challenge, and even less likely the WBC will force the fight. Still, tonight, we saw a truly great fight. source: hbo

This was an excellent fight. Much props to Kirkland, I had predicted an early ko for Angulo but James proved me wrong, he's a beast. Great fight.

Angulo made a terrible mistake in punching himself out, but Kirkland did what he was supposed to do. Kirkland still needs to step up his D. Canelo said he wants the winner of this fight and he is going to have trouble on his hands. Also Martinez might want to stay tuned, because he may not get Chavez or Cotto to bite, but if Kirkland can beat Canelo... there might be some money there. I don't think Canelo will ever fight Martinez even if he does beat Kirkland.

Anyone got the Bute/Johnson fight...:D

Be punched himself out in the first round, but the constant pressure and bombs Kirkland was hitting him with, weakened the hell out of him. After the 2nd round, Angulo's punches had absolutely nothing on them, and Kirkland felt the difference and 'intelligently' pressed the action. He needs to step up his defense definitely, especially against a Martinez, or an Canelo, even though I believe he is way too strong for Canelo. Canelo is a much better boxer, but Kirkland is a beast.

This is a classic example of the trainer 'making' the fighter in a sense. Kirkland is a whole different fighter mentally with Wolfe in his corner, and it showed even with how me handled the knockdown and subsequent connects, cleared his head and went to work.

Much props to both of them... :yes:

James looked good. It wasn't a great fight by any means to me. It was one sided. However there were lots of hard punches and snapped necks to please the average fan. I thing I like to see James improve more. Because he had the power to do big things in boxing. Good fight. I like to see him in a tough high level fight soon.

I'm still picking my jaw off the floor but I wanted to say one thing about what I feel is the Fight of the Year: all the boxing experts polled by Yahoo! picked Angulo but now I can't find that column for shit. Don't hide now.

:lol: being wrong on this one is nothing to be ashamed about. Angulo is a tough motherfucker and if he didn't punch himself out... it was going to be a war for the long haul. Either way, it was a very good fight for Kirkland. They should take their lumps like everyone else. If Canelo doesn't back down, I pick Kirkland to win.

I missing how a one side fight was a fight of the year. It isn't like kirkland beat an undefeated possible hall of famer. It was a good fight but nothing like a see saw battle we usual expect from a fight of the year canidate.

I actually agree...:smh: That first round will probably be the round of the year.

I would settle for Round of the Year but Kirkland's surprising performance (not just the physical stuff but the boxing intellect he displayed in being more patient later instead of rushing in) and Angulo's toughness and the fact that he was still throwing some dangerous punches (slowly) late, makes it a contender in 2011. You can't compare it to actual FOY winners of years past, just the current year of fights.

The most beautiful part of the whole fight was the silence of the Mexican crowd when the ref stopped the fight.

:lol::yes:

I was thinking Ann and James might need someone to be gassing up the truck out back for a quick escape. Talk to Max's ass later.

Naw, they respect a young warrior coming in and beating another young warrior in a brawl, but let have been a vet... Max what have been looking for the exit just much as Ann and Kirkland.
