De Gea agrees United move

daviddegeaarmswide20110319_275x155.jpg

Manchester United have signed David De Gea from Atletico Madrid for a fee in the region of £18 million.

De Gea, 20, has signed a five-year deal with the Premier League champions to become Edwin van der Sar's successor. He joins Phil Jones and Ashley Young in moving to Old Trafford to take Sir Alex Ferguson's spending to £50 million this month.

The move comes just four days after De Gea helped Spain's Under-21 side win the European Championships in Denmark.

"I feel very proud and I can't wait to start playing here," De Gea told MUTV. "When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you it obviously makes you very, very happy.

"I saw their interest as an extra motivation to work even harder to show off my ability. It's a great privilege to be part of a club like United and I'm keen to do my best and show what I can do."

De Gea won the Europa League and the European Super Cup with Atletico, but he is yet to win a senior cap for Spain with the tough competition of Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and Victor Valdes ahead of him in the pecking order.

And the quest for Number 20 begins....:yes::yes:

And the quest for Number 20 begins....:yes::yes:

 Should be a great season coming up. We just need a true #10 in midfield, and we'll be ready to go.

Everyone keeps eyeing Sneijder, and that's cool, but i'd be happy with Modric in a heartbeat, and ship Berba back to the Lane.

That's just me though.

Ship off Berba ONLY if Sir Alex keeps Welbeck and Macheda for the season. Im not sold on Owen and Gibson in case Rooney or Chicha gets injured.

As for a #10, I read somewhere Nasri wanted out at Arsenal. He would bring a much needed free flow style to old trafford, but he's a bit soft. I dunno, but I'm excited for this coming season.

Man U and PSG all day!!!

I'm sure SAF will bring Welbeck and Macheda, and maybe even Baba Dioup back. They've been in great form for their loan sides, so he's got that in his back pocket.

I think with Nasri, while he might lack a bit in the defensive side, we have Fletcher, and Anderson, who can both hold him down in that regard. Every report i've seen on Nasri points him in our direction, but we'll see what the French Jew has to say about it.

Seems like he's not trying to sell anyone, nor buy anyone, but then again, what's new.

Team moron strikes again..

Platini feels technology is not needed

michelplatiniseppblatter20100618_576x324.jpg

UEFA president Michel Platini insists the introduction of technology is unnecessary following the introduction of goal-line assistants and that there is no longer any "simulation in the area".

There had been pressure from fans and those within the game to introduce technology for some time to avert incidents like Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal for Argentina in the 1986 World Cup.

However, although FIFA president Sepp Blatter has vowed to conduct further tests, it appears neither he nor Platini is keen to utilise technology after the introduction of two additional referees behind the goal-line in the Champions League and Europa League.

"In my opinion, technology isn't good for football," Platini said in an interview with Marca. "Nobody [at UEFA] wants to bring it into our sport - and nor does Blatter.

"The two additional referees in each area are a great help. They would have seen Maradona's hand.

"Football was managed by just one man for 100 years and it was impossible to appreciate everything that happened on the pitch, so sometimes he would make decisions without having seen what went on. Now, if a referee doesn't see something, it's because he's not very good."

Platini believes the goal-line assistants have brought an end to the practice of diving in the area.

"There is no more simulation in the area because there is a referee who sees it," he said. "We are happy and we don't need more technology."

Platini also spoke about UEFA's battle to clean violence and corruption from the game.

"We are fighting and we will always fight against those things. Racism and violence are external circumstances in football - individuals who go to the stadium for political reasons," he said.

"Then there are other factors relative to the game, namely illegal betting - those affect the players directly, they affect me, they affect everyone.

"We have to eliminate it radically, but I need the collaboration of the governments. We are talking about investigations that have already begun, but that are very dangerous. There's a lot of money at stake and I need the governments, the judges and the justice system to help us eradicate the problem."

You guys think De Gea is the right man for United? He is young and Athletico isn't exactly on the same level as Man U...plus will he be able to control that back line when you got guys like Rio there?

Its a do or die situation. If he falters then fans are calling for his head. If he succeeds and plays well Man U has a top keeper for the next 10 - 15 yrs.

Ten to watch at the 2011 Copa América - in pictures

International-Friendly-Fo-012.jpg

Edinson Cavani (Uruguay) We've avoided picking the likes of Lionel Messi, Robinho and Luis Suárez because they are already well known to most, if not all of you, dear readers. But this 21-year-old may already belong in that category too. If not, he will soon. During a preposterously good season for Napoli, which began with a brace on his first start, he showcased his formidable array of attributes, including strength, speed, a finely-honed killer instinct and monstrous shooting power off both feet. Thirty-three goals from 47 matches have led to all of the game's top clubs being linked with him for ridiculous figures. The trinity of him, Suárez and Diego Forlán can make any defence holey

Argentinas-midfielder-Jav-010.jpg

Javier Pastore (Argentina) The riddle that Diego Maradona failed to resolve was how best to feed the attacking talent at Argentina's disposal. Pastore seems to have evolved into the solution. Javier Mascherano will provide the stage on which the 21-year-old, on the back of a superb season with Palermo, is expected to flourish. A supremely skilful playmaker with an eye for goal to boot. If 'El Flaco' ('The Skinny One') clicks, the chances of anyone beating Argentina are slim

Paraguays-striker-Lucas-B-011.jpg

Lucas Barrios (Paraguay) The striker will be on home turf in Argentina: he was born there but declared for Paraguay last year. It would probably be a bit of a stretch to suggest Argentina wish he were playing for them – they're not exactly short of attacking options – but Barrios would not look out of place in any team; powerful, mobile, direct and deft he can serve as target-man and finisher, as he demonstrated when top-scoring for Borussia Dortmund during their triumphant Bundesliga campaign

Brazil-v-Chile-2010-FIFA--013.jpg

Arturo Vidal (Chile) Holding midfielder? Pah, what a limited role. Here is a player who showed throughout the last Bundesliga season that he has the dynamism and tenacity to destroy opponents' scheming and establish a platform for his own team but also the ambition and trickery to thrive on that there platform himself. The 24-year-old is a ferocious tackler and an incisive passer and does a mean line in timely surges into the box to finish off moves that he, in many cases, initiates. Arsenal and Manchester City are among the clubs hoping to prise him from Bayer Leverkusen

Brazils-Neymar-runs-with--005.jpg

Neymar (Brazil) Virtually every scout on the planet seems to have checked out this prodigy over the last two years but Dunga's refusal to take him to the last World Cup means this is Neymar's chance to introduce himself to the world at a major international tournament – and just weeks after shooting his club, Santos, to victory in the Libertadores Cup. You will know him by his outrageous dribbling and surefire finishing, and may even find yourself joining the ranks of those who insist on referring to him as 'the new Pelé' or 'the next Ronaldinho' etc and so forth

Colombias-national-footba-004.jpg

Radamel Falcao (Colombia) Falcao was one of the outstanding players of the last European season, spearheading Porto’s swashbuckling success both at home and abroad, notably bagging a record haul of 17 goals in the Europa League. Two-footed, strong in the air and an instinctive mover and finisher, Falcao’s prolific form at Porto since arriving as a replacement for Lisandro López two years ago followed a similarly devastating spell at River Plate. However, he has so far struggled to reproduce his best at international level. This, then, is being billed as the tournament in which the 25-year-old will finally become as clinical for Colombia as he has been for his clubs. His ability to do that will, of course, depend on his team-mates’ ability to supply him with chances – with that in mind, the form of his somewhat erratic club-mate and compatriot, Fredy Guarín, will also be crucial

Spain-s-Andres-Iniesta-L--003.jpg

Tomás Rincón (Venezuela) Venezuela is the one country in South America where football is not the most popular sport but there is hope that the current generation of players may be the ones to shunt baseball aside. Many of the players who reached the Under-20 World Cup two years ago have graduated to the senior team and have contributed to improved recent results. The most eye-catching of these may be José Salomon Rondon, a barnstorming 21-year-old centre-forward, or perhaps the rampaging right-back Roberto Rosales, but the most important so far has been Tomás Rincón (pictured right). Tidy and sturdy, the Hamburg player is the midfield metronome that makes the whole team tick

Ukraine-v-Brazil---Intern-002.jpg

Thiago Silva (Brazil) Harder than a trigonometry test in Tagalog and more clued-up than a top detective, the quick-footed Milan man may well be the best centre-back in the world. Not for him the heroic last-ditch tackles: because he’s usually snuffed out danger long before it reaches critical levels

Ecuador-v-Greece-014.jpg

Michael Arroyo (Ecuador) He was once banned for six-months for smoking dope but this winger is no slacker. A powerful, rangey runner, he tears down the opposite flank to Antonio Valencia and has recently started to find the net with his thunderous shots. The 24-year-old currently plays his club football for San Luis in Mexico but has been linked with several European clubs

Portugals-Pepe-fights-for-001.jpg

Alexis Sánchez (Chile) Another staple of the transfer rumour mill, since every big club in the world is after this nifty 22-year-old. Speedy, smart and supremely skilful, Sánchez has excelled for Udinese and Chile and amuses himself by dribbling past defences, dissecting them with through-balls or simply bypassing them with deadly long shots. He could be the most exciting player in a Chilean team that bristles with adventure

Speaking as a goalkeeper, absolutely. He's got the agility, the prescene, the awareness, good feet, excellent hands, and he's got something that Van Der Sar doesn't have... that ability to influence cheeky forwards. I've always felt that the prototypical English goalkeeper, always gets beat very easily when playing against a forward with some creativity. VDS was beat by Pedro near post in this last final, and by Eto'o in the same regard just 2 years prior.

I think De Gea will be able to provide more experience in that regard. The most promising fact is his youth. He's only 20, but he plays a solid 5 years ahead of his ahead of himself. I can't imagine how destructive he'll be when he's 25.

I say he replaces Casillas for Spain later down the road.

Sorry Pepe.

Viola slam United approach

Fiorentina-v-Cesena-Alberto-Gilardino_2526973.jpg

the Italy Under-17 goalkeeper revealed on Thursday that he had accepted an offer to join United's Academy.

Yet Corvino is glad that even more of the Tuscan outfit's youth players were not persuaded to move to England.

The Viola official claims a host of their promising youngsters have been targeted by Premier League clubs before opting to continue their development in Italy.

"Fiorentina's sporting director Pantaleo Corvino has taken into consideration the comments made by player Pierluigi Gollini and is surprised by his decision," read a statement on the club's official website.

False illusions

"He takes the opportunity to thank players (Niccolo) Fazzi, (Saverio) Madrigali, (Leonardo) Capezzi, (Federico) Bernardeschi and (Luca) Lezzerini, who have decided to remain with the Viola club and not be lured by false illusions of English sirens in recent days.

"Of the 150 players that have decided to go abroad, no-one has been able to earn a place in the first team."

Defender Michele Fornasier left Fiorentina's youth set-up for United in 2009 and is one of three Italians in their Academy squad along with Alberto Massacci (Empoli) and Davide Petrucci (Roma).

None have threatened the first team yet and although Federico Macheda has made several appearances, the 19-year-old striker was loaned out to Sampdoria last season and is unexpected to establish himself as a regular at United.

Copa America about to start at 8:45 eastern time.

It's going to be Argentina vs Bolivia. The last time they played Argentina had their most embarrassing loss in a 1-6 loss in World Cup qualifying.

Damn! trying to watch it on one of the Spanish Channels. Argentina has a long ass Anthem:eek: seems like it never ends
How come no English Channel is showing the game?... who has the rights of Broadcast in the US?

Univision won the rights to the tourney in the USA. FSC, GOLtv, and ESPN all bowed out for some reason.

It's being broadcasted on YouTube in English.

^Yes, because Messi is the only player on the team.

Anyways, golazo from El Kun.

La Pulga was serving it up to Tevez and Lavezzi, but they couldn't convert early.

edit - also, Banega WTF!

Kun will start from here on out. Lavezzi was a straight up statue out there. Messi was looking for the run, but they never got on the same page. Banega did well when he pushed into the middle, but wth are you doing at the near post? :smh::smh:

Fail. They made Bolivia look like stars.

Pastore, and Biglia should get some burn as well.

Internazionale beat Arsenal to secure £10m midfielder Ricardo Alvarez

Velez-Sarsfields-midfield-007.jpg

Velez Sarsfield have confirmed they have agreed a deal to sell Ricardo Alvarez to Internazionale.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder had been a target for Arsenal and Roma, but will move to Internazionale in a £10m transfer.

A statement on Velez's website read: "Velez Sarsfield Athletic Club announces that it has reached an agreement with the authorities of FC Inter Milan for the transfer of our player Ricardo Alvarez."

Internazionale's new coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, confirmed the club were in talks with Alvarez on Tuesday, telling the press: "Alvarez is a great player. If he came to Inter, he'd be an important reinforcement."

Messi, Tevez, Lavezzi, Diego Milito, Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuaín, Ángel Di María and Javier Pastore... all these offensive options, they're playing in their home country and only 1 goal in 2 games :smh: 2 draws :smh:

Argentina need to get their act together... that shit is embarrasing.

It's not a good sign when Sergio Romero is their best player.:smh:

And this genius of a coach still doesn't put in Pastore, but he puts in Gago?

Also, why is he still starting Lavezzi?
