yeah...its that good and very competitive....remember your starting at 45-48k working only 2-3 days out the week....

next full medical and dental coverage....many perks....you max out around 70-75k....and you can get promoted very easily if you qualify and pass our exams.....

its worth the wait...depressing....nah fam...exciting...

its rare to see a cat get into a major city dept very fast....this isn't the police department....

Those numbers aren't exactly accurate. The 68K is probationary firefighter pay.You get paid that for a year then jump up to the mid 70's right away. Then you get raises every year for four years. The numbers they have posted dont include various bonuses that everybody gets like EMT,Holiday Pay(whether you work that day or not),uniform allowance, etc etc).I know over 30 FF's in San Francisco and on average they are all around 130 K the lowest making over 100K.The cost of living here is about the same as NYC.You can have a nice apartment in a nice area for 1200-1300.So 100K paying 1200 a month for rent...that doable for you? I guarantee there will be plenty of white boys from EVERYWHERE in that line coping an application.
BTW if any of you brothers do pursue it feel free to hit me up.

Somebody at the gym said that lifting weights wasn't gonna help me to much. The most I will need is cardio, and being able to do push ups, pull ups, and sit ups. How much upper body strenth is needed? Our school is supposed ( damn economy ) to start March 6, and I doubt i'll make the first roster due to my ranking. I just need to know what to focus my workout on.

Cardio and all that is great...but most everything you do in the field is based on the upper body.
Think about it....if you are doing ax work, such as chopping a hole in a roof...where will you feel it?...arms and chest.
If you are using a rake...or raising a ladder, arms and chest.
Try to get an attack line up a flight of stairs...arms and chest.Picking someone up...same thing.

And if you have to do the Pompiers in drill school...you better be right up top.

Cleveland will be having a test late 2009. At moment you have to be a resident 6 months before taking test, but that might change if residency requirements get thrown out by Ohio Supreme Court.

Yea this is true for Cleveland Fire. But the job is worth it for anyone wanting to do. Only other job I'd leave the fire dept for is as a male porn star !!!!! LOL

I answered this a few pages back but I passed my CPAT in August for Alabama, there were supposed to have been schools in November, then January, and now March. With the economic problems in the world, the schools dates keep getting changed. I guess I won't get to the school until summer by the look of things.
