After years in development hell, Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's creator-owned classic Y The Last Man seems poised to take advantage of the current wave of popular comics-to-TV adaptations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The series, one of the best-selling and most-acclaimed Vertigo titles since Sandman, ran for sixty issues and was already in development for other media before it ended in 2008. Generally, it's been discussed as a feature film or series of feature films, but fans have often said it would work better on television.

Strangely, it comes around at a time when The Last Man on Earth -- a comedy about the last surviving member of humanity from the LEGO Movie creators -- is airing on FX's sister network FOX.

In Y: The Last Man, every mammal with a Y chromosome dies at the same moment, except one young man and his helper monkey. The story ostensibly centered on his journey to find his girlfriend, who was on the other side of the world when tragedy struck, but turned into a dystopian road trip filled with action, espionage, politics and plenty of gendered commentary.

FX didn't respond to THR's request for a comment, so no official details are available, although the article says Vaughan is looking for a writer to develop the series with him. In addition to his comics work, Vaughan has worked on TV series like Lost and Under the Dome.

this is gonna be tough to pull off

yup

but a wonderful opportunity to tap into the women in the industry.

This could be a 4/5 year showcase.

there is no reason to MESS THIS UP.

This could be huge...

I think they need to team Vaughan with Joss.

and keep Lindeloff FAR away from this.

One of my favorite comics next to walking dead when it came out.

I just hope they do it right as gritty and savage as the comic book was. I have faith in FX since we've been given SOA, BB, etc

'Y: The Last Man' TV Series in the Works at FX (Exclusive)

Comic creator Brian K. Vaughan is attached to develop the graphic novel.
Brian K. Vaughan's beloved comic Y: The Last Man is coming to television.

FX is teaming with Vaughan and Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson to develop the dystopian sci-fi comic as an ongoing series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. A search is under way to find a writer to develop the series with Vaughan. A director for the potential series has not yet been determined. Y: The Last Man, which is purely in development at this time, will be produced by FX and FX Productions.

FX declined comment.

Y: The Last Man ranks as one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed comic book series of all time. The Vertigo title was first launched in 2002 and revolves around Yorick Brown — the last surviving human with a Y chromosome — and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. The series follows escape artist Yorick after the mysterious plague as he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world's male chromosomes.

The series, written and created by Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, ran for 60 issues and has been collected in multiple graphic novels.

The news of a Y: The Last Man TV series comes after a long waiting period as rights to the series reverted back from New Line to Vaughan after the company's plans to convert the comics to a feature film were scrapped.

New Line — a corporate sibling to publisher Vertigo — acquired the film rights to the series in 2007 and set David Goyer, Carl Ellsworth and director D.J. Caruso to adapt. The latter wound up walking away from the project after New Line didn't want to produce the saga as a three-film franchise but rather a two-hour stand-alone feature.

In March 2012, Jericho's Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia were in final negotiations to take on the property with J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and David Goyer producing and Mason Novick and Jake Weiner set as executive producers. The latter fell apart in September 2014 when Vaughan announced that the rights were in the process of reverting back to him and the movie was dead.

"We wanted to tell a complete story … but not the whole story," Vaughan said at the time, noting that he had hoped that "in success, we could get tell the rest of our serialized adventure."

Y: The Last Man counts fans in Joss Whedon, French film director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans and Now You See Me) as well as Chuck alum Zachary Levi, who expressed interest in taking on the role of Yorick — going so far as to have his character on the former NBC comedy read the graphic novel in an episode. Quizzed by THR in September 2014 ahead of the fall comic book invasion on broadcast, Y: The Last Man was singled out as a property that should be the next to come to the small screen.

A Y: The Last Man series at FX would mark Vaughan's return to television following CBS' Under the Dome (which he developed for Showtime and ultimately departed following its freshman season on CBS) and Lost. He's currently writing Image Comics' critical hit Saga.

For Jacobson and Simpson, meanwhile, Y: The Last Man extends the duo's relationship with FX, where the company is under an overall deal with its in-house production arm FXP. The duo, whose credits include The Hunger Games franchise, are currently teaming with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk on FX anthology American Crime Story.

Should Y: The Last Man go to series, it would give FX perhaps the crown jewel of comic books and put the cable network on the map with fanboys.

AMC has ratings juggernaut The Walking Dead and its companion, Fear the Walking Dead, as well as controversial take Preacher due next year; ABC has Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter; The CW has Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow; CBS has Supergirl; Fox has Gotham, the upcoming Lucifer and is developing X-Men; while Sony's PlayStation has Powers, which was developed multiple times at FX. Syfy, meanwhile, is developing Superman prequel Krypton from Goyer and TNT has Titans, among others in the works.

Vaughan is repped by Verve and Ziffren Brittenham.

actually Fox making two X-Men related shows, which both dont focus on the X Men themselves,Hellfire(Hellfire Club) and Legion..

guess Fox caved in and will do some kind of agreement with Marvel about the Fantastic 4 similar to what Sony doing with Spider Man :dunno:

Is this gonna be on FX or some streaming service?

Y: The Last Man is an upcoming American drama television series starring Diane Lane, Ben Schnetzer, Olivia Thirlby and Ashley Romans that is set to premiere on September 13, 2021, on FX on Hulu.[1][2] It is based on the comic book series Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Eliza Clark serves as showrunner after Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal exited the project.[3]

On October 14, 2015, it was reported that FX had begun development on a television series adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's comic book series Y: The Last Man. Vaughan was set to produce alongside Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Production companies involved with the series were expected to include Color Force and FX Productions.[8]

On November 14, 2016, it was announced that Michael Green would serve as showrunner for the potential series in addition to writing a pilot script with Vaughan.[9] On January 12, 2017, it was reported that FX was expecting to receive the script in the next few months.[10] On May 31, 2017, it was clarified that Green had solely written the script and that Vaughan had read and liked it.[11] On July 21, 2017, it was confirmed that FX had received a draft of the script from Green, that they had liked it, and that discussions over the potential series were ongoing.[12] On January 16, 2018, FX CEO John Landgraf commented on the series' status during the annual Television Critics Association winter press tour saying, "[We feel] pretty optimistic, not quite at a final decision point. But we got a script I really like, a draft we really like recently." Landgraf went on to comment that Green was now available for the series following his departure from American Gods.[13]

On April 5, 2018, it was announced that FX had given the production a pilot order. Green was expected to co-showrun the series with Aida Mashaka Croal, both of whom were also set to executive produce alongside Melina Matsoukas, Jacobson, Simpson, and Vaughan. Matsoukas was also slated to direct the pilot episode.[14] On February 4, 2019, it was announced at the Television Critics Association's annual winter press tour that the production had been given a series order for a first season, expected to premiere in 2020.[15]

In April 2019, Green and Croal exited the series due to creative differences.[16] In June 2019, it was announced that Eliza Clark would be replacing Croal and Green as the showrunner.[3] In February 2020, it was concluded that Clark, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force and Vaughan would executive produce. Matsoukas also serves as executive producer, as does Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda. Nellie Reed serves as producer.[17] In May 2020, it was announced that the show's title had been changed from Y to Y: The Last Man.[18] On June 22, 2020, it was announced that the series would premiere FX on Hulu instead of FX's linear cable network.[19] In October 2020, it was announced that along with serving as showrunner, Eliza Clark would also be writing the first two episodes, with Louise Friedberg directing those episodes. FX also announced that the entire first season would be directed by women.[7] The series is scheduled to premiere on September 13, 2021.[2]
