Quantum Break is a surprising success

Remedy's touch and style is all over Quantum Break, which is a strength and, at a few points, a weakness as well. But it's more than that, a real transmedia experiment — I know how it sounds — that succeeds in ways that other games don't even try. There's some wonky shooting and a few cringe-worthy story cliches present. But ineffective cover systems and narrative fridges notwithstanding, Quantum Break feels like the first action game taking real lessons from the Netflix binge-watch era, and in that respect, it's a surprising success.

thejimquisition - 8.5

Quantum Break is not the most revolutionary of games, and its cute time toys cover what is, at heart, a fairly standardized shooter. However, it carries itself with style and speed to create something genuinely fascinating to play, flavored by a story that, while failing to pay off in the final stretch, is more detailed and engrossing than most in its league.

destructoid - 8.5

It's a disappointing realization, but not a damning one. Far from it, actually. Remedy's keen understanding of how to make an action title shines through, and it's every bit a game that has been lovingly crafted for years. Quantum Break won't at all times feel like a game, as the player spends a fair chunk of time relegated to spectator. But, no matter which side Quantum Break is showing, it's always going to be a spectacular one.

Quantum Break isn’t a perfect game; it’s a bold experiment in how two mediums can tell a larger story, and at times it pays off. It would be foolish for every game to attempt to emulate this form of storytelling, but Quantum Break as a gaming oddity deserves attention. I wish the events of the show were more significant to the main story, but Quantum Break more than makes up for that with some of the best storytelling and gameplay Remedy has ever produced.

It's as a spectacle that Quantum Break really triumphs, a showcase of excellence on Remedy's behalf as it creates an experience that's aggressively handsome, delivered with great visual flair. When those firefights break out into noisy showers of sparks, pockets of fractured time and splinters of scenery, Quantum Break shows the magic that can happen when you give a handful of demoscene veterans a Hollywood budget.

Scratch away at that and you've got a watchable TV series wrapped around a focussed and competent game, but Remedy's keen sense of style manages to elevate Quantum Break to something just about worthwhile. Maybe it's because of how eccentric the whole enterprise is. There's never been anything like Quantum Break, and it's hard to imagine there ever being anything like it again: more often for better than for worse, Remedy's strange hybrid feels like an adventure out of its own time.

Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay leaks

April 1st is the sketchiest day of the year. No one knows what is real or not, so take what I am about to say with the largest grain of salt.

Reputable Twitter user, Shinobi602, has released some gameplay that appears to show off some of the new features and tech in EA's next entry in their massive sci-fi franchise, Mass Effect. If this gameplay is real, Mass Effect: Andromeda looks stunning! We see some of the amazing rain, particle and explosion effects as well as a jet pack for use during combat and regular gameplay!

The leak does look pretty real, the graphics are incredible and the effects are brilliant. Not to mention the characters are fully modeled and animated. It would be hard to believe someone spent the hundreds and thousands of dollars and dozens of hours as a little joke. It just wouldn't make sense. We will find out if this is real at E3 2016 in June when EA reveals their upcoming line up.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is due out sometime in 2017 but little else is known about the title.

Dark Souls III Reviews

IGN - 9.5

Dark Souls 3 lives up to the formula in some respects but falls short a little too often

At this point, most Souls players know what they're looking for in a new entry. Your personal expectations for the series will play a key part in your enjoyment of Dark Souls 3. If you play these games for the intense, controller-clenching combat and the excitement of invading other players' worlds, then there's a lot here to keep you busy and happy. But in so many important ways — its world design, its pacing, the technology powering it — Dark Souls 3 falls short of the mark. Do you play for the joy and stress of exploring dangerous, intricately crafted places full of hidden elements and endless side paths? Then I suspect you'll join me in being a little let down with the direction this sequel has gone in.

Gameinformer - 9.25

Dark Souls III successfully replicates the winning formula of the Souls series, a wondrous combination of majestic boss battles, incredible layered environments full of secrets, and precise combat that can make other action RPGs difficult to play once you’ve mastered the art. If you’ve never played the series, this is a great place to begin, offering a bit more direction in the early game before opening up. If you’ve already played the series, you can feel confident that From Software hasn’t lost its touch.

Destructoid - 8.5

If Dark Souls III truly is the last game for now, it makes perfect sense, since it's just as much of a love letter to fans as it is a culmination of the series. I may not have liked this iteration as much as the rest, but it's still streets ahead of most current action games and deserves a warm spot on your shelf by the bonfire.

Any player who’s been through this mill is prepared to die, but once more, that fantastic beacon of hope urging players to press forward and overcome each obstacle is shining as bright as ever. Because that’s what Dark Souls is all about – perishing, persevering, and prevailing.

No game series comes close to doing what Dark Souls does, and Dark Souls III has done it again.

It’s an undead favorite.

They better polish that up if that actually is footage..they have plenty of time to do so

ok here's my little review on Quantum Break. first off i will start of by saying this is the best looking game on xbox one.i mean they look real as hell for a video game.so thats a 10 in my book.second thing is the story really brings you into the gamealmost like a movie of some sort where you can change how the game is played.thats a good thing, the game play is a solid 8 out of 10. only gripe i have with this game is there's no cover system an with a game like this you really need a cover system.there's time your in a shoot out an you want your dude to bend down and he just have his body all out in the open lol like he can't be killed.other then that i mean the game is kool.you get your powers early in the game an really they just throw you into the game with out practice.the cut scences are a nice add on to the game an can be long at times but i like that about the game as i stated before it really draws you into the game.so i will give this a 8/10.

Is there any replay value?

This game needs a cover system. I don't know why they didn't just copy the Divisions system. Even a basic one would be better.

I completely agree on the cover system. I decided that I need to try and stop playing like mass effect and play like Max Payne. Man the story on the bitch is nice and the production value on the tv series is nice. I'm tripping out how the production on the series within this game is like 5 times better then the entire first season of Powers by Sony.

The way the powers work kind of remind me of mass effect 3 ... Where you can throw out powers back to back.

Side note... I fucking love remedy. I spent like 4 minutes watching a mini tv show that looked like xfiles in the first level because there I didn't want to miss anything like I missed the entire sub story from the show on the tvs in Alan wake.

Yeah this quantum break game is the shit. I had to put the sticks down because i knew if i didn't i wouldn't have got up for work on time.

Cover system is ass i will admit that. But everything else about this game is AMAZING. By far one of the best looking most realistic games I've ever seen. Game play and story hooks you in immediately. Getting your powers early on is smart! Makes game play fun and open ended. No two play throughs are the same.

I only finished act 1 and I'm loving this game.

Gears Of War 4 Launches Worldwide On October 11

In a post over at Xbox Wire, Adam Fletcher, Director of Community from the Coalition, announced the release date for Gears of War 4:

Gears fans, mark your calendars, as the next chapter in the Lancer-revving Gears of War saga is set to begin on Oct. 11 with the release of Gears of War 4.

It’s been almost a year since Gears of War 4 made its global debut at E3 2015, and today’s announcement is set to ignite a chain of upcoming revelations about what’s in store for JD Fenix and the next generation of Gears heroes.

Gears of War 4 marks the beginning of an epic new saga for one of gaming’s most celebrated franchises, as a new band of heroes rises to confront a fearsome new threat. Harkening back to the dark and intense roots of the original classic, fans can expect a familiar, yet distinct evolution of gameplay, including brutal and intimate action, a heart-pounding campaign, genre-defining multiplayer and stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 4.

Eager to get a taste of Gears of War 4 before October? Don’t miss the multiplayer beta kicking off this month!

Beginning on April 18, fans who’ve played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or Windows 10 will be able to join the beta on Xbox One, which will expand to all Xbox Live Gold members on April 25. For more information on what to expect from the beta, check out our recent announcement highlighting the full details, and stay tuned to Xbox Wire and GearsofWar.com for more exciting news in the coming weeks and months.

Gears of War 4 Will Have Split-Screen in All Modes

Rod Fergusson, head of Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition, has confirmed that the upcoming Xbox One exclusive will offer split-screen play in all modes.

Speaking to The Game Informer Show (and reported by Gamespot), Fergusson said, "any way that you can play Gears of War 4 you can play it split-screen."

However, Gears 4's usual 60 frames per second multiplayer will take a hit - in split-screen. the game drops to 30 FPS. Campaign mode will run in 30 FPS as standard.

The news follows another high-profile Xbox exclusive, Halo: 5 Guardians, dropping split-screen functionality altogether.

“The decision to remove split-screen support from Halo 5: Guardians was one of the most difficult ones we’ve ever had to make as a studio," said 343 studio head, Josh Holmes at the time it was announced, but cited resulting technological drawbacks the team wouldn't accept.

Fergusson indicated that he gets that line of thinking, but that it's not possible for a Gears game: "I understand it. It's a hard thing. It's not a free feature [...] Those are realistic development trade-offs you have to decide whether you want to support. But [co-op] defines us, we can never get rid of that."

A Gears of War 4 beta will kick off on April 18, and will run on an invite-only basis until May 1.

Just finished Act 2 this morning... DUDE my mind is blown at the production values of this tv show. It's not movie quality, but it is definitely CW and Syfy quality. There is a part of me that feels that later this year Syfy will probably partner with Microsoft and somehow turn this into a Miniseries.

you're talking about the tv show that you download? I hadn't done that yet but i will watch them eventually.

So you've been playing the game then after completing an act, downloading and watching the tv show?

Naw the episode immediately streams after Paul makes his choice at the end of the act. The episode is then based on situations from the game and then Paul's choice. The next Act starts at the end of the Episode. I think there are 4 episodes total.

I don't know why some reviewers say that your choices don't matter, because my choice had a direct effect on who I came in contact with in Act 2.

I also found out in Act 2 that there are certain things that you interact with that can cause effects on the story.

I did see where you could download the episodes, but that shit is like 75gbs. FUCK THAT....

Yeah that's bullshit everything you do changes the story.

Like when Paul makes his choice my brother chose to kill the witnesses so i chose to let em make it. In mine some parts are the same as his but there a big differences because if the actions i chose vs his

Also there are these "quantum ripples" in the game, where you do one tiny thing and then that thing is vaguely mentioned in the tv show. Like in act one, when you have a run in with the monarch guards, after killing them there's an equation written on the board. Will ends up solving the equation. When the tv show is playing out, two guys at a lunch table are talking about how the formula on the white board no one could solve was "magically" solved this morning when they came in.....

Little things....that people aren't picking up on. And another thing, collect all story narratives and explore all over n just look at everything. The more stuff you activate the more in depth the conversations are between the characters in the tv show

Can't wait for the 25th Beta.

Finally put down The division for a sec to play another act on Quantum Break. The TV show pulls you in quick. I also made some space available on my hard drive to download all of the 75 GB episodes, its worth . That streaming shit is too slow for me, breaks up the flow.

I wish they let you slowly gain your powers (like in RPG games) Gaining them so fast was a bad idea in IMO. Let the player earn it.

Story is fire, TV show fire. The first episode felt like a 24 season one episode . I was waiting for Jack Bauer to pop out lol. I wish the controls were better though, way too loose and clunky. That should've been corrected during all those delays SMH.

Microsoft needs to lock Remedy down and force them to make a Flash game with episodes tie ins lol.

I think I'm ok with get the powers at once, but I do see your point at making your earn them. I guess the the upgrade parts are where you do that. But I'm fucking hooked and I completely disagree with the reviewers who said that there isn't any replay value here. I know for a fact that I'm probably playing this at least three times based on the multiple choices you have.

But man this tv show... Has drawn me in way more then I thought. This story is fucking Flames... Probably the best story that I've seen in a video game in awhile... Man they Better not fucking mass effect 3 me on the ending though.

As far as the controls...
I think the problem is that you are playing this after you play the division. You've got use to that cover system. I finished playing Gears of War Judgment right before I started this game and I was the same way.

If you play this game like Max Payne or Alan wake then it is a lot easier. You couldn't just hide in cover on those games... You are constantly firing and moving.

Yeah I put hours in to The Division, then went right into QB. I wish QB came out before The Division.

WARNING to anyone that wants to replay Quantum Break!!!

"Just completed the game after getting nearly every collectible on normal, and after you beat the last stage, it returns you to the main menu. DO NOT HIT NEW GAME! It provides you no warning prompt the first time and it erases all your progress! I have to recollect every collectible again to get the achievement to trigger now.

Of course when I hit new game a second time it prompts the error message. Unbelievably frustrating"
