Phil Spencer responds to Lionhead closure, promises Xbox isn't going anywhere

phil_spencer1.jpg

Xbox chief Phil Spencer has moved to reassure fans concerned about the future of Xbox following yesterday's announcement that Lionhead Studios and Press Play Studios are to close.

Responding to a fan on Twitter asking him to promise that Xbox "is not going anywhere", Spencer replied: "I promise".

"I'm proud of the games our 1P Studios have shipped on XB1," he told another, "our plan is continue to build new IP and expand our franchises."

"It's impossible to go into all the detail and I apologize for that," he added when asked why the decision was made to close Lionhead. "Just know I'm committed to our 1P [first-party]."

Yesterday, Microsoft announced plans to close UK studio Lionhead and cancel development of Fable Legends. It also confirmed plans to close Max: The Curse of Brotherhood developer Press Play Studios with immediate effect.

Following the announcement, it was discovered that five further Microsoft studios, including BigPark, LXP, Function Studios, SOTA and Good Science had been removed from the Microsoft Studios website, too, prompting speculation about their future.

The website currently lists 10 active Microsoft studios and initiatives, down from the 18 listed yesterday.

UPDATE: Spencer has commented further, saying that he's "not sure I'm so loved right now".

"Thanks," he said to a fan offering words of support. "I'm not sure I'm so loved right now (not looking for sympathy), Gamer passion is strong."

Gears of War 4 stars Marcus Fenix's son

The Gears of War 4 cast has been announced in an exclusive reveal by The Coalition to Game Informer today. Gears of War 4 will be set 25 years after Gears of War 3, this means we will have an entirely new cast. Three new characters and their acting counterparts were announced. The characters are:

JD Fenix

JD will be the main protagonist for the game. JD is described as an idealist who ran away from home to join the COG militia, after a classified mission he went AWOL. Players will learn more about JD and the incident throughout the game. JD will be played by Liam McIntyre who is best known for playing Spartacus in the Starz television show after actor Andy Whitfield passed away from cancer. McIntyre also played Weather Wizard on The CW’s The Flash. McIntyre said this about JD “It's kind of terrifying, because I get to be the lead in a new era of Gears, which is unbelievable, amazing, and exciting. I'm the legacy, because my dad is Marcus Fenix. JD's a soldier and a bit of a freedom fighter, and in his heart he's a bit of a renegade. He's different from Marcus, but he's still that heroic archetype.”

Kait Diaz

Kait Diaz was born and raised in the walled city-states protecting humanity, her parents were leaders of a group known as the Outsiders. Her father died of a tragic death years ago. Kait isn’t familiar with the workings of COG, but she is a capable survivalist who forms a friendship with JD. Kait will be played by Laura Bailey, who you may know from her extensive roles in Halo 5 as Spartan Olympia Vale, Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft and Kid Trunks in Dragon Ball Z. Bailey said this about Kait “What's interesting about her is that she grew up as an Outsider, so she's been away from this military environment that the boys grew up in. It's fun to do her dialogue because she approaches it from a different place. She has a less technical approach to everything she does because she's never experienced anything like this. She's a great entry point into this world, because she doesn't know everything about it either.”

Delmont “Del” Walker

Delmont “Del” Walker is described as an ex-COG soldier who was orphaned as a child. Del became friends with JD at boarding school. When JD ran off to join the COG, Del followed. Del was involved with the incident that sent both of them out to Sera to look for refuge among the Outsiders. Del remains loyal to JD. Del will be played by Eugene Byrd, who recently played as Marcus “Boone” Boomer in last year’s Battlefield Hardline. Byrd also plays as reoccurring member Andy Diggle in The CW’s Arrow. Byrd said this about Del “Del is cool. I had to play up the nuance because the friendship between him and JD meant a lot, so getting to know Liam McIntyre and actually becoming friends with him helped us play together. I think Del wasn't a clean slate, so I had to give him a bit of a backstory, but then we were able to evolve it. We're actually building it while we're doing it”

Are you excited about this? Let us know.

Played by: Eugene Byrd, who recently played Marcus "Boomer" Boone in last year's shooter Battlefield Hardline. He also appears as a recurring cast member on television shows like Arrow and Bones.

Byrd on Del: "Del is cool. I had to play up the nuance because the friendship between him and JD meant a lot, so getting to know [Liam McIntyre] and actually becoming friends with him helped us play together. Major Nelson Speaks out on Xbox Live Downtime Compensation

xbox-one.png

Within the last few weeks, Xbox Live has been experiencing frequent issues with various online functions, namely signing into the service and staying online. Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Microsoft’s Director of Programming, is now saying he will discuss compensation for Live users with the Xbox team.

“I’ve taken some of the more thoughtful comments and shared them with a few folks on the Xbox team to make them aware of this request,” Hryb wrote in response to a Reddit thread asking about compensation for the outages. “That’s about all I’ve got right now – but when I am back in the office I am going to stop by and chat 1:1 with some folks about this as well.”

Xbox Live went down just earlier today after a weekend of technical issues, a continuing headache for users. While Hryb’s statement is no confirmation, the team is aware of the community’s concerns and players may see something for their troubles in the future.

Is The Division one of those online only games where it always has to be online to play?

Yeah, but we have BGOL squads so you can team up and meet some of the nameless faceless people here. I played with ArtistMonk and Slym and they were really cool. I'll be back on tonight. I missed last night because of a damn "date night"...needy goddamn women.

The Division isn't ya father's Destiny that's for damn sure the enemies are tough as fuck every mission feels like a doing a raid... I got shitty guns so I'm not even touching that Dark Zone lol

Dude it took an hour to finish a mission last night and i was with a team.. Well everybody left after all the dying 'til it was just two of us but damn i need some gear and weapons but can you earn money if shit keep kicking ya ass LOL

This happened to us last night. We played a mission that ended lasting about 2 hours, because we kept getting killed until it was 2 of us left and fought until we finshed. This is a great game on an off day, or weekend but during a work week? You'll be up until one...we had group members crying about work in the morning:roflmao:

General RAAM from Gears of War coming to Killer Instinct

Hot on the heels of the addition of Arbiter from Halo and Rash from Battletoads to fighting game Killer Instinct comes word that General RAAM from Gears of War is set to make a playable appearance.

Shoryuken reports General RAAM and Mira will join the game during season three, which kicks off later this month. It published a couple of images leaked to the website via an in-development build of the game.

Mira was a bit-part player in Killer Instinct's story. She's Maya's late twin sister. How the story explains her comeback is yet to be revealed.

General RAAM's appearance will perhaps need a more elaborate explanation. But this is Killer Instinct, remember. Story doesn't really matter.

We're sort of getting a hint of Microsoft All-Stars about Killer Instinct. Who should they add next?

Peter Molyneux?
