Best Buy offering Xbox One gift card bundle and laptop for $290

Update: It sold out within minutes.

Best Buy may have just put up the deal of the century. They're selling a bundle which includes an Xbox One, a game and a new Windows 10 laptop all for $290. That's right, just $290. If that's not a great deal, I don't know what is. Getting this deal saves you over $500. You can take a look at the deal here.

The Lenovo G70-80 17.3" laptop is quite a capable device and has an Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. It comes with Windows 10 Home edition as well. If you're in the market for a new machine you might want to take advantage of this deal. The best part is that getting this laptop will let you stream Xbox One games to the computer. In my opinion this is the ultimate package when it comes to gamers looking to purchase a new Xbox One.

Arbiter's Stage in Killer Instinct Pushes Game's Scripting "To the Limit"
Get the scoop on the character's weapons, armor, stage, and more.

Halo anti-hero character Arbiter is coming to Microsoft's fighting game Killer Instinct for its upcoming third season next month. This much was confirmed earlier this month. Now, as part of a blog post published Saturday, 343 Industries shared new details about the character's weapons, armor, stage, and more. Among other things, it is mentioned that Arbiter's stage pushes the game's scripting "to the limit." More details follow below.

First, his weapons and items. These include his trademark energy sword, as well as a Type-51 Carbine, and plasma grenades. Below is a full rundown of these, as written by 343.

Type-51 Carbine

  • The Type-51 Carbine holds 18 rounds of radioactive ammo and fires three-shot bursts. Once the magazine has been emptied, gunshots are replaced by melee attacks.
Plasma Grenade

  • Sticky anti-personnel plasma grenade that detonates after a three-second delay. Throwing distance can be changed by pressing Forward or Backwards. Grenade blast can harm both players. The Arbiter carries three grenades, replacement grenades are salvaged over time.
Energy Sword

  • The Arbiter carries a master-crafted Covenant Energy Sword or Thel 'Vadam's personal blade--the vicious Prophets' Bane.
Combat Evolved

  • Arbiter can tack on a Plasma Grenade or fire his Type-51 Carbine to deal additional damage after performing a Throw, Energy Sword strike, or any Ender.
343 went on to say that the team at Killer Instinct developer Iron Galaxy did an "incredible job" bringing Arbiter to life in the fighting game--not such a simple task.

"One of the most important aspects of making the Killer Instinct Arbiter 'feel' right is by ensuring his move-set and combat style make sense for a warrior of his caliber, his size, and his weapons," 343 said. "Special care was taken by all parties involved to make sure that everything from the Energy Sword swings and Carbine shots, to the Plasma Grenades and cloaked assaults, felt like you were controlling an Elite."

In terms of armor, Arbiter will by default wear his Kaidon armor, as seen in Halo 5: Guardians (above). This showcases a "classic Sangheili design," but players can also unlock new color combinations.

Other Arbiter armor includes:

Halo 2 Arbiter

Combat

Storm

Ranger

Commander

Zealot

Ascetic

Finally, 343 also showed off concept art for Arbiter's awesome-looking Killer Instinct stage, which was seen seen in a recent trailer. The stage is called Arena of Judgment and it is set near the ruins of Nuusra.

"In the distant past it was a place of discussion and debates on matters of Sangheili honor, hosting Kaidons and Arbiters competing in a battleground of ideas and philosophy. But time is cruel, and now this forum hosts a different kind of judgment," reads a line from the description.

The stage is dynamic, with the war between the Swords of Sanghelios and Covenant playing out in the background as you play your own match. According to 343's Kenneth Peters, the stage pushes Killer Instinct's scripting capabilities "to the limit."

"Pushing the scripting capabilities of Killer Instinct to the limit we see Elites fighting and dying, war engines spending their last energies, and fierce battles for aerial dominance that end in vanquished craft careering out-of-control," Peters explained.

Its color scheme, vehicles, and sound effects should feel familiar to Halo fans, Peters said. Additionally, 343 teased that this stage contains "more than a couple" Halo Easter eggs to be discovered.

Arbiter will be available as part of Killer Instinct's third season, which will kick off in March. The character was first teased in January, during the Killer Instinct World Cup at PAX South. Arbiter will be joined in Season 3 by Kim Wu, Rash from Battletoads, and another mystery character, believed to be Tusk.

343 teased that more details on Killer Instinct's Arbiter will be shared during the Halo World Championship finals during the weekend of March 18-20.

The new season will also bring with it numerous character tweaks and rebalances, as well as some visual improvements. Killer Instinct was first released in 2013 on Xbox One, and is scheduled to be released for PC this March. The PC version of the game will be exclusive to Windows 10.

Phil Spencer signals Xbox One hardware upgrades
Xbox chief drops extraordinary hints about console's future 'innovation'

XBOX_EVENT_0447.0.JPG

During his Xbox Spring Showcase event keynote last week, Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer talked about future of "hardware innovation" for the console, similar to the ways PCs evolve.

In a speech to reporters, he said that the Xbox One could see a future in which it is upgraded, rather than replaced by new consoles. Spencer was talking about how Microsoft has sought to align its Windows 10 and Xbox One development activities under the internal "Universal Windows Platform" while offering backwards compatibility for many Xbox 360 games, now playable on Xbox One. He was addressing the concerns of some Xbox One owners that the exclusives destined for that console are appearing on PC, thus eroding the value of owning a console.

But he went much further than merely outlining internal strategies for cross-platform efficiency. He argued that consoles could and should be upgradeable, like PCs, and that the model of generation shifts may be coming to an end.

"We see on other platforms whether it be mobile or PC that you get a continuous innovation that you rarely see on console," he said. "Consoles lock the hardware and the software platforms together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out for seven or so years, while other ecosystems are getting better, faster, stronger. And then you wait for the next big step function.

"When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform."

Spencer said that Xbox One owners could be offered optional hardware upgrades in the future, that allows the console to keep up with emerging and competing technologies. Such a move would also suggest an end for new console launches.

"We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago but I can still see the best 4K games come out and my library is always with me. Hardware innovation continues while the software innovation is able to take advantage and I don't have to jump a generation and lose everything that I played on before."

It's an extraordinary suggestion. Unfortunately, he wasn't prepared to go into any more details. In an interview later in the day, Polygon asked him to be more specific about what exactly he had meant. Spencer replied that he did not want to "announce our road map for hardware," and would not give any details. But what he did say is definitely worth hearing. Here's the full transcript of his reply:

"We look at these other ecosystems out there like mobile, tablet and PC and we see that they have a very continuous evolution cycle in hardware, whereas between console generations most of the evolution is making it cheaper and potentially making it smaller.

Both are meaningful but don't make the games play any better. If you look at PC specifically and see the evolution that happens there, there's no reason why console can't ride that same curve.

I look at the ecosystem that a console sits in and I think that it should have the capability of more iteration on hardware capability. Sony is doing this with VR and adding VR capabilities mid-cycle to the PlayStation 4 and they are doing that by adding another box. I don't mean that as a negative. But it's not changing what the core console is about.

For consoles in general it's more important now than it's ever been, because you have so many of these other platforms that are around. It used to be that when you bought your console you were way ahead of the price performance curve by so much, relative to a PC. But now PCs are inexpensive and your phones are getting more and more capable.

I still think a console is the best price to performance deal that is out there but when you look at the evolution ... I'm not going to announce our road map for hardware ... but what I wanted to say on stage for people when they see this vision of ours and question our commitment to console I want to make sure that people see that what we are doing enables us to be more committed to what consoles are about than we've ever been and innovate more consistently than we ever have. That's the key for me."

New Party Chat Features, Ability To Buy Xbox 360 Games, Game DVR Settings Coming To Xbox One

Backward%20Compatibility610.jpg

Xbox One has been steadily pushing through new features since its launch in 2013, and the next round of updates looks to further synergize the experience for those who like the backward compatibility functionality the console added last year. The update, which is hitting for members of the Xbox One Preview Program today, is adding some highly requested features.

One of the biggest additions to this update is the ability to purchase Xbox 360 games that have been enabled for backward compatibility with Xbox One in the Xbox One game store. Previously, players who wanted to buy an Xbox 360 game that worked with Xbox One had to do so either on the Xbox 360 itself or through a web browser. Now, a separate section of the Xbox One still will display, showing Xbox 360 games that are able to be run on Xbox One.

Parties on Xbox Live are also getting a boost up to 16 people, which is another step up from the 12-person parties Xbox One has featured since last fall. This is also being added to the Xbox app on mobile devices.

16-person%20Party%20Chat-610.jpg

New party chat settings will also be arriving on Xbox One, as players will be able to opt to output party chat to your headset and speakers simultaneously. In addition, if you’re in a party and streaming using the Twitch app, you'll be able to broadcast your party chat over the stream. To this point, players streaming while in a party have only been able to broadcast their side of the conversation. Players in the party must accept an invitation to have their voice sent over the stream.

Since launch, saying “Xbox Record That” or hitting the “Record That” button on the system menu has recorded a game clip of a fixed length. That length is currently set at 30 seconds, but with the new update, players can specify how long they want Game DVR to record. The options available to players will be 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 45 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes. If players decide to record longer clips, they can still trim and edit the recorded gameplay to be the length they desire.

Game%20DVR%20Duration610.jpg

Accessing your achievements in-game is becoming quicker, as it is being added to the Xbox One guide sidebar. Located between the party and messages icon when you bring up the guide sidebar menu, the new achievements submenu allows you to view and track your achievements on the current game without having to load the achievements app.

The social aspect of Xbox One is also getting a few new additions, as videos will now be playable directly from the social feed and Xbox 360 achievement are now enabled to appear in Xbox One, Xbox app, and Windows 10 PC activity feeds.

Other changes include the ability to jump directly from game hubs to URL link and YouTube videos, compare your avatar with friends’ avatars, and a new reputation rating system that only displays reputation remarks for a player if they have been rated poorly. These updates are scheduled to come to Preview members on Xbox One today and Xbox app beta testers starting tomorrow.

Our Take
While Xbox One certainly still has its share of problems major updates like this one show that the company is working diligently to solve the issues. Things like being able to purchase Xbox 360 games directly from the Xbox One store or being able to integrate party chat into Twitch streams are things that will make the Xbox One experience a more enjoyable one. Upping the party size to 16 could be a risky move with how troubled the party system on Xbox One has been since it launched, but it has made marked improvements over the past several months. There are still several things that Xbox One could stand to improve on, but the company is showing the initiative.

Mass Effect: Andromeda will be out Q1 2017

No Mass Effect: Andromeda this year. EA has said in an investor call that the fourth main Mass Effect game will be released during the first quarter of 2017, which spans January to end of March.

That period represents the fourth quarter of EA's financial year - which begins April, ends March - and blockbusters earmarked for this period tend to come out as close to the end of March as possible. This allows maximum time in development while keeping the release within the financial year.

Mind you, Mass Effect 2 came out at the end of January and Mass Effect 3 at the beginning of March, so there's hope for a marginally earlier launch.

"We've got a great year ahead," said EA's chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen during a Morgan Stanley conference presentation - quote picked up by members of NeoGAF.

"We've got our Battlefield [5] first-person shooter game coming in the third quarter, and our third-party title that Respawn, our partner, built, it's called Titanfall [2].

"We have our Mirror's Edge [Catalyst] runner game this first quarter, and then we have Mass Effect [Andromeda], which is a sci-fi action game, in our fourth quarter."

Mass Effect: Andromeda was officially announced at E3 last year with a holiday 2016 release date, so this technically represents a delay. But with Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 5 both lining up for autumn 2016 - presumably Titanfall in Sep/Oct and Battlefield in November against Call of Duty - it makes sense to move Andromeda away.

Mass Effect: Andromeda tells a story in an entirely new area of space, and one entirely separate from commander Shepard. But there's still a lot we don't know about it. We cobbled together everything we do know in a separate article (and video, below).

Missed my workout today and I thought that I would try Xbox fitness for the first time in between house of cards episode.

Microsoft cancels Fable Legends, may shut down Lionhead Studios

Fable_Legends.0.jpg

Microsoft is canceling development of Fable Legends, Lionhead Studios' Xbox One and Windows PC game, and is "in discussions" to close the Fable developer, according to a statement released by Hanno Lemke, general manager of Microsoft Studios Europe.

Press Play Studios, the Danish developer behind Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, is also set to close, Lemke said.

Here's Lemke's statement, posted to the official Xbox website:

Today, I have some difficult changes to announce that affect some of our Microsoft Studios teams and projects in the UK and Denmark.

After much consideration we have decided to cease development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees about the proposed closure of Lionhead Studios in the UK. Additionally, we will close Press Play Studios in Denmark, and sunset development on Project Knoxville.

These have been tough decisions and we have not made them lightly, nor are they a reflection on these development teams - we are incredibly fortunate to have the talent, creativity and commitment of the people at these studios. The Lionhead Studios team has delighted millions of fans with the Fable series over the past decade. Press Play imbued the industry with a unique creative spirit behind games like Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Kalimba, which both captured passionate fans. These changes are taking effect as Microsoft Studios continues to focus its investment and development on the games and franchises that fans find most exciting and want to play.

I speak for all of Xbox when I say that despite this news, we remain committed to the development communities in the UK and Europe, and Xbox will continue to support new IP and originality in the games we offer on our platforms, whether they're AAA blockbusters like Quantum Break from Remedy, adventurous new IPs like Sea of Thieves from Rare, or unique new creations from independent developers like Moon Studios with Ori.

We have nothing but heart-felt thanks for the members of Lionhead and Press Play for their contributions to Xbox and gaming. We are committed to working closely with those affected by today's news to find them new opportunities at Xbox, or partnering with the broader development community to help place them in jobs elsewhere in the games industry should they desire.

Fable Legends was announced in 2013, and was previously scheduled for release during the fourth quarter of 2015. The game's open beta was expected to launch this spring. The free-to-play spinoff of the Fable franchise was intended to be cross-play compatible between Windows 10 and Xbox One. It was the only title officially in development at Lionhead, which Microsoft acquired in 2006.

Lionhead was founded in 1996. The studio's first release was 2001 strategy game Black & White. The developer has focused mainly on the Fable series since 2008's Fable 2.

Microsoft acquired Copenhagen-based Press Play in 2012. The studio released Max: The Curse of Brotherhood the following year. The studio released Kalimba (aka Project Totem) in 2014, and was working on Project Knoxville, a Hunger Games-style multiplayer action-survival game.

Yea Fable Legends was very bland. It would have taken years to get it to a point where it was fun.

I do now dude. I'm an opening or closing gym person so I can avoid beefing with meathead ass fools hogging all the weights. I get it bro, you're strong, can I use those 40s for a quick minute?

It is actually a legitimate workout. I bought the 90x and insanity versions for Xbox one. They both cost the amount of a game. The free shit on there is actually really really good. I adjust my kinect to allow it see my full body. I knocked out a quick 30 again between episode 5 and 6 of house of cards. I don't really think you can beat this type of deal for an intense 30 to 40 minute cardio routine.

The only problems that I found dealt with any floor exercises. It doesn't read burpees that well so I got deducted points because it didn't think I did the routine.

I've been wanting to work out more. I'll have to/ download the app. Honestly didn't know about it.

Yeah it is fucking hidden in the Games for Gold section. You need to scroll down to the bottom and then pin it to your home page. I think there are about 15 free workouts.

This is just fucking sad man. Since Phil Spencer has taken over, this is the first real time that I can say that he has dropped the ball. I don't know what they fuck they were doing with Fable and I agree Fable 3 wasn't up the standards of 2 and 1.... but it was still pretty good.

I'm off of work tomorrow, and I'll be on the Division at 12:01 EST. If we're starting Quaid's Calvary, I'll be online. Phantic215 on Xbox one

Microsoft is banking everything on Halo, Gears, and Forza. Halo doesn't sell like it use to and they are hoping that Gears 4 is gonna sell and get people to buy a xbox. Quantum Break looks great so far and maybe Sea of Thieves will surprise everyone and be a hit. I don't think Crackdown will come out this year unless it's shown and playable at E3. Microsoft should combine Lionhead and Press Play and let them create something new instead of using an existing IP.
