Mad Max: Reviews

MadMax_CarCombat610.jpg

Polygon - 5.0

Mad Max is a shallow, forgettable experience

Those inevitable wins felt empty, and that's really the biggest problem with Mad Max. The film franchise has always transcended the summer blockbuster genre, providing worlds and characters and scenarios that have stuck in my mind. Mad Max the game is the opposite; it's got chase scenes and big explosions and bloody fights, but nothing to remember it for. In spite of some annoying technical issues and questionable design, Mad Max is functional, but it's fluff, plain and simple.

IGN - 8.4

Gamesradar 4/5

Perhaps the biggest failing here, though, is Warner’s apparent lack of faith in what it has (hello minimal advertising, last minute review code and that suicidal MGS5-matching release date). This may not be breaking any new ground but it’s a satisfying experience with plenty to do. By the time I'd finished the main story I'd clocked 38 hours and apparently completed 39% (!). The main story, despite its mundane crux, does ultimately deliver a worthy climax (it'd be spoilers to say more) before returning you to a still daunting map full of bases, side quests, diversions and everything else to mop up. The plot might barely exist for the majority of the game, while direction and focus takes its time to come together, but none of that matters. Just being in the being the world is enough. You are Mad Max, a violent stranger roaring across the wasteland in a cloud of dust and violence.

Gamespot - 6.0

Some interesting characters, impressive environments and great car combat draw you in and incentivise you to keep going, but it's when you get out of the car that things fall apart. Mad Max's combat system is too dumbed down to enjoy, and repetitive activities such as searching for scrap and invading small enemy camps gets old fast. Mad Max offers some great experiences, but for a game that tries to impose the realities of survival on you, it does a poor job of following up on this pressure. Mad Max is too focused on providing you with an open-world that's filled with missions, and not focused enough on making those missions worth your time.

Gameinformer - 7.5

Max's adventure inevitably leads to a showdown with Scrotus, but as the story concludes you are left wondering what, if anything, was gained in this pursuit. At the end of the day, Max overtook some bases, ran a couple hundred cars off the road, met some forgettable characters, and buried his fist into the sunburnt skin of the villainous locals. Was it worth the effort? That ultimately depends on how much fun you had in performing these basic, repetitious open-world activities.

Mixed reviews for Mad Max, huh? I'll still buck with it.

I like the beat 'em up style melee fighting like this and Batman and Sleeping Dogs.

This shit got me hyped.

This is our first good look at the new game, and it looks like a lot of fun.

You’ve got a photo-realistic Nathan Fillion, which may come as a surprise.

anigif_optimized-24664-1441065920-4.gif

Unless, of course, you’ve played any of the Halo games since Halo 3: ODST.

You’ve got skydiving super soldiers.

anigif_optimized-26564-1441065713-3.gif

And you’ve got guns. A lot of guns.

And swords.

This guy can punch the ground really hard, which looks awesome.

Here’s some first opinions from BuzzFeed Tech’s resident video game critic and Halo 4 enthusiast, Joe Bernstein.

To the extent that the computer-generated visual representation of plate-armored future soldiers with jetpacks plunging through an atmosphere as hovercraft explode around them in order to land on an ice planet where they will do battle with laser-sword-wielding aliens as a consequence of a never-ending war between space civilizations that may or may not result in the destruction of the universe must invariably please me, a conventional man who came of age in the brief period in which science fiction was codified as and confined to a series of marketable tropes for which I now feel a longing, as if for simpler times, I am pleased by the “opening cinematic” for the new Halo game, which is called Halo 5: Guardians.

What is an “opening cinematic?” First of all, it’s an incorrect usage, because “cinematic” is an adjective that modifies nothing. It refers in this context to the part of the game that comes at the start, which looks better than the rest of the game, which the player cannot control, and which when done with skill, establishes the mood, themes, and narrative of the game to follow, not unlike the cover of a heavy metal album. Many bad heavy metal albums have good, evocative cover art. So do many good ones, although it’s worth asking whether our retrospective knowledge of the quality of the album makes us read quality into that cover art. Who knows?

In this case, the “opening cinematic” establishes that humans and a race of comfortingly generic aliens called “The Covenant” still cannot get along, that someone of importance must be rescued, and that 343 Industries, the Microsoft nursery into which Bungie, which created the Halo series nearly 15 years ago, placed their enormously profitable baby, has not upset the cradle. What more can you ask for? It’s the fifth one! It’s loud and pretty and robust! People will be pleased.

Forza Motorsport 6 - Reviews

forza-6-review-screen-1.0.jpg

Destructoid - 9.5

For me though, it was enough to outright bring me back into the racing fold. I found myself racing for hours, racking up credits, ferociously buying new cars to add to my garage, and cursing at my friend's Drivatars. Forza 6 is the new king of simulation racing.

With the loss of some of its personality, Forza Motorsport 6 sometimes feels like a little less than the sum of many much improved parts, and there are certain quality-of-life changes that feel increasingly overdue. But these are only distractions, bumps in the road that make Forza feel "just" great when looked at from a distance. And in the playing, Turn 10 feels like it's found its line even more effectively.

EGM - 9.5

Forza Motorsport 6 is a welcome shot in the arm for the series. Easily the best entry the franchise has produced, Forza 6 introduces tons of new online and offline gameplay that should make players want to stay in the driver’s seat for as long as possible this fall.

http://www.egmnow.com/articles/reviews/forza-motorsport-6-review/
GameInformer - 7.75/10

It's not a contradiction that Forza 6 is as fun as it is disappointing. Its faults and omissions do not make it a bad game or one that veers dramatically from the franchise's path. But what exactly is the series' philosophy? We've seen the career mode change from iteration to iteration, with the developer unable to define where it wants to go and therefore build upon a foundation in successive years. Turn 10 talks about its passion for cars, and that's evident on the track, but players have to feel it elsewhere, too.

The Verge

It is beautiful, extremely deep, and has enough modes and features to keep you entertained forever. (I haven’t even mentioned the multiplayer modes, including Forza 5’s "Rivals" and full-fledged leagues that are matched to your skill level.) If you liked Forza 5, you will love 6. Heck, even if you disliked 5 there’s a good chance you’ll like 6, if for no other reason than the fact that it’s the new standard-bearer for graphics realism on the Xbox One. As I said from the top: just buy it.

http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/8/9271983/forza-motorsport-6-review
USGamer - 5/5

As technically polished and fully-featured as any racing game out there, Forza Motorsport 6 transports you to an incredibly realistic racing world where there's a huge breadth of choice in terms of cars, tracks and types of driving experience. Pretty much whatever you're in the mood for, Forza Motorsport 6 has you covered.

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/forza-motorsport-6-xbox-one-review
GamesRadar - 3/5

This is a true showcase for Xbox One in every area except the racing. Inconsistent difficulty, random payouts and way too many dull events seriously spoil the party.

Konami has alerted users that there is a game-breaking bug in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain affecting all platforms. The good news is that it is avoidable, the bad news is that the conditions for creating the problem aren’t obscure at all.

If you use Quiet as your buddy in mission 29 or 42, there is a chance that your game progress will be inhibited entirely. In the interest of our extremely spoiler sensitive readers, we won’t tell you how many possible buddies there are, but it isn’t a lot.

Konami does not explicitly say that a patch is in progress to fix this problem. Further announcements are expected. As soon as we know how and when the publisher plans to address this, we’ll update you.

We’ve reached out to Konami for any additional details.

Update: Konami's European Twitter account has put a finer point on the problem. If you use Quiet in either of these missions, you may find yourself with a corrupted save file.

We are getting ready for the release of the New Xbox One Experience to members of the Xbox One Preview Program as Mike Ybarra shared yesterday on Xbox Wire. When it launches in November the New Xbox One Experience includes a completely redesigned Home, fast access to a brand new guide, new Community section, revamped OneGuide and more. But just like any other system update, we want to do this with the help and feedback of our fans. Our team will be working to troubleshoot and polish the updated features until its release in November and we’re letting Preview members decide if they’d like to opt in or out of participating in the early look of some of the initial features.

home_hero_preview_majornelson_gamerpic_withgold_v1.png

Here’s how it works:

*We will roll this update out over time to Preview members who opt in for it, starting with a set of Preview members who have historically submitted the most feedback. Our goal is to start with a group, get feedback on a set of features, then roll out to larger groups for additional feedback over time. It will not roll out to everyone at the same time. We’ll also be adding new features over time as we get closer to launch.
*If you’re a Preview member, you’ll get an invitation sent to you in an Xbox Live message.

*From the invitation, launch the Xbox Preview Dashboard and select the registration option.

*You can then opt-in by selecting “Preview – New Xbox One Experience.”

*If you don’t want to participate in this preview update, you will continue to receive “regular” Preview Program updates going forward. It will not remove you from the Xbox Preview Program altogether.

*Over the next several weeks, new builds will regularly roll out to those who opt in, and our engineering team will work to improve the features and fix any bugs they identify during the preview testing.

We’ll release the New Xbox One Experience to all Preview members in waves following the initial opt in period so hang tight if you aren’t in the first few groups to get access. And of course, the whole reason we’ve opened up the Preview Program has been to gather your feedback and give you the opportunity to shape the future of Xbox One. Please, keep it coming and stay tuned for more news about the New Xbox One Experience. Thanks for all of your support.

Exclusive: Talks taking place Our industry sources claim that Microsoft is seriously talking to AMD about buying the chipmaker. The pair have been in talks for a while, but we are unsure if the deal is happening or when something will be announced.

It is no secret that AMD's CPU roadmap is hardly competitive. From late 2015 and through most of 2016 the business has been rubbish. The hope of Zen cores being successful is AMD's only option for survival. Microsoft has a lot of cash in the bank and has a place for AMD under its wing.

In case that Microsoft does acquire AMD, as we suggested a few months back, it will control the development of the next generation console chip for its future Xbox and it would be able to create decent GPUs to promote its DirectX 12 and beyond. Of course Microsoft would have to compete with Nvidia. Linux fans of AMD GPUs would not be too happy about it, although Redmond has been getting more open source friendly lately.

When it comes to CPUs, the future Zen derivative could end up in the future Surface, you know the tablet that iPad Pro copied the form factor, the cover keyboard and the pen. AMD has a server division as well as computational division, everything that Microsoft uses.

The fact that Raja Koduri, a man behind cool things at ART X and ATI Radeon R300 now runs Radeon Technology Group could mean that the company might be acquired in pieces too. We always suggested that one of the solutions is that AMD sells off GPU business to a company that would licence it back to AMD for its APU products.

Our well informed industry sources suggest that Intel is interested in the acquisition of AMD. Before you blast us with your comments, the world changed a few years back and Intel is not a monopoly anymore. Apple has quite big of a stake with iPads and companies like Samsung have their own SoCs that are used for their tablets and phones. Qualcomm and MediaTek got stronger as well. In this changed world Intel would have a chance to acquire AMD if it really wanted.

Desktop, Server, Notebooks will survive but some of these market segments are simply becoming less relevant than five years ago. Yes, the world has changed.
