Celebrate Gaming with April’s Double Games with Gold Month

gwg.jpg

You might think April’s the perfect time to joke around – but we have no intention of doing that here at Xbox. Instead, we want to take a moment to appreciate you, the Xbox gamer. Over the course of the Games with Gold program, more than 100 million games have been downloaded, with over 5 billion Gamerscore earned. That’s countless hours in the shoes of iconic heroes like Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher 2, Noble Team from Halo Reach and many others all free with your Xbox Live Gold membership.

Above all, we want to celebrate our fantastic Xbox Live community this April, and that’s why we’re so pleased to announce that Games with Gold will offer double the free games for April That means Xbox One gamers get two awesome new titles, and Xbox 360 gamers get a whopping four games! So invite your friends and clear your calendar for gaming! Here’s what we’ve got:

* Pool Nation FX ($9.99 ERP): Available all month on Xbox One
* Child of Light ($14.99 ERP): Available all month on Xbox One
* Gears of War: Judgment ($19.99 ERP): Available from April 1-15 on Xbox 360
* Terraria ($14.99 ERP): Available from April 1-15 on Xbox 360
* Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag ($29.99 ERP): Available from April 16-31 on Xbox 360
* Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel ($19.99 ERP): Available from April 16-31 on Xbox 360

In the first part of the month, Xbox 360 gamers get the Gears of War: Judgment, as well as the open-world Roguelike Terraria. Gears of War: Judgment takes players back to the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day, the defining event of the Gears of War universe. The fate of the world rests on the shoulders of a young COG lieutenant, Damon Baird, and his team – Kilo Squad. In addition to an intense campaign that pits you against a horrifying new enemy, Gears of War: Judgment also introduces two class-based multiplayer modes, OverRun and Survival that add an exciting twist for fans of great cooperative multiplayer gaming.

On the other side of the coin, Terraria is a seemingly peaceful little romp through a limitless sandbox world, in which you must guide your alter ego to survival by exploiting their environment. Dig for metals, craft with what you discover, build incredible dwellings, and battle enemies of all shapes and sizes in Terraria’s seemingly endless possibilities. Work together with your friends to build your personal fortress then turn on PvP to either duke it out or takedown bosses in co-op.

Later in the month, Xbox 360 gets two more titles: the co-op shooter Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel, and the historical stealth-action epic Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. If you haven’t played it yet, Black Flag is a swashbuckling fantasy set in the Caribbean during the Age of Sail, which adds ship-to-ship combat and plenty of exploration to the Assassin’s Creed stealth-and-action recipe. Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel is a third-person shooter that focuses primarily on cooperative gameplay. It pits you and a buddy against a ruthless drug cartel called La Guadaña, in a pulse-pounding series of missions that see the two of you face off against a literal army – and live to tell the tale.

For Xbox One, Games with Gold offers two excellent games in April: Child of Light and Pool Nation FX. Nominated for “Best Overall Game of 2014” by IGN, Child of Light is an RPG inspired by fairy tales. The story takes us on the coming-of-age journey of Aurora, the daughter of a duke, who is transported to the fantastic world of Lemuria. During your journey, you’ll meet enemies in classic turn-based combat, solve puzzles, and search for mysteries.

Pool Nation FX is a slick new take on the billiards genre, offering photo-realistic graphics, an absolutely spot-on physics engine, 12 different rule sets including the exclusive Trickshot Editor and the unique rule set customization tool, for ultimate personalization; alongside all the learning aids and professional difficulty levels you could want to help polish your game. Plus, it’s got online multiplayer, so you can take your skills worldwide.

This April is about celebrating great games played by the greatest fans in the world – and we’ve given you the ammo to do that. Now get out there and start playing! Check out the full details on our Games with Gold program, and make sure you get in on the action while you can!

Titles are available as free downloads for a limited time, for qualifying paid Xbox Live Gold members in all markets where Xbox Live is available. Some regions may offer different titles depending on market availability. See Major Nelson’s blog for additional details.

You may have noticed a few new features that rolled out to preview over the weekend, including game hub links and more detailed achievement notifications. Now this week, we’re bringing even more features to Xbox One in Preview, making it easier to keep in touch with friends on Xbox One or Xbox 360.

Check out the list below for features in the April preview update that are starting to roll out tonight:

  • Voice messages – Xbox One preview program members will be able to compose and playback voice messages in the messages app when snapped on Xbox One. Quickly and easily record audio to send to your friends or others through your snapped messages app accessed through a simple quick double tap of the Xbox button. Additionally, voice messages can be exchanged between Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles.

  • Dedicated servers for party chat – We’re enhancing party chat with dedicated chat relay servers that will enable Xbox One owners that may have historically had NAT issues to party chat more reliably. Parties where players are unable to form direct peer-to-peer connections for party chat will automatically leverage dedicated server infrastructure to relay traffic. This service is only enabled for parties where one or more members are previewing the April system update.

  • What’s On – The Xbox engineering team is continuing to experiment with the What’s On area, which highlights popular videos, movies, TV shows and game broadcasts. We’re continuing to test different experiences for preview members in the U.S. and this month, the preview of this feature is being expanded to Canada and the UK as well.
Keep sending us your feedback and we’ll keep working on bringing you the latest and greatest features on Xbox One.

Epix is now on Xbox One. That sounds simple enough, but now try saying it five times in a row, as fast as you can. Yeah, that's what we thought. It might be difficult to say, but it's definitely true: Epix, the movie and TV streaming app from Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM and Viacom, is out today on Xbox One. Epix specializes in movies, concerts and comedy specials, and it's available from most cable companies in the US. It's already out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Roku, Android and iOS devices, among others. Epix promised its app would show up on Microsoft's newest console all the way back in March 2014, and almost exactly one year later, here we are. It's sort of like HBO Go on the PS4, but not as many people were waiting for it.

Ever wanted to learn a language on your Xbox? Well, now may be your chance, as the popular language learning tool Rosetta Stone has just announced an app for the Xbox One.

Available with English and Spanish options, the app will allow players to explore different virtual locations where they can practice speaking with characters in their chosen language and play various games. From Rosetta Stone:
"You'll explore several locations in the Discovery Zone and chat with the characters you find there. In the Training Zone, you'll solidify the concepts you encountered with study recommendations, cultural tips, phrase books, and of course, more games! Keep track of your achievements, and keep practicing until you get a perfect score. With Rosetta Stone's proven technology-based immersion method in a video-game interface, who knew language learning could be so fun?"
Overall, this looks like a fun way to take on the challenge of learning a new language by bringing the fun of gaming to an often difficult process. If you'd like to check it out. As of this writing, it doesn't look like the Xbox app page has been updated with the listing, but you should be able to grab the app and check it out from the dashboard on your Xbox One.
What do you guys think? Do you plan on brushing up on a little Spanish on your Xbox One?

Middle-Earth-Shadow-of-Mordor-1.jpg

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was a pleasant surprise when it launched last year, going on to become a hit both critically and commercially, garnering a fair few awards in the process, and also a fair bit of DLC. All of this is, of course, a collection of telltale signs that a ‘Game of the Year’ edition, which bundles the game, its updates, and all its DLC together, may be coming, and now, the Australian Board has gone ahead and listed in its database just that- a Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition.

It appears that the game (which was rated, obviously, MA15+) was submitted for rating by Warner Bros. That is really all we know, as the listing does not reveal any more details. As of right now, neither Warner Bros. nor Monolith Soft have announced a Game of the Year edition for the game, but as stated above, it isn’t much of a stretch to think that one might be coming.

If you, however, don’t want to wait for that, and want to jump in now, Shadow of Mordor is currently available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC digitally and at retail.

"Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious - a standalone expansion. Drive some of your favorite cars from the Furious 7 movie FREE for a limited time, starting March 27th."

It is a full but very short standalone game. It is free for now but will retail for about $10 eventually going by its download screen. Its a very easy 1000 points gamerscore. I completed the entire thing in about 4-5 hours. The one thing I did notice is how much it pushes the main Forza Horizon game to the point that the end of the game takes you to a screen where you can buy it.
