While Halo: The Master Chief Collection combines the first edition of Halo with the following editions up through Halo 4, the game receiving the biggest overhaul among them is Halo 2, which celebrates its 10th anniversary on Nov. 9. The game has been given a complete visual facelift courtesy of Halo developers 343 Industries, and to complement their work, the studio brought in an industry stalwart to redo the game’s cinematic cutscenes.

Below, watch the exclusive debut of a Halo 2 trailer highlighting some of the work done for the game by visual effects outfit Blur Studios. The studio, which has done similar work on just about every major series in gaming, from Star Wars to Far Cry to the Batman: Arkham games, completely upgraded every memorable scene from the original Halo 2.

From environments to characters to camerawork, Blur has delivered some of their most gorgeous work to date, and the trailer is just a tease of what’s to come in the full game’s cinematics.

Blur’s work looks beautiful on its own, but how about when compared to Halo 2‘s original cinematics? Blur compiled a few scenes from Halo 2 and placed them alongside their originals, so fans can see just how drastic an upgrade they’ve made to the game.

The first comparison showcases Blur’s knack for environmental shots, with a space-set sequence that may give Interstellar a run for its visual effects money.

The next scene shows Master Chief discovering the Prophet of Regret’s plans, but what’s most stunning is how good 10 years has been to video chatting in the far reaches of space.

The final sequences involves Commander Keyes fighting to retrieve the Index, which looks a lot more dangerous with the visual upgrade.

Look forward to an exclusive discussion with the teams at Blur and 343 about the process behind remastering the game’s cinematics. Until then, feel free to watch the trailer another dozen or so times.

The guy who made the Xbook and the PlayBook "laptops" that take Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gaming on the go may have outdone himself. The "Xbook Duo" at last unites the Xbox One and the Xbox 360 in the same console.

This is a proof of concept only. Master modder Ed Zarick is, alas, not making these for other people, even for the rather strong price he asks for the Xbook and PlayBook. Zarick shows his work in this video, but it's not really a how-to, and imitators should know that the case is 3D-printed. Still, it's possible.

The unit swaps between Xbox 360 and Xbox One with the flip of a switch. What that's really doing is turning the single internal power supply from Xbox One to Xbox 360. It also requires two different controllers, so the Xbook Duo is not true backward compatibility, nor is it really hot-swappable. But it is both platforms under the same roof, with a Vizio 1080p LED LCD monitor. And, yes, it has HDMI output for play on larger monitors.

The Xbook Duo features the slot-loading Xbox One drive on the right side, and the Xbox 360 tray on the left. Both consoles' capacitive buttons are accessible from the top of the unit. Check out the guts below.

"You now play both Xbox One and Xbox 360 games on one Xbook, with this system," Zarick proudly announces. "Because why not." Why not indeed.

So, since you enjoyed last month’s ID@Xbox title Chariot so much, we decided to follow up with another fantastic, brand-new indie title for the Xbox One crowd. This time, it’s Volgarr the Viking, an old-school, hack-and-slash platformer. And for the Xbox 360 gamers among you, Games with Gold gets you two classics, both the highlights of their particular series: Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise and Red Faction: Guerilla. As usual, all games are available only for a limited time, as part of the ongoing Games with Gold program – so find a buddy (or not), and jump in!

  • Volgarr the Viking ($9.99 ERP): Available from Nov. 1-30 on Xbox One (note that Volgarr the Viking is only available in select territories – gamers in Germany, Russia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil can look forward to the full version of Powerstar Golf instead!)
  • Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise ($14.99 ERP): Available from Nov. 1-15 on Xbox 360
  • Red Faction: Guerrilla ($19.99 ERP): Available from Nov. 16-30 on Xbox 360

Sick and tired of games that are too easy? Looking for a balanced, rewarding challenge? Well, that’s what Volgarr the Viking is all about! For Xbox One gamers, this is a journey back to the days of yore, when times were tougher, and you really only needed a couple buttons to play a game. Sure, the controls are easy to learn... but the challenge comes from all angles as you take on the role of sword-swingin’, shield-blockin’, spear-throwin’, bearded Viking. Death comes from all sides, so be ready for dastardly enemies and clever traps – but there are quite a few secrets to discover that will help you along your way. Did we mention top-quality, 16-bit pixel graphics and a pulse-pounding soundtrack? Yeah, you get that too.

For the Xbox 360 crowd, Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise is on offer in November. This sequel to the wildly popular Viva Piñata places you once again at the helm of your own personal garden paradise, where your job is to create a home for your piñata companions. You’ll face challenges from the evil Professor Pester and his Ruffians, and you’ll face even more just trying to please and attract new piñatas to your garden. Trouble in Paradise gives you better controls, more tools, and more robust multiplayer support than the original game, meaning you can get all the help you need. Of course, if you’d prefer not to worry about challenges and managing needs, Trouble in Paradise also features a sandbox mode, where you can simply build your garden to your heart’s content and fill it with your favorite piñata buddies. This is a great game for the younger ones in your family to enjoy, but there’s plenty in Trouble in Paradise’s intricate economy and variable challenges for adults to have fun too.

Finally, Xbox 360 players also get access to Red Faction: Guerilla. On Mars circa 2125, players find that the Earth Defense Force – the original good guys from the first two Red Faction titles – have become corrupt, and are exploiting the miners and the good people of Mars. Using a variety of weapons and vehicles, players must take down the oppressive regime and set up new power structures in its place. Guerrilla is different from other Red Faction titles, in that it’s open-world – players have the option to go where they want and engage in a variety of emergent missions. Buildings and other cover objects are fully destructible, so players can wreak havoc with rocket launchers and heavy weapons. Guerrilla has a strategic element, too: Cause too much destruction or let too many civilians die, and morale will drop among the populace, making the game progressively harder. It’s a big, deep, balanced third-person shooter with plenty to do.

So, feel free to say your Thanksgiving “thanks” early this year, as when November rolls around, you’ll have three new, fantastic games to choose from, all completely free. Check out the full details on our Games with Gold program, and make sure you get in on the action while you can!

It appears that legions of the undead will return in this year's Call of Duty game, based on a leaked trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare that's positively teeming with zombies.

While the leaked trailer has since been pulled from sites like YouTube and DailyMotion, the unannounced mode for Sledgehammer Games' futuristic take on Call of Duty appears to feature a powerful strain of zombie that's equipped to take on Advanced Warfare's super soldiers.

Unlike Treyarch's Call of Duty games, the zombies in Advanced Warfare are fast-moving, high-leaping creatures that travel in huge packs. The swarms of undead pile upon each other like the great zombie floods of World War Z... and they may even have the powered exoskeletons that players will wear throughout Advanced Warfare.

Last year's Call of Duty: Ghosts swapped in alien creatures for zombies in its episodic fantasy mode, and included the Predator and Halloween's Michael Myers as guest characters. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games hasn't said anything yet about a zombies mode for its game, but it sure looks like they're coming.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare officially releases next Tuesday, Nov. 4, but the game will go on sale a day early at select retailers.

Like many retailers, Best Buy is opening up a bunch of its stores at midnight on Nov. 3 for the launch of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

But the company is pulling a fast one on the whole notion of time zones. Because, even if you are in Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones, the stores are opening at midnight Eastern Time. That means, anyone buying Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare from a Best Buy on the west coast can get it at 9 p.m. on Nov. 2.

The electronics retail giant is opening 800 stores. Buyers do not need to have placed a pre-order.

Best Buy is also offering a special Call of Duty trade-in on old titles in the military shooter series, worth up to $30 in value. Specific details are here.
