Xbox One Console Reviews

ok this is weird and won’t affect anyone unless they have a 4k projector...the xbox one x dashboard is not 4k like the PS4 pro dashboard...it’s 1080...this is a problem only if you have a 4k projector bcuz when you’re in the dashboard the projector will keep trying to find the 4k source and blink on and off as it looks for it...it works absolutely fine when you’re playing a game/watching netflix etc...but the shit acts up when you’re @ the dashboard...I googled the problem and microsoft did this to create more RAM for devs to use toward games...idk if they’ll ever change this

did some troubleshooting and finally got it to work...I had to leave the video output @ 1080 but change settings to allow 4k and HDR...the projector will automatically show games/apps in native 4k once I use them...then scale back down to 1080 automatically when I use the dashboard...shit is crisp

Bethesda May Not Release The Elder Scrolls: Legends On Systems That Don't Allow Crossplay

It's no secret that game creators are fond of cross-platform play and integration. They want people to be able to play with their friends and continue their games on any system they see fit, even if it means an Xbox One player connects with a friend on PlayStation 4. Xbox and Nintendo are embracing cross-play functionality, but Sony continues to treat the PlayStation 4 as a gated community. Sony shut down Epic Games' bid to bring console cross-platform play to the PlayStation 4 version of Fortnite, but has vaguely stated it is looking into the possibility of letting its hardware connect to other systems. Bethesda Softworks appears to be putting pressure on Sony to change its stance.

At this year's QuakeCon in Grapevine, Texas, I sat down with Pete Hines, Bethesda's senior vice president of global marketing and communications, to talk about the forthcoming console version of The Elder Scrolls Legends. My first question was for Hines to give a general overview of what console players should expect from The Elder Scrolls: Legends when it eventually hits on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch.

"[The Elder Scrolls Legends] is a strategy card game that encompasses both single and multiplayer," Hines said. "It is both cross-platform play and cross-platform progress."

I cut him off at this point to clarify that the cross-play would only be on "certain systems," since I figured this wouldn't apply on PS4.

Hines replied, "It is our intention in order for the game to come out, it has to be those things on any system. We cannot have a game that works one way across everywhere else except for on this one thing. The way the game works right now on Apple, Google, Steam, and Bethesda.net, it doesn't matter where you buy your stuff, if you play it on another platform that stuff is there. It doesn't matter what platform you play on, you play against everyone else who is playing at that moment. There's no 'Oh, it's easier to control, or it has a better framerate on this system.' It's a strategy card game. It doesn't matter."

I asked him if that meant there's a chance it won't come out on PlayStation 4 if Sony doesn't change its stance. "We continue to talk to all of our platform partners," Hines added. "But those [terms] are essentially non-negotiable. We can't be talking about one version of Legends, where you take your progress with you, and another version where you stay within that ecosystem or its walled off from everything else. That is counter to what the game has been about."

I told Hines that Sony isn't letting Fortnite offer cross-play, and that game is the biggest thing out there right now. "I am aware," he said. "I'm just telling you that's our stance. That is our intent. And that is our message. Not specific to anyone in particular, but to everyone we are talking about. This is 100 percent clear. This is what we are doing, what we need, and what we intend."

Hines didn't outright name Sony in any capacity, but unless Bethesda is doing something different with its cross-platform efforts that conflicts with the freedom Xbox One and Switch currently allow, it has to be PlayStation 4.

Hines' statements comes in a year in which Sony has been under pressure to embrace cross-platform play between PS4 and other consoles. Earlier this year, Xbox's Phil Spencer and the official Fortnite Twitter account tweeted in support of Fortnite crossplay between PS4 and Xbox One. A couple of months ago, former Sony Online Entertainment CEO John Smedley stated the reason for the lack of crossplay on PS4 was simple: Sony didn't want people to buy Xbox One games and end up using them with a PS4. Bethesda's own Todd Howard also stated they would love to do crossplay with Fallout 76, but that Sony wasn't "being as helpful as we want them to be."

Our Take
All systems should allow crossplay and cross-platform progress. I love seeing Bethesda dangle the possibility of one of its games not coming to specific machines in front of console makers. Here's hoping the pressure works.

^^^ I hope more companies take this stance and put some pressure on sony
Gonna take a lot of pressure when Sony is sitting comfortably on top. Doubt Sony gives a damn about a card game not being on their console. Now a triple A title or heavy multiplayer game is a completely different story.

New $149 Xbox 'Washburn' controller reportedly launching in October

Microsoft has been rumored to be cooking up a new Xbox Elite Controller for some time, but we may now have an idea of when it will break cover. The Verge's Tom Warren today revealed that a new $149 Xbox controller is being developed under the codename "Washburn." Further, Warren says, the controller is set to start shipping in October.

Warren doesn't explicitly call this an Elite Controller follow-up, but the reported pricing suggests it will occupy that same space.

The original Elite Controller made its debut in 2015 as a premium peripheral built for those who want to eke out every bit of possible performance. The controller sported trigger locks, a set of rear paddles that can be mapped to different actions, and the option to add longer joysticks and different directional pads.

According to the occasional leaks that have popped up in recent months, the second iteration of the Elite Controller is expected to be more of an iterative update. Changes include a three-stage hair trigger lock, tension control for the joysticks, and Bluetooth connectivity. A matching charging dock could also be in the cards.

Regardless, it's possible we could see what Microsoft has planned as soon as Gamescom next week. Earlier this year, the company teased that it would show off new bundles and accessories at Gamescom during a special episode of Inside Xbox at 7:30 a.m. PT (10:30 a.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. CET) on August 21.

The current Xbox Elite Controller is available now for $144.

Why Shadow of the Tomb Raider will look incredible on the Xbox One X

Xbox Wire has interviewed Frédéric Robichaud, Programming Director at Eidos-Montréal about the work that has gone into enhancing Shadow of the Tomb Raider for the Xbox One X – the world’s most powerful console.

The third game and climactic finale in heroine Lara Croft’s origin trilogy, which began in 2013 with Tomb Raider and continued in 2015 with Rise of the Tomb Raider, will hit shelves on 14 September.

Check out the trailer, and the interview, below:

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Shadow of the Tomb Raider for Xbox One X?
To ensure that Shadow of the Tomb Raider looked crisp and amazingly polished on Xbox One X, we have worked incredibly hard to fully support HDR mode. We’ve revamped the entire pipeline to be HDR from the get-go: realistic lights intensity calibration, HDR textures and global illumination energy conservation.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we offer two modes for players: High Resolution and High Framerate mode. With the GPU power of the Xbox One X, we were able to get 4K at a constant 30 FPS and with the CPU boost, we are targeting 60 FPS with full HD (1080p) in High Framerate mode.

We’ve been able to improve the quality of certain algorithms on the Xbox One X like stochastic screen-space reflections and atmospheric effects. With the extra memory, we have increased the shadow maps and texture resolution to enhance the visual quality.

Audio-wise, we are fully supporting Dolby Atmos to create real 3D audio immersion.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience, and why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?
The recent Tomb Raider games are known for their high-quality graphics and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, as the final entry in the origin trilogy, pushes the visual boundaries more than ever before. Supporting 4K was mandatory for us. Players that do not own a 4K TV will still see the visual improvements, mostly with less aliasing and more details in the image.

If the player chooses the High Framerate mode, they will enjoy the fluidity and reactivity of the controls in a seamless gameplay experience.

The audio immersion is perfect with Dolby Atmos, especially in the jungle areas which are dense with wildlife like the locusts below and birds above. Spatial audio is best experienced with a home theater system; however, all players will still hear those effects and an overall increase in audio fidelity.

How do you expect fans of Shadow of the Tomb Raider will respond to playing it on Xbox One X with these enhancements?
Those playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the Xbox One X will be blown away by the visual quality in High Resolution mode or the fluidity if they choose the High Framerate mode. Players will not want to go back to the previous generation of consoles!

What enhancement were you most excited about to explore leveraging for Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One X?
Without a doubt, High Framerate mode. Maximizing the CPU power to target 60 FPS with a huge, living crowd like in the Cozumel café or Paititi was an interesting challenge. A lot of optimization to our engine was done to achieve these stunning results.

What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future and development at your studio?
We completely revamped our pipeline to integrate HDR from the beginning of production. Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks more real and better than ever before because of 4K and HDR. Better resolution, less aliasing, more intensity and more nuance. We hope that players are blown away by the visual fidelity of the most recent edition to the Tomb Raider franchise.

It is only the beginning; 4K and HDR will become standard to all the games, especially when all developers begin to follow a common HDR standard.

Amazon Prime’s video game pre-order discount coming to an end

Amazon Prime’s 20 percent discount on game pre-orders will go away on Aug. 28, the online retailer announced. Instead, Prime members will receive store credit as an incentive to pre-order video games through Amazon, marking a major change to one of the membership’s best benefits.

Only pre-orders of “select video games” will come with the $10 store credit promotion, according to Amazon’s terms and conditions for the offer. Once a customer has pre-ordered a qualifying item, they must wait up to 35 days to receive their $10 via email. That credit will only be valid for 60 days after activation.

This is a surprising change to one of Amazon Prime’s biggest benefits for console owners. In January 2016, the company unveiled the discount on both pre-orders and recent game releases — meaning Prime members could regularly get a deal on high-priority, big-budget titles, so long as they bought them early.

Amazon Prime members aren’t alone in losing their savings. Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked, a competing subscription service that came with a 20 percent discount on games, shut down earlier this summer. Best Buy’s remaining membership program, My Best Buy, also gives buyers $10 in credit for pre-ordering certain popular games
