Wubi -Ubuntu installer for Windows. Have you seen this?

Does this let you use all your windows programs? Is that possible in Ubuntu?

You can use a program called WineX that I know a lot of Linux users try out on windows apps. Some work some don't, however you could always use a VirtualPC program to go back and forth.

Can someone explain Ubuntu to mea a little?

Is it a totally new OS that will make me have to re-install all my programs or is it some sort of alternative that I can run at the same time as XP?

What are the benefits?

ubuntu is a linux os so your windows programs wont be compatible, but you should be able to find similar compatible programs to replace them, it's also a good OS for people who dont have a powerful system and it doesnt need a antivirus

Ubuntu has made great strides in the linux community. I went full linux for almost a year and for the most part i loved it. I played world of warcraft on linux and a bunch of other games. But for a windows user who doesnt have paitence they will get annoyed with it. Im thinking of going back to them or at the least dual booting again.

thats not entirely correct with apps like ndiswrapper for drivers, and cedega you can definately use windows apps on linux. just have to do some hunting. but linux is mostly know for having that one program work really well for whatever it is. If its burning cd's then thats what it will do really well you would have to get another app to do something else. Windows has a lot of bundle software. Like nero or Roxio. shit that may work but will have a bunch of shit you may never even use but will boggle down your system.

this was cool untill I wanted to uninstall it...no go. But this is good for people who want to try out linux real quick and easy

Trying this out now. Since it reportedly allows me to still access Windows as is, it's a safe program :)

props for bringing this thread back to the front page. Anything with Linux gets a star from me.

Quick question. Is anyone else getting an "permission denied" warning whenever they try to install this on their Windows Vista system? If so, how do you get around that. I've already checked the propertied of ubuntu installer granted myself complete access to file. I always unchecked the UAC for different user access, but still get the same problem. Any help would be very appreciated.

Linux sucks for one reason, the way you have to install, download programs is just bad. Maybe it's because I'm used to Windows and how easy it is but finding th app manager and all that crap is just bad.

The programs aren't so bad. They just need to update the damn GUIs. Nobody wants to work with software that looks like it was developed for Win 95. Also if they can figure out how to smoothly run Windows programs in Linux that would be great. That Wine shit is clunky as fuck. And the only other thing Ubuntu need to work on is Graphic card support. My 512MB PCIe nVidia runs like shit on Linux and a champ in Windows.

Quick question for you, what are you trying to install? The Wubi loader by itself?

Yes, the Wubi loader itself. It gets to about the last 15 minutes then a big permission denied message comes up.

When I drove Wubi, it was doing the Windows install of Ubuntu Linux. It uses the Wubi loader to set up the partitions, boot manager and do the install.

You're not using NVidia closed-source drivers. Due to the licensing, they're not installed by default.

When clicking the wubi.exe file, I get this error message:

pyrun.exe - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddiskxx\DRxx

There are three buttons: Cancel, Try Again, and Continue. No matter which one is clicked, the message reappears. Have to go to the Task Manager and shut down pyrun.exe there, then click one of the buttons, and then it will FINALLY go away. Scared the shit outta me. Name itself looks like a fucking virus or something. But I googled it and there's a few responses so i guess I am alright

from what I read, you can't have any external devices enabled during installation. Which is kind of a hassle for me since I've no idea what to disable and what to leave alone. Might try downloading the ISO file instead
