No one in this thread has faced the same level of public scrutiny and negative experiences as Serena. Her appearance, labeled as The Predator, and her sister’s similar treatment have likely taken a toll on her over the past 25 to 30 years. It’s difficult to imagine how she processed constant negative comments, being called a man or ape due to her bulk size, and enduring such treatment.
The mental toll must have been especially challenging, especially since she was a young teenager when she became the center of attention. While other women athletes like Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff, Sloane Stephens, and Taylor Townsend had an easier path because Serena could be the trailblazer, even though Althea Gibson and Zina Garrison paved the way for Serena, the increased TV attention and social media scrutiny made it harder for her because she was one of the first to truly dominate the sport.
I don’t necessarily agree with her, but I feel compelled to understand her perspective and empathize with her feelings.

For the most part, Serena has always been accepted by most Black men; the only major complaint many had was that she was too muscular, which was fair, but she seldom was ridiculed for her complexion and other assets. Serena has been in several relationships with Back celebrity men, but their reason for not staying with her had very little to do with what she perceived to be them as being unattractive to her features but rather other reasons. She fell in love with and married the image and standards of those who were well known to despise and ridicule her openly. She betrayed herself, which ultimately culminated in what we are seeing today.
