Vice President of Community Relations & Government Affairs - Orlando Magic (Orlando, FL)


To oversee and manage the strategic community relations and government affairs functions for the Orlando Magic, including the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation (OMYF).
SUPERVISES: Assistant Director of Community Relations, Executive Assistant

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide short- and long-term strategic direction and planning for Community and Government Relations. Oversee day-to-day management responsibility for Community and Government Relations.

2. Develop corporate community and government relations strategies and programs that support and further the business goals of the Orlando Magic.

3. Direct all aspects of the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation and oversee all programs and events including, but not limited to, annual charity grant selection and distribution, Black Tie and Tennies Charity Gala, Players Championship for Charity, Event partnerships, online auctions, 50/50 raffles, and game Silent Auctions.

4. Develop fund-raising strategies to increase OMYF’s charitable giving in the community.

5. Serve as the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation’s primary point person to the McCormick Tribune Foundation, OMYF Board of Directors, Volunteers In Progress (VIP) Committee, community and staff.



6. Oversee all aspects of Orlando Magic player, and league-wide community relations programs including planning, implementation, maintenance and evaluation. Provide direction for all aspects of Magic Action Team (MAT), including application for grants via the OMYF; serve as liaison to the MAT board of directors.

7. Direct Orlando Magic player/staff participation in community related special events and programs.

8. Act as the primary Community Relations contact for the NBA.

9. Direct all government relations functions, including strategic direction, annual plan development, issues management, and serve as key contact for government related networking. Direct all political campaign giving.

10. Oversee legislative and political strategy, includingselection and management of the Orlando Magic lobby team.

11. Develop and maintain proactive community involvement plan for Orlando Magic employees (placement on boards, committees, etc.), and oversee Magic Volunteer Program (MVP).

12. Serve as key stakeholder in developing and implementing a corporate charitable giving strategy leveraging the synergy between the Orlando Magic, OMYF, and the DeVos family (includes corporate tables).

13. Serve as key contact for Orlando Magic strategic community relations initiatives, including key advisor to senior management on positioning, strategic direction and strategic partnerships.

14. Serve as key advisor to President and EVP with regard to community involvement and special initiatives such as United Way, United Arts, Cattle Barons’ Ball, Chamber, EDC, etc.

15. Serve as a leader in the community on selected boards, committees and special projects.

16. Serve as a co-manager to the Latin Affairs staff and strategic initiatives to ensure company goals are achieved. Provide mentoring and development of Latin Affairs staff.

17. Prepare communications strategy and advising senior management on the global/strategic communications issues of the organization.

18. Oversee company-wide internal communications and manage the needs of all internal customers.

19. Writing, producing and distributing corporate communications of a public relations nature. This includes speeches for executives, internal newsletter, reports to the community, family newsletter, etc.

20. Provide organizational leadership in all major crisis situations, providing strategic crisis plans and communications direction in the event of such crisis.


21. Responsible for developing and managing all departments.

22. Ensure performance management goals are established with staff and performance reviews are timely.

23. Oversee the creation, management and maintenance of the Community and Government Relations departmental budgets, as well as the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation budget.

24. Oversee the creation, management and adherence to departmental goals for each departmental budget.

25. All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, public relations, communications, government affairs/political science or related field.

• Minimum of 7 years of experience managing community relations/government affairs department or related areas, with multiple department responsibility preferred.

• Proven experience with media relations, corporate communications, community relations, government relations and issues management.

• Minimum 7 years staff management.

• Experience in strategic business planning.

• Grassroots experience and relationships with local governments, advocacy groups and community organizations required.

• Leadership experience in community serving on boards, committees and/or special projects.

• An understanding of legislative, regulatory and political process at local and state levels required.

• Strong leadership skills.

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

• Ability to handle multiple projects, tasks and priorities.

• Strong interpersonal and customer relationship skills.

• Exceptional organizational and computer skills.

• Ability to relate to a diverse customer and employee base.

• Ability to manage staff, budgets and resources in a multiple department structure.

• Ability to collaborate with other departments/organizations over which you have no formal authority.

• Ability to work long and irregular hours.
