Jermaine Dupri is not playing in the documentary world. The music mogul-turned-film producer gave fans their first glimpse into a bold new chapter in storytelling at the 2025 American Black Film Festival in Atlanta with the debut trailer for his upcoming docuseries, Magic City: An American Fantasy. The series promises to lift the velvet rope and take viewers deep inside the iconic Atlanta strip club that helped shape the pulse of hip hop and Black culture.
“Magic City An American Fantasy is a riveting behind the curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz. “The docuseries’ unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire is a perfect complement to Starz’s slate of adult culture driving shows.”
Dupri appeared at the ABFF panel alongside executive producer Cole Brown for a candid conversation about the series, moderated by journalist Jemele Hill. Together, they broke down the importance of Magic City as more than just a venue but a symbol of influence and artistic freedom that spans across generations.
Get this, the five-part series explores nearly four decades of Magic City’s cultural significance through a blend of rare footage and first-person accounts. It traces the club’s transformation into a musical and social institution that became a launchpad for stars and a haven for hip hop royalty, athletes and tastemakers alike.
The sultry docuseries features appearances from artists and influencers who lived the Magic City experience firsthand, including 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi. Their voices offer raw insight into the club’s larger-than-life reputation and its magnetic hold on the music industry.
