Why Most Current Android Phones Will Never Get Flash 10.1 [Android]

Flash is coming to Android phones, and for this, some of you are grateful. So when is it due? For some new handsets, the "first half of this year." But the rest? Probably never.

There are two factors that'll determine whether or not your phone is ready and able to run Flash, whenever it becomes available. First, you'll have to worry about software: As far as we know, Adobe is only planning on supporting Android 2.0 and up, meaning that unless you've got a Droid or Nexus One, you're shit out of luck—unless, of course, your phone gets treated to an upgrade.

But even then! Optimized as it may be, at least some older hardware could have issues running Flash smoothly. Answering a question about a specific phone, Antonio Flores, a man posting on Adobe's support forums who everyone—including a community manager there—seems roundly convinced is a legitimate Adobe employee, says:

No, the HTC Hero will not be supported b/c it does not have the correct Android OS version and its chipset is not powerful enough. We require a device with an ARM v7 (Cortex) processor. Examples include the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets and TI OMAP3 series.

That Cortex qualifier could be a killer, too. Even if your G1 was treated to an official Android 2.1 update, there's a good chance it just doesn't have the horsepower. For the time being, this could—again!—be a Droid-and-Nexus-only affair. (Update: To be clear, what we're talking about here is Adobe's full mobile version of Flash 10.1, not HTC's version of Flash Lite.)

Speaking of updates, there's actually a third factor that could screw your phone out of new Flash: The upgrade path. The Palm Pre's webOS 1.4 update helps prep the platform for Flash, but leaves it up to users to download the plugin as an app. On Android, the distribution system looks like it'll be even more dependent on automatic, over-the-air delivery, so if Adobe tells your carrier and handset manufacturer that your handset isn't up to the task, that too could keep you from experiencing the rich and wonderful scope of Ads That Move On The Internet, on your smartphone.

For first and second generation phones, in other words, Flash 10.1 probably isn't coming to Android at all. Sorry? [Adobe via Andronica via PhoneArena]

Nexus One is still a cool ass phone with or without flash. IMO. Nexus Two?

And that third factor that says users will need to download it upgrade should not be confusing at all. Most updates issue alerts and a button to click. It's not like they have to compile the damn thing first.

Ain't nothin' but somethin' to do.

Read it completely. The Palm Pre will have to download it. On android it will have to be pushed. If Adobe says it can't do it, you are out of luck.

I did. Did you read the part?... , wait, let me post it

This is born out of a quote made by someone many assume to be an employee of Adobe. Not exactly the horses mouth to me but believe what you want.
From where I sit, flash support isn't my top priority to getting the Nexus One. It didn't seem to affect iphone owners and I expect it won't affect me. But if Adobe can figure it out, yeah, I'll have flash support.

What does what he has to say have to do with it? Android updates are pushed over the air and Flash will likely be included with a routine update. The only one where you have to download it will be Palm.

you can already run flash on a nexus one using the desire rom ;)

flash will be on all android's. the hero runs flash lite as does the devour not sure about the mytouch since its tmo's hero. even g1's run flash lite if u use a rom. the hardware runs it its the carriers who want people to buy new phones who won't support it.

flash 10.1 will be coming to the newer models will it officially come to the g1? maybe maybe not. google earth is on my DROID and it was released as a 2.1 only app. I'm on 2.0.1 and it works flawlessly. and i didn't root.

if flash comes as an update and has a apk which i imagine it will it can be ported over.

the greatness of android is it allows users to add apk's without having them root when some coders fix the apk's. flash lite ran on early g1's on test adobe videos and some people still have g1's tho i imagine many have or will be upgrading. the nexus one hardware cleared the fcc and its due out this spring on vzw or sprint since moto is designing the nexus 2 for vzw plus att and sprint are getting the desire and legend respectfully and the incredible is vzw bound. lots of options.

the writer of this article is an alarmist and doesn't know how android works. there are g1's with live wallpaper right now that work with no problem.

flash may not come officially to older devices but flash will come to older devices without rooting more than likely.

Like I said, ain't nothing but somethin' to do.

exactly and sadly most people just do not get this....in this day and age there is no such thing as can't when it comes to these devices.

I mean how else would I be able to run Android on my HTC Tilt...a WM phone....
