F. Gary Gray is a solid, reliable filmmaker. Gets the job done. Difference here is that Gray, and some of the others mentioned, are about the filmmaking "product" first and foremost, while Perry is about BLACK PEOPLE first, and crafty filmmaking 2nd ... or 3rd.
Two different worlds of filmmaking, which is why this discussion isn't going anywhere.
If you wanna talk about "exploitive" black filmmakers talk about the experienced, slick, black professionals who turn out crappy Martin Lawrence, Eddie Griffin or dumbed-down action movies just for the buck, not Perry, whose films (love 'em or hate 'em) are a personal labor of love.
