Ncuti Gatwa is opening up about why he left “Doctor Who” after only two seasons.

In a new interview on the BBC’s “Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg,” the “Barbie” and “Sex Education” star was asked his reasoning for stepping away from the iconic sci-fi show.

“Because I’m getting old and my body was tired,” Gatwa said, adding that the show “takes a lot out of you — physically, emotionally, mentally. So it was time.”

However, when Kuenssberg questioned if he’d ever return to the Tardis one day — like David Tennant did recently — Gatwa quipped, “Never say never.”

It was revealed that Gatwa’s time as the Doctor was over in May, during the finale of the show’s second season as a co-production between the BBC and Disney+. Gatwa’s Doctor was regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously played companion Rose Tyler in 2005 and 2006. What Piper’s return means for the series has not been detailed, and it has not yet been renewed for a third season by the BBC and Disney+.

Gatwa is making the press rounds for his latest theater endeavor, the play “Born With Teeth” in which he stars as playwright Christopher Marlowe alongside Edward Bluemel’s William Shakespeare. It’s set to premiere in London on Aug. 13. In an interview with The Guardian, Gatwa called playing the Doctor “a gift of a job,” though he had to get “quite good at shutting the noise out.”

“It’s loud. But it’s very cool and exciting to be in the middle of this huge thing – there’s haters, there’s lovers, it’s all going on,” he said. “It is an absolute gift of a job, and a gift of a community. The Whovians are so deeply in my heart, I can’t tell you.”

Gatwa said while at Glastonbury Festival, he bumped into fellow former Doctor Matt Smith “in a club” and the two bonded over the experience. “We had great, deep chats about that job and how there’ll never be another like it in our lifetimes,” he said. “We’ll never work that hard again. Never be as stimulated and stretched. It’s also very exhausting, so it’s lovely to delve into other projects.”

:smh:
This kinda ticked me off. I get that the current direction wasn't a hit with a lot of people, but those same people are probably not going to be happy no matter what.

I think there was plenty that was likable with this last run, but I also feel like Russell Davies really didn't have a real plan for a direction to go in. Even now as he leaves, his response was basically "I hadn't written anything yet". Which I guess was him trying to say we aren't missing some big script that he wrote. But to me, the takeaway is that he didn't really have a plan in place for where to go next.

Now, we have to wait who knows how long for who knows what. It might be better, but it might be worse. And fickle fans are going to complain either way.

I've watched all every season of this show but when they came out with the gay dude I was like "Nahh I'm good" don't know what they were thinking :smh:

People just are not ready for a flamboyantly gay doctor even though the doctor has always been ambiguous with his sexual preference.
i hate that they choose that angle..because he is a gifted actor...

it was just a turn off

domingo coleman is gay as a J-bird but he does not act all flaming in all of his roles...

I think of the stories we're good and they made the doctor brave and intelligent again they would have accepted it. This doctor was as weak if not worse than Jodie, he rarely had a clever solution to a problem and just didn't come of as a thousands year old(billions of you count the confession dial) alien, also he cries a lot for some reason lol

Russel used to be good at subtlety putting in social issues without beating people over the head with such a heavy fist, He lost that finesse in his last effort. On his last tenure as shown runner he confirms several times the doctor doesn't really care about gender and has had affairs with men/aliens/ECT throughout his adventures, but they just made it such a central topic in some episodes it felt forced. Ultimately I feel the biggest issue is the stories where just plain boring, this show used to be kind of magical and exciting. The magic is gone lol

Imo they should give it a long break maybe 5-10 years and bring it back with a completely different crew that never touched the old series.

That may be one of the worst parts, he had potential to be one of the all time great doctors but they were more concerned with portraying him a certain way then they were writing good stories and making the doctor an actual hero.

I get this, and i can relate to it in some ways.

I think that this Doctor, by design, was supposed to be a little different than the others. Because of how they split off, Ncuti's Doctor was supposed to be the fast track of getting past the hurdles that 14 and other Doctors had struggled with. The downside of that was that he was less emotionally stable (hence, the tears) and he had his own form of identity crisis.

Personally, I didn't mind that he could cry. But it did feel like he was always crying. It was one thing to show him as more emotionally available, but literally any rough moment would generate a tear. Mind you, they gave him some good moments, but that's still a lot to bear.

I think one more season, and Ncuti would have hit his sweet spot, probably with a new companion (or maybe just bring Ruby back). A new or different showrunner might have helped, too, because Russell was seriously smelling himself for most of this run. It's clear that RTD works best when he has someone to reign him in and focus his particular brand of crazy. On his own, he tends to have these big ideas that don't always make sense under scrutiny.

And I get the taking a break idea, but I'm honestly tired of the solution to a bad run being taking 5-10 years off. It might be my age talking, but I don't have the patience to wait out some imaginary cooldown period. It's not like the fans will be less toxic the next go round, anyway.
