I personally believe BIG was just warming up! For his skills to be that advanced amongst the competition at that time says wonders about about him. Jay-z has not had any competition on a major level until Nas finally got with DefJam. Jay had to work hard to be great in 96 Big just had to open his mouth...

I Think Common, Talib, MosDef,and Andre are a mid Major level.

Who fuckin cares, an overrated dead rapper, and some giraffe-lookin mofo who's been putting out the same album since Reasonable Doubt. NAS changed the game totally with Illmatic, the west coast had shit locked and Nas threw NY back on the map like no rapper since Rakim. Biggie was too fuckin simplistic to be called lyrical and Jay is too unoriginal. Am I the only one who thought it was a fucking joke that Jay named his album American Gangster right after the flick dropped, that's some corny azz shit. Gimme Nas over both these cats, R.I.P to Big tho who was probably one of the most creative cats in the game during his time.

THe album was inspired by the movie  ...word is he wanted to do an exclusive soundtrack, but they could not get the deal done

So I guess that is the reason why Jay took Biggie's rhymes and used as his own huh

You ninjas from the south are the worst :smh:

nah bruh just that ninja....im from the south and when they started talkin that nonsense about jay is better than big....i always disagreed.....:smh:

Gatdammit with the Nas shit already:smh:

Does he pay you people?

But Jay's Swag was out of this world. Especially early Jay.

That's retarded.

Why are people acting like BIG just picked up the mic and started flowin with no influences? Makes no sense.

Jay>>BIG its really not that close. BIG's the product of Puff's hype.

Big was unprecedented. That's why he was the best at that particular time. Nobody spit like Big before him and look at all the bastards he produced. R2D was, and still is, the blue print to a lot of the albums you hear today. R2D is the blueprint to Capital Punishment. R2D is the blueprint to Port of Miami.

Jay's legacy is incredible but he studied cats.

You talking about early Jay?

He was on this shit:

[FLASH]http://youtube.com/watch/v/LfX65hHotC4[/FLASH]

Flipping the tongue like FuSchnickens. GTFOH with that bullshit.

I quote me:

What clinches it for me is that BIG did in 1 album what it took Jay 5+ albums to do...

greatness.

To address the obvious: Jay didn't have the benefit of having a Svengali like Puff behind him, didn't have the production foundation of the Hitmen behind him...and that definitely plays it's part. So from the gate, BIG comes out looking more polished, with better structured songs, with a totally better product than Jay. No denying that.

But even with that, even if all opportunities were magically evened out between them, if I objectively ask myself who I'd rather listen to, voice for voice, story for story, from gutter to penthouse, my choice is BIG.

...and furthermore, fuck Nas. With all the potential you're supposed to have, you been living offa that 1st album accalim for what...13, 14 years? Fuck outta here. All the lyricism in the world ain't gonna help you if you consistently pick dumbass beats, dumbass songs like You Owe Me, you can yell that "anti-commercial" mantra all day long, you ain't follin' nobody. You make dumb choices, Nasir. Deal widdit.

Nigga Jay was doing that shit in the 80's

you cant be serious! big would murder jay on anything. half the hot shit ninjas give jay credit for are big line!

That's what I'm saying....How can you honestly say Jay-z is more lyrically inclined when he steals most of Biggies lines?

Can we end this shit already?

Jay has 10-11 albums worth of material.

And maybe hundreds of guest appearances.

Are you gonna honestly say that the majority of that shit is composed of lines from Biggie?

Lets remember that BIG had 2 albums(3 discs) worth of material.

When Jay uses a Biggie line, youre SUPPOSED to know that he's using a Biggie line.

Thats the whole point.

Shit if someone did the math, maybe 10-15% of Jay's work would be Biggie lines.

Seriously, that whole biting argument is corny..

Biggie didn't have the Hitmen for R2D.

They worked with some of the same producers for their debut albums.

As far as I know, R2D production was done by Lord Finesse, Primo, Pete Rock, and the Hitmen with Puff playing overlord. If that's wrong, help me out.

And furthermore, Nas ain't been shit since 96...

Neither has BIG.

Neither one of these cats has ever spit anything like the original NY state of Mind, Nas raised the lyrical bar in Rap itself, forget coasts or boroughs, neither one of them is as talented lyrically as Nas or Pun for that matter or even Big L, Big was mad simplistic and Jay is and always was a phony azz mofo, fake azz hustler, at least Big's street cred was for real and based on real shit, Jay is a "nice kid" acting out a part.

Notorious B.I.G.
Unbelievable
Verse One:

Live from Bedford-Stuyverson, the livest one
Representin BK to the fullest
Gats I pull it, bastards duckin when Big be buckin
Chickenheads be cluckin in my bathroom fuckin
It ain't nuttin, they know Big be handlin
with the mac in the Ac' door paneling
Bandaging MC's, oxygen they can't breathe
Mad tricks up the sleeve, red boxers so my dick can breathe
Breeze through in the Q-45 by my side, lyrical high
And those that rushes my cluthes get put on crutches
Get smoked like dutches from the master
Hate to blast ya, but I have ta, you see I smoke a lot
Your life is played out like Kwame, and them fuckin polka dots
Who rock the spot? Biggie!
You know how the weed yo, unbelievable

Verse Two:

B-I-G, G-I-E, AKA, B.I.G.
Get it? Biggie
Also known as the bon appetit
Rappers can't sleep need sleepin Big keep creepin
Bulelts heat-seekin, casualties need treatin
Dumb rappers need teachin
Lesson A - don't fuck with B-I, that's that, oh I, thought he was wack
Oh come come now, why y'all so dumb now
Hunt me or be hunted, three hundred and fifty-seven ways
To summer sautee, I'm the winner all day
Lights get dimmer down Biggie's hallway
My forte causes caucausians to say
He sounds demented, car-weed scented
If I said it, I meant it
Bite my tongue for no-one
Call me evil, or unbelievable

Verse Three:

Buck shots out the sun roof of Lexus Coupe's
Leave no witnesses, what you think this is
Ain't no amateurs here, I damage and tear
MC's fear me, they too near not to hear me
Clearly, I'm the triple beam dream
One thousand grams of uncut to the gut
It seems fucked up, the way I touched up the grill
Tryin to play gorilla, when you ain't no killer
The gat's by your liver, your upper lip quiver
Get ready to die, tell God I said hi
And throw down some ice, for the nicest MC
Niggaz know the steelo, unbelievable

WHY YALL SO DUMB NOW? CO-SIGN
4-4 IN 54 DRAWERS
THE KIDS, THE DOG, EVERYBODY DYING
BIG DANGEROUS, U JUST A LITTLE VICIOUS
BIG SPIT PHRASES THAT WOULD THRILL YOU! I LOVE JAY ALL DAY BUT THINK MAN. IF FAT BOY WOULD HAVE LIVED, SHEEEEEEIT. IT AIN'T CLOSE. JAY WAS ON BIG AND NAS DICK BACK THEN(DEAD PRESIDENTS VID). THAT'S WHY AZ WAS IN THE VID, THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NAS.
FAT BOY WAS NICE. I PICK BIG FOR NOSTALGIA SAKE

it's not even fair to compare because Biggie had such a short life...but damn image if he was still alive he would been on some other shit....lyrically

As far as I know, R2D production was done by Lord Finesse, Primo, Pete Rock, and the Hitmen with Puff playing overlord. If that's wrong, help me out.

Easy Mo Bee too.

Yo, bottom line, R2D was not a glamorous album. It is very dark which is contradictory to your initial argument.

I'll give you that Hitmen contribution but they weren't in full force (pop form) at the time.

If you'd listen to the instrumentals of both albums, RD is way more colorful than R2D. Jay-Z had a more glamorous landscape to present his lyrics.

Neither has BIG.

Big was mad simplistic and Jay is and always was a phony azz mofo, fake azz hustler, at least Big's street cred was for real and based on real shit, Jay is a "nice kid" acting out a part.
No it wasn't:lol:

I don't know where you got that from but that person was on BIG's dick hard.

You must be one of those "I hate Jay" niggas from 2002-03.

I thought yall were extinct years ago.

You're spitting nonsense. I like a lot of Nas' shit but if anyone is a fraud, it's Nas. There's no other major rap artist more contradictory.

"Fake ass hustler?" Jay-Z is the ultimate hustler. Go back and listen to "U Don't Know." And go back to bed.

And don't talk about selling keys because we don't know.

Read, listen, and learn

(official lyrics but I edit, quite a few in fact, lines throughout because I disagree w/ what the masses think he is sayin' and I don't always indicate when I've done this so bare w/)

Dreamed of you this morning
Then came the dawn, and I thought you were here with me
If you could only see
How much i love you
That’s all that’s all that’s all baby
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
But there’s always….
That’s all that’s all…

This is the shit you dream about with the homies steamin’ out
Back-2-back, backing them Beemer’s out
Seems as our plans to get a grant
Then go off to college, didn’t pan or even out
We need it now, we need a town
We need a place to pitch, we need a mound
For now, i’m just a lazy boy
Big dreaming in my La-Z-Boy
In a cloud of smoke, and'm playin’ this Marvin
Mama forgive me, should be thinkin’ bout Harvard
But that’s too far away, niggas are starving
Ain’t nothin’ wrong with my aim, just gotta change the target
I got dreams of baggin’ snidd-ow the size of pillows
I see pies everytime my eyes clidd-ose
I see rides, sixes, i gotta get those
Life’s a bitch, i hope i not make it a widow

Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
Its just american dreamin’
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
Its just american dreamin’
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
American dreamin’
But there’s always….
That’s all that’s all…

Now see, the life’s right there
And it seems right there
Its not quite near,
And its not like we’re professionals movin’ the decimals
Know where to cop? (Nah!) got a connect? (No!)
Who under Heaven know how to be successful
Need a Personal Jesus, i’m in Depeche Mode:eek:
They say its celestial, its all in the stars
Like Tony Caruso, how you played the cards
Ya’ll ain’t fucking with me!
The ironies are, had all coast better before he was bars (I think this line is incorrect and should be...)
The ironies are, at all cost better avoid these bars
Now lets start, on your mark
Get set, lets go-get out the car!
Going in circles, its a vicious cycle
This is a crash course, this ain’t high school
Wake up, Muttley, you’re dreamin’ again
Your own reality show, the season begins

Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
Its just american dreamin’
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
Its just american dreamin’
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
American dreamin’
But there’s always….
That’s all that’s all…

The whole verse is filled w/ crazy subliminals, but read this one especially slowly cause he drops bomb after bomb here
Step One in this process, scramble up :eek:in your projects
And head to the heights where big coke is processedwhoa!
You gotta convince ‘em that you not from the Precinct
Please speak slow, cause he no speakey no english
If he takes a liking after a couple of trips
If your money is straight, he’s gon’ give you consignment
You’re now in a game where only time can tell
Survive the droughts, i wish you well…
Survive the droughts? I wish you well?
How sick am i? I wish you HEALTH

I wish you wheels, i wish you wealth
I wish you insight so you could see for yourself
You could see the signs, when the jackers is schemin’
And the cops is comin’, you can read they mind
You can see from behind, you can redefine
The game as we know it, one dream at a time
I’m american dreamin’

Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
Its just american dreamin’
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
Its just american dreamin’
Oh no, i’ll never give up on you
I never felt that before
American dreamin’
But there’s always….
That’s all that’s all…
American’ Dreamin……

Word, the way I hear it B.I.G. was on Jay's dick about the gangsta shit and Jay was on B.I.G.'s dick for his skills as an MC:dunno:

Thanks for pointing out Easy Mo Bee, that one slipped my mind.

Just because it's dark doesn't mean it's not exceptionally well crafted and lyrical...if anything, that adds to the impact and overall greatness of the final product. Stark lyrical/sonic landscapes tend to make for great music, from Miles Davis to M.O.P.

I'll have to see if I can find instrumentals for both albums, I hadn't thought of that.

THAT'S WHY AZ WAS IN THE VID, THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NAS.
:hmm:

So Jay just couldn't have been cool with AZ?

Jay did want Nas in that vid, but that has NOTHING to with why AZ was there...

Side question:

Is that AZ at the beginning of Can I Live???

Always assumed it was, but never really got confirmation. Sounds just like him...

Again, BIG magically woke up one day and decided rappin; he had no influences

You BIG stans are crazy...

Big had influences such as Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, but his style was unprecedented. Do you understand that? Do you know what that means?

Big is far from my heavy rotation but I give props where props are due. I'm about the truth and facts.

There was no one spitting like BIG before BIG. No one. No one. Let me Alicia Keys that for you, "no one, no one, nooooo one . . . "

You know why? Because he came from the gutter and described it better than anyone ever did before him. Save for maybe Scarface.

Big wasn't the "hardest nigga" but he was a "real nigga." One of the realest and best to ever do it.

You Notorious BIG DUMMY.

Bottom line Jay is a deeply spiritual and introspective person and that comes through in his work. i fancy mmyself in the sam "spirtual vein", if you will, I relate to his music and can see what he's trying to convey (as long as i recognize the reference... dude is heavily into using some pretty obscure refrences)so you're going to go w/ who you relate to the most.

B.I.G. is regarded by many as the g.o.a.t after jus 2 albums!! Can u imagine how advanced he would be if he was given a chance to evolve and develop his style? Jay-Z is definitely the best P.B. (Post-Big). I give him his props!! But in any arguement about best, Im running with Frank White
