In 1992 Warner Bros wouldn't give Spike the $ he needed for the Film. Spike felt to do it right he'd need a larger budget (mainly bc his Malcolm's Life was so full). The studio (Spike called "the plantation") denied requests for more money.

Spike made calls to Magic Johnson, Cosby... and Jordan. All gave critical money to make it happen. The movie was overlooked that year but to me...

(Winning an Academy Award is often about timing and competition. Russell Crowe should've beaten out Denzel that year, but Denzel was overdue for a Best Actor win and Crowe was in trouble at the time. No one was better than Halle that particular year, of the actresses nominated. She stood out in a weak group and easily deserved it. Black women rarely get the opportunity to play such strong dramatic roles.)
