In a discussion about how Blackness is not monolithic and can “look so many different ways,” Allen brought up the cultural impact of “That’s So Raven,” particularly for Black audiences. When the actor and comedian proclaimed that Raven Baxter was so “f—ing Black,” Symoné responded with the question: “Was she Black? Why did she feel Black to you?”
As Allen went on to explain the impact of seeing the representation of a Black family on Disney, the actress argued, “So you saw color. Take away the color. Make them green, and hear the words. What color are they?”
--- MY POINT...This is why "African American" is a more appropriate identifier than "Black," as it is rooted in both geography and culture rather than solely in skin colour. The question she raised could only arise regarding an identity defined by skin colour. If TSR had focused on a Japanese teenage girl and her family, and someone remarked that Raven was "so Japanese," such a question would never have been asked, as it would have seemed absurd.
Also the root of "Blackness" is in its struggle in American society. no other ethnic group is defined by their struggle in a society that has rejected them, its defined by the culture that was developed in their land of origin. Japanese Americans are still Japanese regardless of whether the interment camps, discriminatory behavior and events happened or not in America. The identity of that ethnic group is not defined by how America treated them. "Blackness" is. If the Europeans never participated in the Atlantic slave trade and created racial designations and the social concept of race hierarchy you don't get racial term "Negro" (spanish for Black). No other ethnic group was developed that way.
I've said this before. "Blackness" is not rooted in geography, language, cuisine, or history. It a skin color designation that was designed to flatten out all of those thing to a generic skin color designation for the convenience of another group.
i THINK raven's point in the skin color issue was that raven baxter was so AMERICAN. Because all of those things that the family had to deal with in the show are very specifically American things. America has a particular flavor of how it treats its minority groups thats almost unique to itself. You know you have a particular flavor of discrimination when you inspire the NAZIS to imitate you.
But my point is that African American is a much more solid identifier than Black and Black Americans really need to shift to that.
