What do you consider a decent salary for a grown man @ 36?

yeah..i was told a lot of things growing up too......

nothing happened until i made it happen. last thing you want to do is put it all on what someone might do.

Tell me, what did few CEO's (that you know personally) ever say to you growing up.

Y'all dudes got it all wrong. You don't look at the average person's salary cuz it doesn't make sense to compare a dude who works in IT with a dude who work at McDonalds or the restaurant industry. A dude with 10yrs experience in restaurant mgm't will make less than a dude with 10yrs as a lawyer or doctor. You compare people who work in the same field.

The OP is using PeopleSoft which is I.T. if he's programming in it. 45k is cool for entry level. But if you've been in the IT field for a while, you should be doin' better than 45k unless you pickin' up new skills.

But, I thought dudes was hip to the hustle. This is how it worked for me:

1. I learned as much as I could about what OTHER people are doing at my job so I could put it on my resume. It doesn't matter if I actually know how to do it. It just shows that I have a broad background & I'm capable of learning new things.
2. I hooked up my resume so it shows that I kept jobs for 1-3yrs.
3. Read up on the shit so I could speak knowledgeably on it at an interview.
4. I made 1 or 2 friends at a few jobs as references, non managers. Job friends are willing to lie for you if necessary.
3. I asked for the money I wanted. Everytime I gotta new job, I asked for $5-10/hr more than the last job.

I started off in the IT field making 26k in 1993. Now, I'm doing 6 figures. It was easy for me. You just gotta recognize there's a hustle to everything in life. Some dudes hustle in the streets, other dudes hustle in the office.

Peace fam. I know a lot of factors matter but here is the run down. I'm 36 living in Philly. I just got promoted to an awesome entry level position in Peoplesoft applications, but its only paying 45k.

I like to say 20 bucks an hour is the new minimum wage for adults. I cant seem to get much more than that. I feel so far behind my white counterparts too.

Own my own crib, got a 96 maxima in great condition. 2k in savings and 4500 in 401k.

Whats should a grown man really be making in your opinion?

dam i'm 27 making 95k no degree........u gotta step it up babes!!

head of strickland securities (based out of ohio, PA, and GA, handles various things from health care, social services, foster care, etc.)

"blah blah blah blah i want you to be over our social services(private practice) dept. blah blah blah"

i still hear that every time i speak to him. and i just nod my head, sure why not...

i have carrier heads vp's calling me frequently to drop everything and come do what i do for them.

"come oversee training"
"accept our offer of v.p. of sales, midwest, REvol"

the offers are there but after being burnt on so many i don't listen to any of them. it's about what i can do on my own.

and at the same time i'm not telling you not to trust what people say they'll do for you, but don't solely rely on just that.

well they way you talk as if they lied to you, you should consider those options if it means you doing better than you already are.

Saying that their was no reason for you to really reply after I told you about my networking contacts.
:smh:

i tell folks you don't need a degree to make 6 figures

some do...and some dont.
i know now ah days a degree doesnt guarantee you a job or large amounts of money.
but some just arent business savvy enough to make it without a degree/college education.

if you look at most of the wealthiest people in the world.
most dont have degrees.
but, theres also a lot that did make a lot of money with their degrees.
and some of them are making millions.

what worked for most of you in this thread that didnt use yall degrees to have financial security might not work for the next man.

thats why i never try to coach people to stay away from college.
i can name plenty of brothas that i know who tried to stay out of school and make it on their own...and the shit just didnt work out. but when they went back to school ...and got their degree/education...then their shit started to come together.

....then they were able to work for themselves later down the line....or continue to work for others...and invest enough whereas they were bringing in some serious paper.

people gotta be careful how they word things.
some of yall just posted salaries when yall typed about about yall sucess....post all the years of BS/struggle yall had to go through also. some folks like to play follow the leader after they see and read stuff...but some just aint built for the shit that follows. most, but not all, that made it with their own business didnt have a easy ride.

good example......a lot of black folks looked at how white folks made millions and started their own buusiness off drug money...so they played follow the leader...without really doing some thorough investigating....and well, you know the rest of the story.

I know a disabled guy who pulled in about 6 figures after getting a bachelors in English. I agree with Da Don that it takes abit more than your degree to earn money. I guess the thing to do is heavily exploit the resources you have at hand. Go beyond what is expected of you. This dude at his prime in college was reading a book a day. I'm guessing he was entirely self-taught in real estate and investing. The English degree was probably just there as a generic bachelor's degree since most employers require some sort of 4-year degree.

Depends where you live San Francisco, Oklahoma City, or Austin. But I think most adults can live comfortably on 40,000

i tell folks you don't need a degree to make 6 figures

my degree does nothing for my occupation/business.

First of all, college is not about learning how to make money.

College is about learning how to think for yourself, how to communicate your ideas, how to be part of a team, and how to evaluate and learn from other peoples experiences.

If you go for other reasons, you are wasting your time.

There is this woman that "pulled in" 10 figures for writing 7 books about some nerd named Harry Potter.

An English degree works for some people.

Don,
Quit fucking with these young cats... aint shit you can do starting in the medical field that is guaranteed to pay you $100K starting off without having a Doctorate of some type.

What young buck don't realize is that shit is LIP SERVICE....unless you are their family (and even then sometimes).

Here is the upshot...the only person that can guarantee some shit like that and make it happen is the OWNER of a corporation. PERIOD.
Evean a C.E.O can't really "guarantee" you a 6 figure job without your resume deserving it, based on who is already currently employed in those positions.

Most companies have HR departments and have jobs that have paygrades..or paybands associated with them. You are not really going to be able to get more than what a position pays unless you have the SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE to justify such. Some kid straight out of school.....I aint going to have the juice to make that happen.

These kids better wake up! Thinking it easy to get to $100K. Or somebody that is NOT THE OWNER of something can promise you a job. :smh:

WTF? So if you save 10-15k a year, in 5 years you got 50-75k cash thats poor man thinking? Only on BGOL will you hear this shit.

The average american is thousands in debt, they do not have 50-75k sitting any fucking where. Yet a plan that says have 50-75k saved in 5 years is poor mans thinking?

Could you flip the money investing it or doing other shit................sure, just having that kind of cash laying around you are doing better than most americans....................cept on BGOL where everybody makes 6 figures, dates nothing but dimes, and drive nothing but 60k foreign cars.

CO-SIGN.

I live in Bufalo and make $36k myself. I know cats gonna try to clown but, at the age of 26 I bought my first house. Its really where your at and how much can make you comfortable. Like I said earlier, its what you save not what you make.
Yo nobody can clown you on what you make homie. You see only niggas will say you need to make this much, you need to make that much. Real heads can make it whether they make 30k,45k,55k. Dont listen to online motherfuckers trying to tell you what you should be making, half of these cats got bad credit, sell dope on the side, or got rich parents. You never know how people get theres, so dont watch people you do you and keep your business to yourself cause once you start asking for opinions from 2 faced whitewashed house niggas you gonna get bullshit responses.

after reading all these replies i have come to one conclusion. the people have issues. everyone is so worried about how much money they or the next man is making. if you own your home and can pay your bills and have something for retirement and enjoyment i say fuck it. money isnt everything. how well you enjoy your life is what matters because i never seen a uhaul at the grave yard. (you cant take it with you.) find your happiness in other things besides monetary shit. :smh:

i own my own home outright and drive a 2000 mercury. if i save a dime or $3,000 a month im still happy because i have people in my life that love me. i dont give a shit about the joneses and could really give a fuck less about a bitch that judges me off my financial status. its this thinking that makes us slaves. slaves to the almighty dollar. wake the fuck up.

Lemme ask you a question, dawg. Why is everybody else's response bullshit except urs? Do you know any of us to quality that statement? Some of us actually know wtf we're talkin' 'bout. Why can't we give the OP the benefit of our knowledge & leave it at that?

There is this woman that "pulled in" 10 figures for writing 7 books about some nerd named Harry Potter.
I still have no clue how she pulled that off. There's literally a whole ocean of decent fantasy books out there that never got the publicity this series got.

Who gives a fuck what everyone else makes, bitch. I said 100k ain't alot from my own experience & from people I know. So, I know wtf I'm talkin' 'bout when it comes to MY experience. Bitches kill me thinkin' they know shit about another nigga on the internet. The fuck would I lie to a bunch of simple niggas on a fuckin' porn board? If you check my posts, there's very few things I speak on cuz I only speak of shit I know. And I know for myself & the people I know, 100k isn't alot.

No your dumb ass was talking for everybody. You the one laughing at people thinking $100K is a lot when guess what...compared to most of America IT IS A LOT. So please STFU with your backpedaling. There's always some small person with a small mind trying to make others feel bad.:smh::smh:

Actually its not a bad way to get a bit of a clue. What you have to do is throw out the obvious bullshit and you can get a really good idea of what is going on. As to your statement that half ain't doing well...

this is the salary range for people with my title

These are my credit scores

Now I could sit here and brag but thats now what I do. It took me 11 yrs to get where I'm at. When I first got into advertising my starting salary in NYC was $23,500/yr. I had to alternate between my phone bill and my cable bill and I had to have cable to monitor shows and commercials. None of it was easy but its a matter of not giving up. The OP is doing better than a lot of Americans. He owns his own home, a lot of people can't say that...especially since the housing bubble burst.

You sound like a fuckin' faggot worryin' 'bout somebody's feelings on the internet. The OP wanted to know what a grown man should be making. Everybody's entitled to express their opinions. And how the fuck I'ma talk for everybody, bitch? I swear you soundin' real sensitive.

My point is this: when you make more money, you tend to spend more money. When you're makin' 45k, you can afford what 45k can get you. When you're makin' 100k, you can afford what 100k can get you. Rarely people who make 100k live like they make 45k. If I'm makin' 100k, I'm spendin' in accordance with what I make.
In big cities like DC where I'm from, the cost of living eats that 100k up. Condo rent easily goes for 3k to 4.5k a month plus condo fees, food, etc.

This man dont need people he dont know to tell him if he is doing good in life. All this yip yapping about about what people make. Let me tell you this I knew a mother fucker that made 35k was living decent and played the fucking lottery with one fucking dollar now they fucking 9 million dollars richer. The moral is when you chase money you dont get it when you humble your black ass good things happen. Shit all the degrees everybody talking about and Bill gates the richest motherfucker in america with no degree now tell me who knows what the fuck they talking about.

What are u saying? This is BGOL bro....I got 2 Phds. I am a lawyer at a top firm and a heart surgeon. I only pull dimes and have always only pulled dimes. I got my regular house and my vacation house in the caribbean. I am about to get a mansion in Italy in a few months. I also am into real estate. I pull in about 25 mil a year:rolleyes:

I am also only 25 and grew up in the hood.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::confused::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I personally know cats in school that have done it, I got the hook up nigga, stop hating...

So do I.
Niggas that came out of school with me... at the University of North Carolina.. a "few" got paid nicely coming out of graduate school programs. But hey they were at NEAR THE TOP of their top 10 nationally ranked graduate school programs. They had RIDICULOUS GPA's and RIDICULOUS INTERNSHIPS...

Moral to the story...sure a you may see a couple of fucks get the "Dream Job" when they finish up.........but don't base your shit off what "other folks got".

What city do you live in?
What degree program are you in?
What type of job are you trying to get into upon graduation?

Maybe that would help clear stuff up a bit.

Dawg, he ASKED!!!
What do you consider a decent salary for a grown man @ 36?
He didn't ask "Statistically, what salary do grown men @36 make?"
In my consideration being 37 & living in DC, he should make more than 45k. I can't speak from any other perspective other than what I know & experience.

Nah man I'm pretty sure them kats be fronting on ya man, cause that kinda hook up ain't realistic on any level of the imagination. U need the experience which comes with years to justify making that kind of salary. Not to mention u would be leap frogging over other people who are more qualified than you. Put u'r self in the shoes of an employer and see how it sounds what u'r saying or where u'r coming from!!!

Don't get me wrong I ain't saying that u personally can't or will never make that kinda salary in the medical field but usually when an employer says that if u come on board & work for me u will be making big time x amount of $$$$.........anyone who has been around da block a couple times in life will tell ya that is always code or translation for saying "if u work for the company this is the potential ($$$$$) u stand to make". It doesn't mean this is what u start off at when u begin working. It's completely 2 different things, so u might seriously wanna clarify that up with u'r contact, network or the connections u got so that when the rug gets pulled from underneath u in terms of salary expectations, u'r not devastated.

It happens all the time. The problem comes in when those college graduates relise that the contract may be worth 5x their salaries. At that point, they become jealous and stumbling blocks start.

A good business man removes himself from the business and hire managers and representatives.

Yes there are not but a handful of jobs where you can expect to make $100K coming out with ZERO experience. Kids in college are delusional about starting salaries.

Last year I went to the University of Georgia career fair to recruit for my company and department. Keep in mind that the fresh out of college starting salary in my department is in the $38K-$42K range. I was collecting resumes and talking to the students about the company job etc. I asked the students what they were looking for as far as salary........I kept hearing $60K+

I asked a few of them....
How do you think you justify a $60K start salary and you know nothing about how to do the job....... when we pay that salary after somebody has learned the job and been employed for 5 years.
