What do you consider a decent salary for a grown man @ 36?

Kansas?????????[ What good is 45k when Hurricanes come thru every year and blow your house to the next county?

huh.gif

If a fucking hurricane comes through KC, it's a sign of the apocalypse

cleveland.

Peace fam. I know a lot of factors matter but here is the run down. I'm 36 living in Philly. I just got promoted to an awesome entry level position in Peoplesoft applications, but its only paying 45k.

I like to say 20 bucks an hour is the new minimum wage for adults. I cant seem to get much more than that. I feel so far behind my white counterparts too.

Own my own crib, got a 96 maxima in great condition. 2k in savings and 4500 in 401k.

Whats should a grown man really be making in your opinion?

Dam thats too much information :hmm:

You should be pulling 6 figures in your 30's man.

Negro fucking please. I bet you don't make that bank

you pulling six figures?

Nah he lying

You're doing good man, but to put it in perspective I'm above all your monetary numbers you put and I'm only 26. Hustle harder and longer bruh.

LOL@the stats
question doesnt make sense.
question should have been, what do u consider a decent salary for yourself if you were a 36 yr old man?

your gonna get a thousand different answers
but none in this thread are accurate because everybodies lifestyle is diferent.
the numbers that most of the people in this thread are giving you are amounts they feel would be decent for THEMSELVES....dont no MoFo in this thread know what is decent for the next man.
YOU GET IT?

I understand you wanted to create a classic debate..but i just had to point that out.

Kansas????????? What good is 45k when Hurricanes come thru every year and blow your house to the next county?

Isn't that tornadoes?

Houston Texas. As long as you don't have a bunch of kids you can make it.

Nigga bullshit. Ain't no dam way you can have a nice living making 25k a year. You must live in some ratted out home in 3rd ward or something. I remember when I made 27k working for the county and I thought I was going to die. Shit the only bill I had was my truck note. 25k in 2008 ain't shit!:smh:

As I said, people are fucking idiots. Anybody in ohio can verify you can live good if you are SINGLE off 2k a month. Everything you make over that should be saved, and you will not have problems in life.

Saved for what?

Where are the investments?

Saved at 2 %....No sir. Thats poor Mans thinking...

Re: What do you consider a decent salary for a grown man @ 36?

A decent salary would be a blend of benefits, income and options for growth. Its not the dollar figure in the income category that is the should have the final say.

At 36 you should be happy and enjoy your health, your family, and your leisure...

As you grow older, you will realize that your time is really your treasure...

All these middle incomes can be equated by a nay on a purchase...ie $25k income without a house payment, title insurance, a car note, car insurance will eat that $100k income up and that 25k will probably outweigh the $100 income without purchase...

Listen my dude. I think I'm a well educated man. I live in jersey the most fucking expensive state to live in no matter what anyone tells you! I make 62k a year and I have a wife in Med school which just adds to my expenses. She is going to so a rotation in international medicine this summer and it's gonna cost me up to 75 hundred. I'm telling you we are BROKE!!!! I have 8 buck in my account as we speak and just got four hundred bucks from my fam to hold us over till my next pay. I think we don't live beyond our means but with both of us in school we pay alot in tuition, book and in my wife's case travel and exam cost. So it all depends on were you live. Stay out of JERSEY

 @ niggas who think 100k is alot. It's alot if your goal in life is to be mediocre. It ain't about comparing yourself to white folks. It's about making a choice to live the life you want & applying yourself. Some of us aren't content with just making 45k, driving a civic & living in alil ass house/apartment. That's why we start our own companies. Cuz we don't wanna be limited to what someone thinks we should make.

Having said that, at 36yo you should be making twice 45k. Step ya game up & don't let small-mindedness hold u back.

WTF? So if you save 10-15k a year, in 5 years you got 50-75k cash thats poor man thinking? Only on BGOL will you hear this shit.

The average american is thousands in debt, they do not have 50-75k sitting any fucking where. Yet a plan that says have 50-75k saved in 5 years is poor mans thinking?

Could you flip the money investing it or doing other shit................sure, just having that kind of cash laying around you are doing better than most americans....................cept on BGOL where everybody makes 6 figures, dates nothing but dimes, and drive nothing but 60k foreign cars.

Only 9.5% of all Americans make 100k and over. IT IS alot of money. It's nothing wrong with aiming high, but you shouldn't raise the bar to high for yourself.

I'm not 36 and I really don't know what a 36 yr old "should" make, but as long as your comfortable and focused on improving and not complacent I think your ok.

What's "too high"? There are college kids making MILLIONS of dollars (FaceBook, YouTube, MySpace, etc) cuz they had a great product or idea, believed in themselves & wanted more from themselves. You should raise the bar as high as you can & apply yourself.

I'm talking about a humble living. Small apartment no kids and no bills. And no I live in South Houston and I make over 6 figures a year.

I pay one of my managers 25 a year...he lives in a rented house in East Houston. If you go to his spot he has everything you can think of. He does side jobs and pulls in an extra 4 to 5k and he lives okay. Like I said, he has NO KIDS....and no debt. He saves every dime and he's making it. The reason you couldn't make it was because you probably had debt, car note and a life style that didn't help. I made 30k at one time and I payed off my first business loan in 2 years without being late once....maybe it's because I'm West Indian and we don't spend crazy like some of ya'll who knows....

Here's another answer:

I am in DC making aroung $45K. That ain't shit in this area :smh:
I came out of teaching where I made $35K. I actually bought a condo with that salary. Now I'm in pretty decent shape credit wise. I pay my bills on time and have a little bit of fun money, but not enough to save the way I like. In this area, the cost of living puts $65K as decent living.

That 6 figure salary is possible but too many people think it's soooo easy to obtain. There are grad students out here that ain't seeing that type of money when they graduate. Some are, but far and few from what I've seen. In DC with the right clearances you can make that type of bread.

You know how I can tell a cat that is talking a good game, but has never been self-employed? Because before being self-employed means ANYTHING esle, it means struggling. I make WELL over 6 figures and the MAJORITY of my money goes back into my business (I made WELL over $250K last year and actually SAW about $60K on my personal tax return after expenses). Actually making that illusive 6 figure salary self-employed is illusive as fuck unless you put in work and accept the fact that you gotta crawl before you walk. Cats DO NOT understand, but they will. I check the job sites all the time and base salaries are dropping like STONES even in the highest paying fields.

Damn I fucked up with Hurricanes in Kansas. Shit got me laughin cuz I ain't even notice that shit till I came back up in here. But yall knew what the fuck I was talkin bout! Tornadoes mufuckas! TORNADOES!

It depends on the kind of business you are in. I walk away with over 100k after I've spent money on business, payroll and supplies. I agree with the struggling part though. When I got my first loan 14 years ago...I ate beans and rice, watched my lil 19 inch tv and played sega on my off days sitting in my little cramped apartment I shared with 2 others.

It was kicking my ass to pay back the banks and even after all of that I lost my first contract with Six Flags....it took me 4 years to get back (and surpass) the amount of money I make now....

Like you said man, you get more control on your money when you "own" it. But YOU do have to work TWICE as hard to keep it.

And another thing. It IS possible to live on 25k a year. You just won't have the luxuries you're used to. That's why some cats think it can't be done.

dog, I'm younger than you and I already have more than you in my savings and my pension plan. then again, I invest in stocks and bonds so.....but at 36, hell, you should be making more than 45....my man is like 38 and he's making like 60 somethin'

WTF? So if you save 10-15k a year, in 5 years you got 50-75k cash thats poor man thinking? Only on BGOL will you hear this shit.

The reason I stated "Poor man's thinking" is because that $50k-$75k is not working for you in no way... Someone on BGOL gave a stock tip on VISA and it opened at $36 its trading at $76 a share..Now if you had that money working for you in some way that $50-$75k would be At $100k-$150k today...Thats within 90 days..

The only way a man can achieve wealth is that he listens and takes advateges of solid situations...

If your saving your dollars for some investment, thats one thing...But just to be saving for the heck of it...it makes your decision a poor one and your money is not working for you,,,

Your money is smarter than you at this point if that is the case...

by the way I just gave one of my sons a car with 400k miles that I hated to give up...I date and wifed the same woman from my High school college days...sure, i've chased other skirts, but there is nothing better than home...

I value my mission statement and my leisure and my time...Not materials.

That sounds good...but the fact is that in 2006 only 19% of HOUSEHOLDS made over $100K... Not individuals...HOUSEHOLDS!

If my man is 36 I am less focused on the monetary amount..if he is able to sustain himself.

At 36 You should be well within a career path. You should be STABLE and on a good path at your gig. Have savings and a 401K, which the OP does. Having those (2) things puts him ahead of MOST PEOPLE in America.
He should have a stable roof over his head... and a reasonable means of transportation (IF not in NYC)

Most importantly at 36 you should make sure you are living right. Eating right, exercising, checking the prostate etc. You want to make sure you are able to live another 40 - 50 years HEALTHY.

I kicked off my second company this year (I was in IT consulting, but my first love was graphic design and web design, so I decided to get back into that game after 10 years). Software, digital printers, new PC's was all a KILLING. I knew I would take MANY "L's" as soon as I started because I didn't do the loan thing with the first company and I wanted to start this one clean too. I'll get back to where I was by next year, but to do what these cats claim should be automatic AIN'T easy.

Self employment can be worst than having a job...

That self emplyment tax is really double taxation and you don't have the full scale of write-offs...There are other deductions and grants afforded to businesses that the self employed can't see on a schedule c...

Somehow you have to move to the business model and have those who you EMPLOY to your MISSION...

Remember that if your clients income drops...yours will eventually drop as well...

The problem in this thinking Callamity is that the "greenback" doesn't have a brain...

Now if you are waiting for someone to offer you $100k for your craft, you may be waiting a long time...

But if everyman have these greenbacks in their pocket...especially in the Greater Washington area...You merely have to figure out how to dig your fingures in enough pockets to fulfill your desired amount...

You really don't have to have the skill in some cases...

For instance, in Northern Virginia, you have many Spanish speaking people living without work...merely supply lawn mowers and solicit estate owners on contract for your workers to care for their property..or cleaning..or whatever...

You collect the money..and they do all the work..

All you need is solid contracts for any desired business and you can monitor the bottom line...

Pay your managers $2.50 an hour more...

Any business that has a need...you win! Garaunteed!

Sounds like a lot of YOUNG CATS new to the workforce are yapping.
Not even 4% of wage earners earn over $100k/year in America.
Yea, its easy to see who the posers and dumbazzez are typing from their moms basement, dorm rooms, and efficiency apartments. Its clear by the ample amount of absurd commentary that many repsonding have never had real life or workplace experience outside of a summer job or afterschool part-time gig. Its laughable how they sit and criticize this mans savings account without fully knowing his home equity situation or other expenses. Even more hilarious how they talkdown on his 45k salary when the average household member income was around 26K.

This fucking morons are even too stupid to realize that their bullshit reeks through the computer screen and anyone with half a clue has spotted them as the phoney in the room. Its so difficult to hold honest and helpful discourse here because there are just too many fucking members living on fantasy island.

You must be young. If it were that easy we'd all be rich. Those "college kids" are 1 in 300 million. How much do you make. Let me guess 6 figures?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: The fuck out of here. Niggas lie so bad on here.

If you are not happy with your self making that money then bounce...

on BGOL there will be a lot of PSUEDO-GURUS telling alot of shit myself included...

you gotta decide for self...

I wisk I had 2k in savings, I wish I had 4500 invested, I do own my own home though, but shit youre doing better than me..
