Because of my natural laid back attitude when people first meet me they tend to think I'am quiet, innocent, naive, boring, or uncomfortable. It doesn't help that i look 3 yrs younger than my actual age. I'am the exact opposite of that. Just takes me sometime to warm up to you most of the time if iam sitting there quiet then iam studying you. I choose my friends and associates very carefully.

Biggest misconception is that I'm infinitely capable and always confident. My mother calls me her "rock."

I thought she was saying because SHE is lightskinned and educated, people assume that she is given everything on a silver platter instead of having to work for it. :shrug:
Many people at work assume I'm mean and stand-offish...most of them know I'm from NYC so many of them made that assumption w/o getting to know me...coworkers that didn't judge me and got to know me know otherwise...

That was my answer to the question, people believe that because I'm light skinned and educated, that everything is easy/free, in actuality, expectations are higher & I push myself to overachieve....

I have a white first name and when I used to show up to interviews, the white folks would have that "WTF" look on their face. I also don't smile much unless I am around friends or family so people that don't know me think that I am mean or anti-social.

In any case misconceptions about me...
That I am a quiet shy person... I get the work folks. I think white people are so comfortable with us today, that if we aren't running around the office cooning or behaving in some other fashion they've seen on BET or MTV, the we must be shy-type people. I suppose I should just tell them "I don't like you white people, you're idiots with no real idea of how the world works, and I wish I could beat you all to hell when ever you say anything longer than two sentences"...but I find it much easier to not socialize with them and just speak to them on issue pertianing to the task at hand.
That I was raised in the Suburbs or some affluent type area... I get the form my fellow brothers and sisters. Seeing as I not a drinker, not a smoker and I hate gospel music as well as country western. Plus I hate wearing clothes with large signatures and names on it. And i suppose there must be something visually about me that does it but I'm not sure. People find it hard to believe that I grew up on the South Side of Chicago in Englewood. I suppose I'm not a product of my surroundings.
That I date white women... moving down here to the south I've found that the interracial thing is huge here, but I hate when white women are even in my presence. I've rather sit down on some milk crates in a alley with 4 cracked out sisters from the low end than spend 1 minute with some funky pale skinned flat backed white chick. But peoples are forever thinking I have a thing for white women. I don't get it...

The "tragic mulatto" thing is a common stereotype perpetuated both by blacks and whites. There is even a painting named so. Anyway, the myth is that we mixed people don't fit with white(but want to) and don't fit with black so we are all fucked up or something.

Just like a joining fraternity, every bi-racial person I know has to go thru the internal struggle of deciding which race he or she should belong or identify with while weighing the pros & cons of that decision when growing up even into adulthood. The psychological conflict is overwhelming for bi-racial people cause if u associate with one race it's like u'r saying the other half of yourself don't exist and vice versa.

hey i agree with you 100%. I was just speaking on other peoples misconceptions as per the thread title. The way I see it its their problem more than mine.
