US prison boss can't believe his eyes when he visits a Norways worst jail

A former U.S. prison chief got the shock of his life after visiting a correctional facility in Norway and discovering that even hardened criminals are afforded a lifestyle far removed from that on offer back at home.

For 38 years, retired superintendent James Conway worked in the Attica Correctional Facility in New York but found little to prepare him for his recent trip to Halden Prison in Norway.

The U.S. famously has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world and Conway told the makers of a made-for-TV documentary called The Norden, that he had never wasted time worrying about his inmates well-being.

‘It was your actions that put yourself here,’ he said. ‘Who cares how they feel?’

Halden Prison is one of Norway's newest correctional facilities and takes an approach to inmates that had Conway questioning if he was really in a prison, reports Finansakrobat.

He was shocked by the luxury items available to prisoners including an Xbox and a recording studio

'Jan, it would appear that you've chosen to construct your prison in a forest and in a mountain area. Can you offer any explanation as to why that would be?' he said.

Stromnes explained that the architect suggested that the prison 'keep as much of the nature as possible' so inmates could serve under normal conditions — a key principle of the Norwegian prison system.

Next, Conway visits Unit C, a building that houses 84 inmates.
Ten inmates share a spacious living room complete with a large television and dartboard. Conway is most shocked by the kitchen, which actually features real knives and forks.

'I'm surprised to see metal silverware in a high-security facility,' he said. 'It's a very well-equipped kitchen.'

The kitchen has other surprises for Conway, with the cupboards well stocked with glasses and porcelain dishes.

'Very functional - however very sharp,' said Conway. Elsewhere in the facility inmates even have access to tools.
After being shown wire hangers in the closets, Conway voices his surprise and warns that inmates could fashion the top into an 'ice-pick-type weapon.'

But 'if there is a steel knife in the drawer around the corner, why would you need metal from a hanger?' he reasons.

Beyond his safety concerns, Conway was also surprised by the luxury items available to prisoners including an Xbox and a recording studio.
'I know there's a lot of education and vocational programmings to prepare inmates for work on the outside, but I must say I've never seen anything like this,' Conway admits.

'This may be a little over the top.'
Stromnes explains that the recording studio is part of a music teaching program, which officials hope will lead to less crime.
'This is prison utopia,' said Conway.

He said that if inmates at his old prison could design the prison of their dreams - it would look a lot like Halden.
'I don't think you can go any more liberal - other than giving the inmates the keys.'

In spite of Conway finding fault with the prison he visited, the numbers show that Norway has an incarceration rate of 70 per 100,000, totaling 3, 571 inmates for the entire country.
The rate in the U.S. is more than 10 times that with 707 per 100,000, or 2,228,424 people behind bars.

Must suck living there knowing that if some homeless creep decides to molest your kid, he would actually be rewarded with better living conditions.

true but what about all the innocent people that get sentence tho? specially us black people

Norways prison population is less that 4000 inmates.

So going to prison in Norway is like sending a kid to their room in 2014...Real punishment..:lol::lol::lol:

But all prisons aren't like what the OP is trying to portray

As a life prisoner, I spent the first eight years of the 20 I served in a cell with a bed, a chair, a table and a bucket for my toilet. In that time I was caught up in a major riot, trapped in a siege and witnessed regular acts of serious violence. Across the prison estate, several hundred prisoners took their own lives, half a dozen of whom I knew personally – and a number were murdered. Yet the constant refrain from the popular press was that I, too, was living in a "holiday camp". When in-cell toilets were installed, and a few years later we were given small televisions, the "luxury prison" headlines intensified and for the rest of the time I was in prison, it never really abated.

Not even sure if they have homeless there. If they do they are probably treated very well. Norway has better standard of living than the USA on average.
Sucks that the dude who killed all those folks is chilling somewhere like that. Also interesting when dude from Attica said he didn't care about prisoner conditions.

So you guys ok with a guy breaking into your crib, stealing abd breaking your stuff, you have to work hard just to get your stuff back, while the guy who did it, is chillen in his grown up time out. And once out he is free to do the same thing or worse.. Thats weird because most people that get violated like that are ready to kill someone.

I didn't even bother saying anything. Some people on this board are intelligent but there are a good number who don't live in the real world. One member posted that prisons in the US are too rough and maybe criminals would turn themselves in our not resist police if we made jail nicer for them.

No they aren't.....but if it's anti US then its fine with them.

When somebody kills one of their children and then get video games before they do they would sing a different song.

Wonder if the black inmates in Norway get the luxurious prison or are they in the cell with the bucket for a toilet.

Some people don't realize that there are prisons that are quite nice in the US compared to others.

There are co-ed fed prisons that you wear civilian clothes and work a 9-5 on the prison grounds or offices.

They are called honor camps and they are minimum security and don't have walls and you and you live in dorm rooms that are locked overnight.

What does club fed have to do with the comment i posted?

If you leqalized or decriminalized most drugs - the prison population would drop instantly. But there are too many private forces that make hundreds of millions on prisons that eliminatiing crimes would cost them money - its bad enough people arent killing each other and committing crimes at the level they once did, so the powers that be just keep classifying more drugs as illegal so that more people can be arrested -

Why the hell is Rytalin an illegal drug? But if you are caught with it and it not in your name - you go to jail - :smh:

I would rather they actually try to rehabilitate them. Than to warehouse them and make many bigger criminal when they do come out. What sucks is prison for profit and nonviolent offenders filling up prisons.

I understand but how is rewarding them by allowing them to live better than some of the victims he victimizes supposed to be rehabilitating them... Imagine you were in a strip club and the ones that pay money for the lap dances get a weak dance how ever the ones that dont pay will get a full lap dance with all the perks, feels and even fucks..
Would that rehab you and make you want to start paying?
Do you give your dog a new dog bone everytime he pee on the floor and spank him when he don't?
If not, why do you believe that people, kids or animals behavior can be modified by rewarding them for doing things wrong..

The drug that makes people crazy over here is called selfishness and greed, and madison ave are the big pushers..
If you legalize drugs, gangs will be killing each other for turf, just like they did in the 80's and 90's and the joint will be run by giant cartels, like Mexico..
The problem is we have that me first greed that is encoded in us, that is designed to destroy any system that involves goods and money.
.

If you want to change the criminal, then you have to change the mind of the people or potential criminals.. But no one wants to do that, there is no money to be made off of smart consumers who are not addicted to materialism..
As far as jails doing it for the money, sure they do things to cut the coast of each criminal, but an average cost to house a inmate is around 60k a year, son in order for them to make a profit off of them they have to make more than that...
Now tell me what types of jobs they are doing in prison that produces more than 60k in revenue?
I tell you the real money is made off of make people "heads" (sneaker heads, pocketbook heads, car heads, fashion heads" ) and if their greed or love of this lifestyle gets out of controlled then, you have your criminal.
But no one wants to swallow that red pill and face the real truth!!!!

Norway is very homogenous. That's why their prisons are like this, less race/class warfare.

The reason must americans don't like it when somebody shows them stuff like this, is because they feel they are superior and better than everybody else.

Once reality sinks in and america the land of the free doesn't look that great its HATE TIME.:eek::puke::lol::lol:

Most Americans (especially white ones) have been brainwashed into thinking the US is the greatest country on earth. That might have been true 20-30 years ago but not anymore.

Being the richest country on earth does not mean shit if you are not investing in your people and infrastructure. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the US slowly declines.

the truth is somewhere in between. getting raped and spreading aids with no education or betterment programs just make it worse for everyone else when they get out. the number of repeat offenders in the us is nuts.

but anyone who slanged weed should at least live like this. I don't think they should be in there at all but its a way to keep the black numbers down and procreate. encouraging aids (no condoms) and spreading it when they get out

African countries rich in resources should pay attention to this model. Of course they risk being labeled terrorist states if they move to thoroughly. And then you have the religious/tribal conflicts to measure.

You are free ! Thats why tons of motivated foreigners ,some risking life & limb. Come here, & become successful. The only thing holding you back is you & what you truly want to do.

Stop putting salary caps on your dreams, and eliminate your fear of rejection. There is not one successful person alive that doesnt know the pain of rejection, based on a myriad of reasoning.

Dont let being Black be your reason. If you do, you are weak.

How about this idea, instead of investing in criminals and pay money to help them get their lives together, something they had all their lives to do while in school... Why not invest in the children and let them know you have up to the age of 18 to get your life together and after that you will not be treated like a baby..

Roadrage is such a loser. Your american exceptionalism is showing. Yes, Norway and the other Scandinavian countries seem to "cuddle" their inmates, but youre probably the type to causally mention that men get fucked in jail without their consent. Youl celebrate your archaic beliefs while eschewing others.

I hate the second amendment, but as long as I reside here, im going to be a huge supporter of it.

Look if some CAC were to kill my kid then laugh on tv saying 'Hey so what, I'm going to Disneyland" I would purposly get locked up look for duke then kill the fuck out his ass...
The problem with people like you, is that you identify criminals as black and you think that this shit would help them... You never once thought about a cop killing someone, then going there to chill....
People like you, actually have to step in shit then cry how stink it is... While cats like me weigh both the good and the bad, before talking..
