For the job I just got, I put in my application in the first week of May. I did my interview the first week of August. I got the offer October 20th.
Man, that was a grueling wait, but we’ll worth in the end.
I kept up with the stats for all the jobs I applied for. Mostly weather and data science related. I put in over 65 applications since march of 2021. Out of those 65 applications, I had 6 interviews. Two interviews went into 2 or 3 rounds with no offer. But peep this stat. All interviews except two were conducted by white men. The two jobs I accepted offers for (to teach at my local HBCU and the meteorology job), I was interviewed by Chinese men. I’m just saying. It’s hard not to see how race plays a role in shit. And to be fair, one of those Chinese guys was my previous graduate advisor. The other Chinese guy hired 3 students I mentored in graduate school, so he knew of me and my rapport. So it was really my network that got me hired, as well as my skills. But network was incredibly important.
I got out of teaching full time and now doing government contracts in atmospheric science for a well know energy company and an international aviation agency. All remote work.
I now teach at my local HBCU part time making $83 an hour while my new job is fully remote making $25k more than my previous full time teaching position. And by the way, my previous teaching position furloughed me April of 2020 to part time and never reinstated me to full time. And they were still taking full-time benefits out of my part time check. My last check with them before I left was $400.
