there was a story recently about an elected official who's going to live off food stamps for a month or so to get a better understanding on how people who live entirely off food stamps feel, and how it is to be in their shoes.

out here in socal most single people get around $200 in food stamp benefits each month, which works out to $50 per week for food. what would you buy at the grocery store to stretch that low amount to sustain yourself everyday for a week, eating three meals each day?

my guess would be oatmeal, on sale fish, chicken or beef. fruit on sale. vegetables on sale. top ramen. spaghetti. canned tuna. pre packaged salads. cereal. milk. maybe coffee to help cut down on your appetite and hunger pangs? man.....wow. any other guesses, bgol?

sheit how can working poor adults live off just $50 per week in food? cause three high quality cuts of steak at the grocery store will eat up nearly a third of your entire weekly budget.

Then don't get that.

as a single dude I can live off of 50 bux a week as long as I prepare all of my meals. and it won't be top ramen. and who NEEDS steak to live.

You can buy a rotisserie chicken at whole foods for 7 dollors (not on sale), all sorts of beans or peas ($1-3), canned fruit, dried fruit, fresh fruit ($1-6), rice ($1-4).

You can make all sorts of dishes with chicken. You can make chilli for under $10. You can also make spaghett for under $10.

The possibilities are endless. People just dont know how to shop.

This!
Having some basic staples, knowing where to shop, how to shop and knowing how to cook and you can get very creative with $50 but of course it's not easy.

you can't be serious with this qurstion...too east to live oof that for the week.

in addition to what other folks have said..I'd be hitting up Fresh And Easy's 'Today's Special' aisle go on the right day and you can come up off of $20 bucks

Ramen Noodles and get creative :D:yes:

But $50 can go a LONG WAY

Loaf of bread - $3
Sandwich meats - $5-$6
Peanut Butter - $3
Jelly - $3
Bag of rice - $5
Pack of chicken legs or thighs - $7 - $8
Canned or frozen veggies - $6 - $8
Pasta - $3
Bottles of pasta sauce - $4
Ground beef for pasta - $5
12 count eggs - $3
Ramen noodles :D

This that I have listed above is below $50, and all you have to do is get creative :D

for one person who cooks it can be done,,,,just depends on how well you shop and what you eat,,,,won't be a lot of expensive cuts of meat though,,,and some items will extend beyond each month,,,so you won't have to buy them every month,,,i would like to know how this experiment works out for the politician,,,so keep us updated, please

The politician was Corey Booker I think.

To top it off, he is also vegetarian.

$50/ week? hmm... using coupons, specials n cheap brands...

assuming u have basics like spices and h20...

cereal, milk, bag of apples/oranges/or bunch of bananas, bread, lean ground turkey/beef pasta, pasta sauce, sliced sandwich meat, mayo, chicken parts, lil bag brown rice, bag of black beans, bag of frozen or fresh veggies. if any $ left jget uice, pb & j, eggs...

cereal or smoothie in the am.

sandwiches n fruit to take to lunch

bigass pot of spaghetti last a few days for dinner w/veggies on the side

do something w/ the chicken, rice n blk beans for other days dinner w/ veggies on the side.

u wont be eating like a king but $50 def aint gonna have u starving and definitely won't have u eating top ramen either.

not gonna judge but i think the problem may comes when some try to buy quick&easy foods that are bad for u and cost too much like cookies, chips, frozen dinners, soda, frozen pizzas. 1-2 of those prolly throw that budget wayy off.

Cory Booker is the politician that decided to see what it was like to live on food stamps.

I do it every week for breakfast : Turkey Bacon, Egg Beaters, steel cut oatmeal, protein powder
for lunch & dinner meats: chicken breast, salmon, tuna, turkey, top sirloin thin slices
for lunch & dinner complex carbs: brown rice, red potatoes, sweet potatoes, whole wheat pasta
luch & dinner veggies: All frozen mixed veggies, broccli etc...
sweets: twizzlers, apples, oranges, red grapes (when on sale)
beverage:Jugs of water & diet tea (store brand)
..a big tip is to buy store brand products as much as possible..same quality (most of the time minus the name brand)...peace!

people with food allergies cant eat MOST of whats on that list, but its a good list if you dont have problems. cereal and milk and fruit is a good dinner, believe it or not. really, humans werent made to eat 3 meals a day, and the evening meal is suppose to be a lite meal. the chemicals they put in our food and our food habits make us get hungry and over eat.

The rich is getting richer, and you guys are mentally preparing yourself to get poorer.

y so serious?

there are more "what would u do with this huge amount of money" threads than "how would u stretch this small amount of money" threads.

who hates on a thread about frugal spending?
